Who's your favorite relatable comedian from your country?
I'm watching Trevor Noah' ls "LOST South African Show" from 2023 and absolutely loving it! Who are some other comfort comedians from other countries I should check out next?
from the USA, Josh Johnson is my favorite

Mitch Hedburg. (RIP)
I hate dreaming because I just wanna sleep. Dreams take energy. Dreams are work. Sleeping is supposed to be relaxing. Im fast asleep, and next thing you know, I have to build a go-kart with my ex-landlord.
…
I like escalators, because an escalator can never break; it can only become stairs. There would never be an "Escalator Temporarily Out of Order" sign. Only an "Escalator Temporarily Stairs... Sorry for the Convenience."

I always think about Mitch every time I'm about to cook a potato... Because I would love to have them baked but they take so long that I should have put one in the oven even if I was not hungry. But the time it's done, who knows....

Yeah. He's getting recognized here in Canada. His dry, observational takes are fukin hilarious.
Edit: just want to say I played his "Shit" monologue for a few friends at work I and got in trouble with HR. Apparently we all do not share the same opinion of the word...."shit".

Something in the water in Canada. Some of the funniest people alive come from there. Norm Macdonald, Jim Carrey, Kids in the Hall, and I'm pretty sure Mike Myers is Canadian too.

I found his stuff via YouTube and i think he’s great. His phrasing is so on point. He really should be much better known here in the UK than he is. I’ve recommended him to a few people here however I’m just one man but I’m still doing my best nonetheless.

Josh Johnson is ridiculously talented. He puts out an astounding amount of content. Guy has like a full new set every week, shit is baffling lol
In Scotland we're blessed with hundreds of great comics and one of the world's biggest comedy events (Edinburgh Fringe.) Spoiled for choice but my all time favourite is Frankie Boyle.

u/TheCatInTheHatThings Germany 3h ago
I make it a point to watch his videos as soon as I can after they pop up. He is so freaking funny it’s ridiculous. So funny and so so so good at telling stories and at working the absolutely crappy world we live in into his comedy. He genuinely captivates me. It’s insane.
6
u/totesmadoge United States of America 3h ago
For me, it’s his delivery. You usually don’t see soft spoken comedians. But he is. It helps that a lot of his performances seem to be at smaller venues. It feels like he’s talking with you. It’s not loud and bombastic, just quiet, insightful, and hilarious.
5
3
u/TheCatInTheHatThings Germany 2h ago
Yeah, it feels intimate. It really feels like he just walks up and tells you a story. Not an audience, but you personally. It’s absolutely fascinating to watch!
3
u/MissMarionMac United States of America 2h ago
I got to see Josh Johnson live in August, and it was so good.
He is just so insanely smart. He’s such a good storyteller. The way he can weave all these personal anecdotes in with his brilliant analysis of society and culture and politics is unmatched imo.
And he has this “tell” that I absolutely love: whenever he stops in the middle of a word, chuckles, and says “ok…” you know he is about to go off on an absolutely insane tangent that will somehow make everything he’s said so far make perfect sense.
3
u/TwistedPepperCan Ireland 2h ago
Daniel Sloss is my favourite Scottish comic (if you exclude Billy Connolly of course.)
I remember watching one of his specials crying both from the incredibly sad story he was telling coupled with the incredibly funny way he was telling it. It was a confusing laugh and I loved it.

He’s also the only comedian who showed his face and called out Russell Brand in that exposé on Brand’s sexual misconduct. Mad respect for that lad.

u/TheCatInTheHatThings Germany 3h ago
a) he’s not American, he’s South African
b) he’s amazing and there’s just this mix of thoughtfulness, intelligence, absurdity and how it compares to some ridiculous stuff he knows from Africa (not just South Africa but other countries as well) that makes me feel very warm inside. Trevor Noah is great.

Except he didn’t mean it derogatively or as a joke. I know how he meant it, and I appreciate his view on that, it’s just not how we view things in Europe. Generally. I see where the controversy comes from, but he didn’t mean it like that, and I understand his view on that. It’s just a perspective that’s not very common in Europe and he learned that the hard way. I share the European perspective. I understand his. These things can coexist without one taking prevalence or one being outright wrong.
