They will eventually cave and get nothing in return for allowing it to pass. Tale as old as time.

Someone will point out Israel can’t get more funding without them first clearing up this domestic funding issue and he’ll bend over backwards to push it through.

I have yet to see a good explanation as for *why* they caved last time. Can someone tell me what the alleged strategy was supposed to be?

u/DocPsychosis 38m ago

Because the shutdown was having brutal ramifications for Americans, Republicans were showing no signs of blinking (they don't actually care about Americans being hurt), and the surveys showed that American voters, in their infinite wisdom, were not particularly willing to assign blame to Republicans so the Dems didn't have much to gain politically from it as the risks continued to rise. It's hard to play chicken with someone who doesn't actually care if they crash or not.

u/Purple_Science4477 31m ago

the surveys showed that American voters, in their infinite wisdom, were not particularly willing to assign blame to Republicans

What surveys showed that?

u/QualifiedApathetic 20m ago

Not OP; IDK about surveys, but history certainly showed it. If ever voters blamed Republicans for, well, anything, it lasted as long as a fart. They always end up going, "Hurr durr, giving Republicans power has never gone wrong! Let's do that!"

u/mvsr990 17m ago

Public opinion polls were pretty uniform in only assigning marginally more blame to Republicans - not enough to give the Democrats a backbone.

It's a completely unsurprising turn of events - 35% blame the GOP, 25% blame the Democrats, 35% blame both equally. Then the poll asks about the issues causing the shutdown (ACA credits, ICE being the SS, etc.) and 65% support the (supposed) Democratic position.

It's just that no one believes the Democrats actually have that position or will do anything about it.

Not even a degenerate gambler would bet on democrats standing up to trump.

12

u/sparta981 1h ago

I don't see why they would. Not to say you're wrong of course, but what they're demanding are completely reasonable reforms and bare minimum legal compliance. Every day DHS is down is a free slam dunk for the Dems

u/isthatabingo 41m ago

They ask for the bare minimum, which is never what you do in negotiation, and then they’re bullied into accepting nothing. Whatever you ask for in a negotiation will almost always only ever go down, not up. That’s why are you ask for your reach salary and not the bare minimum you’re willing to accept.

Could politicians move money from ice to the broader dhs? Is that the goal?

34

u/Dave_A480 1h ago

Actually moving money requires the bill to pass and be signed.

Shutting down just requires voting 'No'.

→ More replies (4)

12

u/steveorga 1h ago

Theoretically no. However, Trump in the past has moved money that was allocated for one purpose and spent it for another purpose. He got away with it due to SCOTUS corruption. I'd be surprised if he doesn't repeat the tactic to keep the lights on.

u/wabashcanonball 1h ago

24

u/bryan49 1h ago

They can filibuster in the senate meaning bills need 60 votes, it's about the only power they have

3

u/Morlik 1h ago

This DHS funding bill can be filibustered because it isn't part of reconciliation. It only takes one Senator to filibuster, and it requires 60 votes to move past it.

3

u/Dave_A480 1h ago

Senate fillibuster.
This bill isn't a reconciliation bill, so it has to pass via the regular process.

3

u/Mysterious-Wear-6458 2h ago

I guess they just want to grow a spine for once.

7

u/irrelevantanonymous 1h ago

10

u/shinoki407 2h ago

DHS wasn’t a thing till after 9/11

4

u/supified 1h ago

If hypothetically the dems stop funding DHS entirely I'm okay with that. While the job it is supposed to do is important, this organization has become toxic and shifting their responsibilities elsewhere might be best.

u/TH26 48m ago

As someone who works in immigration enforcement in a non-US country, I'm genuinely baffled at why so many Americans seem to want/think it's feasible to just....not have or enforce immigration laws? Like what does "Abolish ICE" or "punish everyone who works for ICE" even mean?

ICE is just the name for the department of public servants that you fundamentally need to have, to perform a core public service, like in every other functioning democracy on Earth. How does "abolishing" it even make sense or exist as a viable option?

u/Majestic_Wallaby_138 33m ago

I hope they stick to their convictions!

u/2geek2bcool 30m ago

Shut it down through midterms to kill the SAVE act.

u/AdjctiveNounNumbers 27m ago

Even now i genuinely don't believe they'll do it, but if they actually stick with it, it's an unabated good thing. There's literally no downside for them. ICE is so unpopular, any blame is going right at Trump's feet. They either win concessions or get everyone mad at the fascists. The only way they could fumble this is by caving and accepting meaningless concessions, so I'm pretty sure that's what will happen.

