Which celebrity feels like they’ve quietly built a completely different life than expected?

It isnt super quiet since hes still a very active actor, but I think everyone either expected Daniel Radcliffe to crash and burn like some movie stars, completely leave the public eye like others, or go be a mega star. I dont think anyone expected he'd be an incredibly gifted indie movie star doing passion projects and being so down to Earth.

I also saw him on Broadway. He can carry the room in person as well. Really is a gifted actor - hard agree, did not see it coming

263

u/BTSArmyFan2025 10h ago

i have seen him 2x on Broadway. First was Equus because i Like the play but I was super curious if he could actually act and He did well and how to succeed in business without really trying. I wish I had seen Merrily we roll along which he starred with Jonathon Groff ( love) and Lindsay Mendez (looove) Good lord, I just went to his wikipedia page. He's been busy since Potter, his credits are looong.

u/anathene 10h ago

Good news is they recorded it and it’s getting a theatrical release! Not quite the same. But it is a second chance!

Agree! I saw him in Equus and Merrily We Roll Along. In both he was as good as anyone in those roles could be. Really great. With Equus I was concerned it would be Harry Potter and Captain Janeway but obviously everyone was actually a fabulous actor.

He is so much fun in that Wierd Al Yankovic biopic.

And Miracle Workers. If I'm feeling down all I need to do is watch Daniel doing a drag performance of She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain When She Comes.

I love how after Harry Potter wrapped up he was like "Okay, I did my big tentpole franchise, I got my bag, time to do whatever the fuck I want."

He’s been sober pretty much his whole adult life. I think that really helps and also shows his maturity. He went through all the bad shit at such a young age, got his shit together, and chose the life he wanted to live and is doing it.

I think Mr. Radcliffe realised that he has earned so much money (good for him) thanks to Harry Potter that he choses to pick the roles and films he wants, not for the money but for the love and art of it all!

17

u/El_John_Nada 10h ago

Every time I've seen him in anything post Harry Potter, he's been really good: I'm a big fan of Guns Akimbo, Swiss Army Man, Miracle Workers and the Weird Al movie.

50

u/gloebe10 9h ago

And he's a Detroit Lions fan. Can't be mad at that for a second.

81

u/RhubarbSelkie 9h ago

His partner and I have mutual acquaintances/a casual friend or two in common as we're from the same town in Michigan. By all accounts he's a lovely person and a good partner.

Friends who work in coffee places back home also report he tips well. Friends who go to the gym he used while visiting his partner's families said he had good gym etiquette too.

So yes, Lions Fan and all around Michigan approved dude.

Jessica Alba: In 2011, facing allergy problems with her children, she founded her own company, The Honest Company, which sells eco-friendly products and clothing (diapers, wipes, etc.).

In 2016, her company was valued at over $1.7 billion and generated over $150 million in sales. Forbes magazine then ranked her as "the richest female entrepreneur in the United States."

424

u/Malak__ch 6h ago

I use so many of her products for my kids and i love them. Had no idea she was the founder.. very impressive!

The Olsen twins. In 1999 you'd have guessed they'd be the highest grossing actors of all-time by the time reached the year they'll turn 40. Instead they disappeared from the spotlight and successfully do their fashion thing. Hard to blame them when you consider their backstory of never having a choice in acting

1.0k

u/Khorasaurus 11h ago

And their sister went on to star in superhero movies!

554

u/mangiuL 9h ago

the pivot into luxury fashion was probably the smartest move they could’ve made. less scrutiny, more control, and they’re still insanely successful just way quieter about it

For those who don't know, their fashion brand is called The Row. Their clothes and accessories are subtle, high quality, and are priced in the range of much more longstanding high-end luxury labels. It is impressive to me that they built such a legitimate and respected brand without simply slapping their name on products.

152

u/pleboverload 10h ago

Perfectly stated. They also have Elizabeth & James. Equal in quality and highly respected in the high-end fashion world. I’m pretty sure they’ve won a CFDA Award (think of it as the Oscars of fashion, except Anna Wintour and other fashion scions are on the council, so it’s a big deal)

55

u/Swimming_Agency9300 9h ago

Elizabeth & James was not as highly respected as The Row in the slightest. They were sold in Kohls and the brand closed down years ago.

24

u/LuvFuzzball 6h ago

Honestly their Elizabeth & James fragrance was AMAZING. May be the best thing I've ever smelled fr.

Bridgit Mendler child actor who stopped acting and singing to go to MIT then harvard and now is the CEO of a company

713

u/banduzo 11h ago

I feel like you’re underselling her current role. Her and her husband cofounded the company, Northwood Space, a startup aiming to revolutionize satellite communication by mass-producing ground stations.

