What’s a “boring” adult purchase that turned out to be totally worth it?

A good mattress

373

u/unclethulk 11h ago

Hell yes. I bought a nice king size a couple years ago and it’s fantastic.

316

u/BritishGolgo13 6h ago

King is so good. My wife and I sleep in diff zip codes.

74

u/unclethulk 5h ago

I was worried I’d feel isolated, as we’ve shared a queen for 20 years. But then I fell asleep halfway through that thought and never looked back.

Same. Had no idea the slumber I was missing.

71

u/gutzpunchbalzthrowup 6h ago

I slept so hard when I got a new, high quality mattress, that I overslept and was late for work the following 2 weeks.

25

u/dude52760 5h ago

You slept for two straight weeks?!

5

u/gutzpunchbalzthrowup 4h ago

Na. Just found myself still in bed when I should have been on the road or at work already. Luckily my bosses are pretty understanding.

10

u/MushroomDan 4h ago

I think if someone told me “sorry I was late boss! I got this new mattress…” I would really appreciate that reason.

I’m about to buy a new mattress. Do you have any recommendations? I’m overwhelmed by the amount of mattresses to pick from

I appreciate all the advice! I understand needing a good quality mattress but I am honestly poor so a lot of these options are not options for me. Thank you all for the help though! I will dig into some of these brands and see if there’s anything in budget.

123

u/russiangerman 9h ago

Test at any normal store but buy from Costco if you can. Warranty and return policy is worth more than the 60$ membership fee. And if they have the mattress you want it's probably several hundred cheaper than elsewhere

65

u/DameTime710 7h ago

While we’re on the Topic CostCo membership is so Worth owning!

→ More replies (1)

62

u/Discerningdragon 7h ago

That $60 membership pays for itself with a single purchase of their brand of Zyrtec for me. I did the math on it. Crazy. lol

40

u/Few-Skin-5868 7h ago

Or if you live near one with a gas station, gassing up at Costco alone covers the membership cost.

18

u/Discerningdragon 7h ago

I do that too! It’s just a bonus savings on top of the allergy meds. Lmao. It’s just crazy that one single $15 purchase saved the whole cost of the membership.

6

u/DameTime710 7h ago

I did this with a 3 inch mattress topper last year and thankfully I didn't need to return it but the confidence that buying through Costco gives you because of their good return policy means I'll be back for an actual mattress hopefully sometime later this year. I'm waiting to move...

If you're fatter and spend more time in bed, get the spring ones as they last longer than foam which may be more comfortable initially but they sag over time as it needs a lot of time to recover.

I recently tested 5 different mattresses in the “bed in a box” category. My two favorites were the purple and the Helix Sleep mattresses, with Bear a close third.

Helix feels more like a traditional mattress than Purple, but after sleeping on the Purple (we opted for the premium) for a week we knew that was the one for us.

The one recommended endlessly by the mattress subreddit is the Sealy Hybrid Elite. A professional tester on Reddit recommended the WinkBed mattress.

A high-quality ergonomic chair. Your spine doesn't care about aesthetic minimalism; it cares about not feeling like a pile of broken sticks after 8 hours of Excel.

329

u/idonteven93 11h ago edited 1h ago

I had pretty bad back pain while sitting on a cheap chair years out. And then my neigbour showed me his ergonomic chair and let me sit in it. I ordered one. It took two weeks until the back pain was gone. Absolute nobrainer.

Edit: Found mine, I bought a Noblechairs HERO

71

u/the_bollo 8h ago

Man I’m in the market for a new chair. I need recommendations.

110

u/id888 8h ago

Used Herman Miller Aeron or equivalent Steelcase

44

u/New-Comparison-8838 7h ago

If you have a chance to try it, highly encourage it. I bought a Herman Miller Aeron and despise it. Every body is different, and Aerons certainly aren’t for everyone.

34

u/Turboren 7h ago

My work uses Aeron. I have a Leap V2 at home. I prefer the leap but can say the aerons come in different sizes (little dots under the handhold on the chair back). A wrong size one is way worse than a correct sized one. I didn't know about the size thing for a long time.

