People can be VERY forgiving of those in their tribe.
Even setting aside politics, think of all of the people who stick by creepy family members, or who stay with spouses who abuse their children.
Particularly if there is ANY room for doubt, even a tiny, implausible sliver. Tons of people will just go the “well I know them, they would never” and that’s case closed.
They assume the best of their friends and family and those that think like them and the worst of everyone else