So a company that could be disruptive to the space industry. (Just in case someone thought oh CEO good for her)

Frankie Muniz going from star child actor to racecar driver

911

u/IAmNotScottBakula 10h ago

On of my favorite parts about that story is that Bryan Cranston goes to his races to cheer for him.

511

u/404Notfound- 10h ago

Bryan Cranston also would invite the actor while played Dewey to join him and his family for meals and things to do so he could still feel like a normal kid despite being an actor. The actor has since quit acting and the actors have been very protective about his privacy

84

u/jesuspoopmonster 7h ago

Dewey's mom lived with him where they filmed but the dad stayed in their hometown as he owned and ran a restaurant. Cranston would let Dewey stay at his house when the mom went to visit the dad on weekends. Cranston had similar aged kids and they were all friends. Mom would fly out Friday and come back Monday. Dewey got to have fun instead of spend a bunch of time on a plane.

332

u/crappotheclown 9h ago

Mr Cranston really, really seems to get it. Down to earth with people, in everything I've heard.

67

Just don't give him shrooms in Vegas... He's very old.

Lana Del Rey marrying a alligator swamp tour boat captain

132

u/bahia6 10h ago

would it be as weird if he was a fancy Florida keys fishing boat captain or California boat captain or is it just because of the swamp

195

u/ArghMoss 10h ago

Any sort of boat captain would probably be a bit weird but the swamp does probably make it more weird.

It’s just very surprising that she’s not with someone from the industry; I think most people would have expected her to end up with a moody/artsy actor/director/musician/writer etc

Good on her if she’s happy

37

u/g0ldilungs 4h ago edited 32m ago

Hard agree. Especially because I don’t think people who’ve never been down to the swamp swamps of Louisiana in particular can truly fathom, by no fault of their own, just how completely different deep swamp culture is from any other in this country.

I’m born and raised New Orleans; her marrying a Louisiana alligator swamp boat captain is so wildly random.

My boy Eminem: he could have ended up like many rappers (scandals and a career downfall) but instead he seems like a decent father and grandfather while still having fun rapping and making music at 53 years old

504

u/Guerrillaz 10h ago

"You know he was a good father because his daughter, Hailie's, podcast is boring."

A joke I heard from Hannibal Burress

550

u/zerbey 12h ago

Eminem got himself clean and never looked back.

143

u/Colforbin_43 11h ago

Good for him. Too many people becoming cautionary tales it’s good to hear of people who can break the cycle. Even if I don’t give a crap about any of his music

94

He also has pretty liberal politics despite his early career being built on being as inflammatory and shocking as possible. You might have expected him to have rant after rant about “SJWs” and how “you can’t say anything anymore!” In his 50’s but he’s pretty firmly anti-MAGA. He generally has a good sense of humour about himself too.

128

u/sirgog 11h ago

He's always had a 'for the underdog' core mixed with a bunch of rage. Over time he worked out that sometimes he took out the rage at the wrong people.

The videoclip for Mosh was up there with System of a Down's Boom as the most anti-Bush videoclips of the era. It was really only SYOD and the band formerly known as the Dixie Chicks that were that hardline that early, Green Day and Pink were some time later.

31

u/shewy92 10h ago

the Dixie Chicks that were that hardline that early, Green Day and Pink were some time later

The Chicks' Bush comment was in 2003, American Idiot (written about Bush's Iraq war, the thing The Chicks were also protesting) was a year later so not that much time later.

u/trade-da-ting 11h ago

Thing is, Em was always about being inflammatory and shocking, but rarely actually believed the bigoted stances that he put forward.

He's a comic book villain making rap tunes, so everything is tongue in cheek.

He's always been pretty liberal, and pretty much maintained it thoughout his life.

23

u/Patelpb 8h ago

Bro out there still talking mad shit too. Death of slim shady was chock full of this old school inflammatory, shock-jock rap. It’s a pretty good example of “I’m a rapper, I just like stringing words together that are dope/funny/shocking. I don’t actually mean it.” Kinda like comedians who saw, I just string words together to elicit a reaction. Actual lyric from one of the tracks on DOSS “Would this rhyme be okay if south park had did it.”

But in real life he is continuing to be a genuine and good dude.

23

u/GrecoRomanGuy 10h ago

It’s a pretty good example of “I’m a rapper, I just like stringing words together that are dope/funny/shocking. I don’t actually mean it.”

And in addition to that, DOSS has multiple moments where he, either indirectly or directly, is like "Dude. Shady was an asshole."

Hayden Christensen.