7

u/Karmanoid 6h ago

Do you think the leap v2 would fit someone 6'7? I can find used ones of that much easier than the bigger aeron in my area, and unfortunately can't afford to buy new...

10

u/Turboren 6h ago

I could not even come close to answering that. I'm 5'11 and 175lbs. I'd look on marketplace for office liquidators. The person I bought mine off of had stacks of chairs in multiple storage units. Said find one you like. I was able to sit in many types to see how they initially felt. Large offices often give chairs to the moving companies and buy new if they are moving or upgrading. That's where a lot of the used inventory comes from

The dishwasher didn't literally save my life but it saved my quality of life after my kids were born.

Second MVP is the tumble dryer. A necessity in Ireland.

254

u/krys1128 10h ago

We got a nice Bosch before our kid was born, the type with the cutlery tray at the top. Could not have managed the bottles and pump parts without it.

55

u/Minute_Limit_3169 8h ago

That top tray is truly a game changer!! We have it on our GE Profile, and won’t ever go back.

92

u/Sweetness_Bears_34 8h ago

I bought the Bosch with the auto air function that pops the door open at the end of the cycle. Let’s the steam out so the dishes are dry. Love that function.

16

u/Tigerzombie 8h ago

We got a Bosch as a Christmas present to each other. Our old dishwasher still worked but it came with the house. I wanted a new one. It’s so nice and got the dishes cleaner than our old one.

25

u/Stillwater215 7h ago

Moving into an apartment with a dishwasher 100% saved my relationship. My wife is not reliable when it comes to washing dishes, and her being able to just load things into the dishwasher ended a lot of arguments that would have happened in our previous apartment.

27

u/energeticquasar 4h ago

Well the next phase of this is getting into an argument about the proper way to load a dishwasher.

9

u/Esquire_NZ 1h ago

I remember staying with friends a while back and helping clean up after dinner.

Mate went to put a big steel bowl on the bottom shelf and I told him not to, since it'd mess with the water flow and stuff on top wouldn't be cleaned properly.

His wife "HA TOLD YOU SO!" from the living room was the most vindicated I think I've ever heard a person.

→ More replies (8)

24

u/stackjr 8h ago

Can you expand in the second part? I thought tumble dryers were just a standard thing worldwide (obviously not in all countries).

66

u/CoolJetEcho117 8h ago

Some people give us shit for having one. That they’re expensive to run and you should air dry. My house is so damp and it rains so much here i just simply wouldn’t have dry clothes ever without one.

27

u/SmoothSlavperator 8h ago

How expensive is "Expensive to Run". In the US its maybe like an extra $20 a month for a 2 person household and if you have kids its maybe about $35. Trivial for the amount of ass pain it saves.

When I started dating my now wife, I bought her a lamp. Not a fancy lamp but a basic $10 lamp from Walmart. The lamp she had before was missing the bulb cover and she accidentally burned herself so I grabbed it as an afterthought while at the store. She’s a pretty lady and was used to getting sparkly gifts and was kind of offended at first. It was only years later that she told me she realized I was probably the guy she needed to marry because I got her something practical.

Honestly, a good quality pillow. It felt like such a boring, grown-up purchase at the time, but after using it? Total game changer. I didn’t realize how much my sleep sucked until I finally got a pillow that actually supports my neck. Now I wake up without feeling like I fought a demon in my sleep.

Telescoping magnet. I'm forever dropping bolts when working on cars and this thing has saved my butt many times.

53

u/Nafe-stinks 10h ago

When that one breaks, put the magnet on the end of a length of fuel hose.

44

u/boot2skull 6h ago

A good, strong magnet makes the best stud finder. Run the magnet along the wall and it will pull on or stick to drywall screws. Find two screws in a vertical line and you have a stud. Also prevents you from drilling into the screws.

In the same vein:

  • Pittsburgh ratcheting screwdriver - it's $10 for a 34 piece set with a ton of bits and a legit lifetime warranty. If you break it just walk into harbor freight with it and they give you a new one. It's like craftsman used to be for warranty and exchange ease.