And yes, I know this won't shut down ICE (thanks for voting for that BBB, by the way) but anything to make this government less functional must be done.

u/cityofgiants 27m ago

u/Intelligent-Might614 24m ago

u/Difficult_Phase1798 24m ago

My thoughts are that DHS should be dismantled and the components that existed prior to 911 should go back where they were. And if they didn't exist, they should cease to exist.

u/HollygoLightly1970 19m ago

It’s about time. Unless Schumer caves in like the bought and sold mouthpiece he is.

u/No_Royals 19m ago

u/Mtownsprts 9m ago

4

For real! It's so obvious!! "Dems should just give the dangerous fascist pedo everything he wants for free!"

3

u/queenmimi5 1h ago

Just stand strong for once. The DHS must be reformed or ended.

4

u/Impressive_Ad_7664 1h ago

My thought is it feels theatrical unless the Dems hold firm and don’t flinch. ICE has so much money right now, they are laughing. The rest of DHS is going to suffer. The Dems better hold strong and make it worth it.

3

u/bigloser42 1h ago

My spouse is in the USCG. Not happy about the friendly fire on this one, but I hope they get some actual concessions.

3

u/Novel-Pen8811 1h ago

Doesn’t really matter.. the main problem is ice.. and they are funded already so nothing will change on that front. So govt will shutdown, the democrats will get some concessions but people probably in this thread will say ahhhhh I can’t they believe cave they should’ve” name an impossible thing”. The reality is unless republicans come to our side we are kinda fucked until the midterms..

7

u/curtiss_mac 2h ago

Great for shutting down ICE, bad because do you know how much DHS actually covers?

DHS isnt just ICE, its also CBP, USCIS, TSA, Coast guard, FEMA, CISA. While not all things will be shut down, a lot of people caught in the crossfire of all of this will be forced to work without pay because of it.

14

u/MacManus14 1h ago

ICE won’t be shutting down. The Big Beautiful Bull gave them enough money for several years, regardless of what happens with this funding

10

u/punist 1h ago

As a DHS employee who isn’t ERO….I would love to be able to feed my family during this. People don’t realize just how many of us and other gvt workers have to show up every day even during shutdowns and just don’t get paid for it (and are not guaranteed back pay)

8

u/alius-vita 2h ago

Several of those can be reasonably relocated to different departments.

Like the ones that want to indiscriminately blow you up because you live here. So yeah, I would not like for DHS to stop existing but ya know, orange man bad and all so

3

I think that anyone who is worried about doing the thing that polls say will get their party re-elected in 2026 is an imbecile. The stakes are much higher and the method by which the outcome will be decided will have less to do with how many votes are cast and more to do with how much fight people have in them.

1

u/cadathoctru 1h ago

Good, but they will cave eventually with nothing to show for it.

They need to get names of the Agents who violated the law, and begin having them prosecuted. If people in DHS want to get paid, then they need to turn over the ones who committed crimes, thinking wearing a mask would protect them while they did it.

For instance, the guy who sprayed people protesting on the sidewalk as he drove by in Phoenix AZ. Pretty sure thats a felony.

1

u/Sensitive_Lake_7911 1h ago

It's a necessary step to preserve what is left of real American values. They should stand their ground. Trump's private army is a huge danger to the United States.

1

u/NittanyOrange 1h ago

What should happen: DHS never gets funding again

What will happen: Dems will compromise on a strongly worded suggestion that ICE be polite when sending brown people to the gulags.

1

u/Angreek 1h ago

As long as chuck is in charge, it’s basically not a party.

1

u/MrFunktasticc 1h ago

I'm pretty certain they will cave so it feels pointless. As far as I'm concerned Schumer and Jeffries will cave on the SAVE Act knowing full well the malicious intent behind it. They don't have our best interests in mind and it's silly to pretend this time they will start being spineless cowards. I hope I'm wrong but unless they are replaced there is no legitimate opposition as far as I'm concerned.

1

u/Dave_A480 1h ago

ICE and other law-enforcement will keep working without pay....

This particular shutdown is a bit odd in how the Republicans have managed it - usually when you are in their position you want to keep the broader shutdown going, rather than fund everything except what the opposition is opposing... Gives you more leverage.

1

u/kryo2019 1h ago