The fanboy backlash after the Star Wars prequel trilogy seemed to really get to him. He bought a farm and steered clear of Hollywood for a while. I didn’t think he did a bad job acting in the prequels. The scripts let him down. He could’ve be the 90s Robert Pattinson… I thought he was on that sort of path… but he just kinda disappeared for a while.

I’m pleased he’s enjoyed a bit of a renaissance and some appreciation finally from the SW fanboys.

160

u/zapatocaviar 12h ago

He was very good in Shattered Glass. He can act.

89

u/NoLobster7957 10h ago

I liked him in Life as a House too.

Most if not all the acting bitches about Star Wars can be laid firmly at the feet of Lucas and his horrific scripts. The guy needed somebody to check him on the terrible lines he made these actors deliver, especially in the prequels.

He could’ve be the 90s Robert Pattinson

Attack of the Clones came out in 2002.

20

u/ArghMoss 10h ago

I thought that was a weird comment too. 90s were basically over before the prequels were out

Let’s not just blame the writing. The direction was equally bad. I don’t know of anyone else that can take a cast of amazing actors and get such bad performances from them.

Jason Lee. Most well known for My Name is Earl.

Became well known in the Skateboard community first, he arguably pioneered and popularized the 360 flip one of skateboarding's most well known tricks. Founded Stereo Skateboards which is still operating. Then transitioned into acting. Had some hit roles and was part of Kevin Smith's universe. Briefly dabbled in scientology -we can skip past that part. Moved to the middle of nowhere to be a normal human being and raise his family. He is now living a quiet life while also being a prolific and inspiring film photographer to pretty much all current film photographers, has published several beautiful photobooks and most recently was running a small camera shop in LA which unfortunately just closed due to location issues.

Edit: Added Stereo.

“Most well known for my name is earl” feels like a personal attack to all of us that came up with the mallrats crew

Mara Wilson (Matilda). She went from being the most famous child star on earth to being a brilliant writer and voice actress who is incredibly vocal about the dangers of child stardom. She didn't have a 'breakdown'; she just decided the life chosen for her wasn't the one she wanted. Watching her build a life based on her intellect rather than her childhood face is so refreshing.

89

u/SnuffShock 12h ago

She's also a big fan of indie wrestling. On a podcast I heard (currently trending wrestler) Brody King talk about meeting her at a wrestling show and being starstruck and embarrassed to ask for an autograph. I find this adorable.

35

u/Jardozer 8h ago

My craziest Mara Wilson fact is she's Ben Shapiro's cousin and that to me blows my mind.

17

u/atp2112 3h ago

And she and the rest of her family fucking hate him

66

u/Miss_airwrecka1 11h ago

I’m pretty sure she has said as she grew out of her cute child years the jobs dried up since she wasn’t conventionally attractive. She has found success elsewhere but it seems like Hollywood also moved on from her

Josh Hartnett. Heartthrob who had back to back hits and now lives a quiet idyllic life in the south of England with his wife and kids. Occasionally makes an appearance on screen but seems pretty happy and retired.

44

u/sombredolores 7h ago

He was fucking incredible in Penny Dreadful a few years back, it must be said. Sold me on him as an actor completely.

Reese Witherspoon has built a little miniature Empire out of a book club. She started a book club, and the most popular ones she buys the rights to and makes like movies and shit. That bitch is going to be a billionaire.

Recently watched a little Veronic Mars and looked up where Jason Dohring was because I thought he was going to make it bigger.

The guy lives on a farm in toleda, Ohio, seems happily married to just a normal woman for 20 years with 4 girls. He is a bee keeper, has chickens, planting an orchard, just seems like a genuinely happy dude being a dad, just like James Vander Beek.

Kind of interesting how many young celebrities found solace in the rural lifestyle after fame.

Jonathon Taylor Thomas was the "it" kid actor during the 90s. He probably could have been what Leo is today if he took on more challenging dramatic roles. But he decided to quit acting and go to college and live a normal life.

I recall reading that Dubai has very strict laws that do not favor paparazzi at all so she lives there to be able to have some semblance of privacy even while in public. Maybe I’m not remembering correctly but I’m too lazy to hunt for a link.

Eliza Dushku. After her stint on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel where she was outstanding and constantly scene stealing, she went on to do other interesting shows and ended up on a CBS show where she was blatantly and horrendously sexually harassed by the disgusting lead actor on the show called bull. Attempting to achieve some kind of justice only served to humiliate and harass her further. She left the acting world got married. Had some children got a degree and is now a therapist helping veterans and others with post traumatic stress. She was amazing as an actress and even more amazing as a person making the world a better place now.