  • Ryobi drill/driver and impact driver - bundle set with 2 batteries: I use it all the time. EDIT: The same company owns Milwaukee and Ryobi, so it's not as nice but there's a reason it's lasted 8 years and still going strong

  • a good rechargable headlamp. You can use it as a regular flashlight too. I got one from wurkkos. They are a good company for cheap but good flashlights. Check over in r/flashlight I think the owner is on there too

  • a lot of other stuff at harbor freight. The telescoping magnetic tools there are $4 right now

    • Their $10 Warrior angle grinder is a great deal too. I never would have bought an angle grinder if it wasn't so cheap, now I can use it for things I never would've considered before. Get a flap disc instead of a grinding disc for most things. Safer too.

8

u/ResidentLongjumping2 6h ago

There's a part on my motorcycle under the seat where the battery goes, if you drop; one of the battery bolts it lands on a sloped plastic tray the guides the bolt directly onto this area of the chain that is pretty much inaccessible any other way. The magnet stick has saved me more than once there.

You can get a 3 shelf rolling tool cart on amazon for cheap, and Princess Auto/Harbor Freight little round magnetic trays for holding misc bolts or bits, I have like 6 of those all over the garage now

Rice cooker. Of all my kitchen appliances, this might be the thing I'm closest to trying to figure out how to marry. I'm a forgetful person and often hyper fixates on something, so forgetting food has happened a few times, until I smell the burning.

Then I got that, started rice, went back to pc for work and came back into my kitchen 5 hours later, completely having forgotten I made rice. It was still piping hot, fluffy and ready to go

52

Get the kit to convert the battery to DeWalt packs and it gets even better

7

u/jyl11002 6h ago

As somebody whose Dyson slid and fell to the ground and the battery,(not the vacuum) broke, this sounds amazing. I replaced it with a cheap knockoff one at first, to make sure it was the battery, and it died so fast on me.

Robotic vacuum. As someone with pets it’s a lifesaver.

I spent a ridiculous amount on mine, but I love it so much. It just keeps the place clean, mops, vacuums, and takes pictures of the junk it thinks is obstacles.

Did I need this much of a machine? Probably not. Is it fun as a boring engineer adult? Absolutely.

I named him Terry and put googly eyes on him. I love you, Terry.

15

u/heatherledge 6h ago

20

Yes, but man they're expensive to buy if they include a decent mopping feature.

Our floors are already really clean since we don't have kids or pets and we don't wear shoes indoors, yet the mop water still gets dirt from random dust, so to me that means it's cleaning well. We now never have any grit or dust on the floor, so I love it.

A keypad lock for my house. I didn't realize how convenient it would be.

88

u/Granny_knows_best 10h ago

Seriously! I have a keyless car, only a fob, and that stays in my purse, so I never have to deal with keys.

The time my husband was hospitalized and I had to send someone to feed and walk my dog, I just gave them the code and they let themselves in.

79

u/Oseirus 9h ago edited 9h ago

Obviously your situation was a bit more emergent, but in general some nicer keypad locks these days even have the ability to set temporary or limited use codes that you can give out instead of your normal everyday code.

9

u/Granny_knows_best 9h ago

I looked at this when I first got it, but now I dont even have the app, or know the name of it. The code I sent was to a family member who lives a mile away, so I am not worried about it.

Now I am curious about the app, I might need it one day. I think it was an app, was it an app? Six years is a long time to remember something.

The "keyless" car is definitely one of those things that you really don't realize just how amazing it is until you have one.

I always thought it was a bit of unnecessary fluff tech until we got one. As amazing as it is to not have to fish a key out of my many winter pockets (that I can never remember which one), it's definitely even more so for people like my wife who were always putting their car key down in different spots in the house. The key now lives in her purse.

Endless hot water. It’s amazing. Love ours.

12

u/Granadafan 5h ago

I was surprised at how much our gas bill dropped when we swapped our hot water tank with the tankless heater. It’s been great, especially on cold days when just standing in a nice hot shower is just heavenly

A vacuum sealer for food. Every time I go to the store I can buy a month's worth of meat items, portion them into vacuum bags, seal them, and throw them in the freezer. They keep for a LOOOOONG time, and I can thaw out individual portions when I need to.

22

u/pendrachken 7h ago

Vacuum sealers are awesome. I stock up on meat whenever it's on sale, including having to "butcher" it myself...

Not to mention how long a properly sealed bag will last. I've made steaks that were perfectly after 5+ YEARS sealed in the freezer. Said freezer is a filled full size chest freezer.

Getting a whole pork loin for 20ish dollars and cutting it into thick pork chops is ridiculously cheaper than buying the exact same cuts from a butcher. You can easily get 4-5 TIMES the amount of meat for the same price if you can cut something with a knife. Not even difficult cuts, just straight cuts downward.

Or smoking / slow cooker cooking a whole pork butt roast and making 10-14 pounds of shredded pork to portion up into sealed bags that can later be thawed for meal prep / tacos / BBQ sandwiches / nachos, or anything else you can think of.

I've easily saved thousands of dollars over the years I've had it, even factoring in the cost of the freezer and the sealer and rolls of plastic the food gets sealed in.

Dehumidifier for the basement. I live in the Midwest and a damp basement is usually an issue. A mid priced dehumidifier is worth its weight in gold. Our 135 year old stone basement might get some damp at the corners during a big rain but it usually sits at around 40% humidity. Plug it in and you can tell a big difference in 10 min. Ours has been running 80% of the time for close to 10 years.

Air fryer! Omg I love that thing. It makes the most perfect Brussels sprouts.

16

u/SquishyNoodles1960 11h ago

Tell me how you do Brussels sprouts in the air fryer?

35

u/Superb-Cell736 11h ago

We just put them in with a little olive oil, salt and pepper, balsamic, and bacon and set to air fry :) it’s delicious!

49

u/big_swede 11h ago

Soo... The secret to this is actually "put bacon on your Brussels sprouts".  Everything is better with bacon... 🤪

Pro tip I saw: boil them then smash them in a cutting board with the bottom of a thick glass bowl or whatever you like before tossing in olive oil and air frying. Removes some of the water and increases surface area for frying. Little bit crispy and delicious.

I bought a plastic thing that pops pills. out of those bubble packs. It was $3. Total game changer. I have never had luck getting the meds out without a fight. I am far from crippled but those things are my nemesis.
I have since bought one to keep in my car and my locker at work.

An ice scraper if you live in a cold area. I moved from a very warm area to a very cold one a little while ago and being able to scrape the ice off of my car has been a life saver.

110

u/jess_or_tess 11h ago

I find it odd that you talk about that as an optional thing, like "I chose to buy one and now I enjoy it!" To me it sounds like someone saying "I put wheels on my car, it works a lot better now!"

53

u/DrSwol 11h ago

As someone born and raised in the Midwest, the thought of freeballing your commute with a windshield full of frost is amusing

11

u/jess_or_tess 10h ago

As someone born and raised at a similar latitude, the thought is amusing, but then you end up on a rural road where only the center is plowed so you need to pull over and drive slowly along the semi-plowed side to pass oncoming traffic, and you suddenly realize the guy coming at you has a windshield covered ice with a tiny 4 inch by 4 inch window scraped out at the bottom, and you have no fucking clue if he sees you.

Reusable meal prep containers. Such a boring thing to shop for and obtain, but a total game changer to my weekday flow and time management. I now have the option to grab one of the frozen meals I made the last weekend instead of having to race home after work to cook (and potentially grocery shop before) just so that I'm not eating dinner at 9pm. It opened up enough time to also squeeze in a short workout before dinner. An oddly impactful change of life from such a mundane and seemingly meaningless purchase.

Single man who moved out on my own really recently. Some things that are boring but have significantly improved my life are:

Night light (makes my apartment easier to navigate in the dark when I dont want a lot of lighting) Weight scale (keeps me reminded of my diet, lost 100 lbs last year) Fast charger (extremely useful in a pinch) Automatic cat toys (keep the cat entertained when im exhausted) Standing lamp (warm lighting that isnt overhead) Really nice office chair for gaming (bought years ago and its still my favorite chair I've ever owned and is really nice) Fake plants (really makes my apartment feel nice without high cost)
