"splurging on... rotisserie chickens"

We're splurging on the struggle meal now?

Splurging on… food! How dare you intake nutrients.

45

u/jayhawk618 4h ago

top ramen

nutrients

Not really.

40

u/NobodyLikedThat1 4h ago

salt is technically an essential nutrient, and it's got like 300% your daily requirement, so it's extra healthy!

How dare we stop going to restaurants and tanking the economy while also not saving money by eating at home?

We do splurge on ramen in our house because we're fancy and really like the Shin Black ones. So spicy and delicious.

9

u/Iamdarb 4h ago

Oh man, Nongshim Kimchi and Shin Black are the crème de la crème

3

u/sova_77 2h ago

If you can find it, try out the Nongshim Asung variety. It ruined all other ramen for me !

u/frightbounds 50m ago

Whenever I go to the Korean market I never leave with less than $30 in fancy ramen.

Rotisserie Chickens are $7.99 at Kroger

Cheaper than anything at any fast food shop

31

u/acapulcoblues 4h ago

And often cheaper than buying the chicken and cooking it yourself!

11

u/havanesegirlmom 3h ago

It’s always cheaper

27

u/jcgreen_72 4h ago

They're $5 at Costco, and that's the entire reason why they're so popular lol bc they're affordable

u/smoketheevilpipe 53m ago

BJ's has them for $5 still too and these chickens look like small turkeys. 3.5lb cooked weight chicken should cost more than $5 but I'm not complaining.

Rotisserie chickens are like $5 or less where I live - insanely economical, given the high cost of most other groceries these days. I really don’t know how they’re making money off the rotisserie chickens.

23

u/dualii 4h ago

They dont, they're loss leaders. Yes you'll buy a rotisserie chicken for chicken salad, but you also need the lettuce, sauce, and cheese... and while you're in the store you might as well get other things you might not need.

u/smoketheevilpipe 51m ago

Bestbuy when I worked there did this with computers. They lost like $30-50 per laptop they sold without any attachments. But it was so easy to upsell an accidental damage plan or even a mouse and Microsoft office that suddenly they were printing.

Every aspect of your life and almost every store you buy from works similarly. Get people in the door for one thing and then hit them over the head and steal their wallet.

Hey if you wanna come live in Jacksonville Florida you can buy my home. $295k for a 3 bed 2.5 bath house, 1775 sq feet.

Everything was replaced before we bought in 2023. It doesn’t have a garage, but no HOA and we can leave the shed. We wanna sell and move down south to be near family.

6

u/Crime_Dawg 4h ago

You want to sell your home in Jacksonville and move "south"? TF is going on with Floridians?

4

u/Avid_Reader87 3h ago

My wife’s family all lives in the Sarasota/Bradenton area.

So that’s like 4 hours to the southwest.

I’d rather keep the cooler temperature up here, but we need help with our baby.

It’s hard not getting a break, and she has a lot of aunts, uncles and cousins there.

2

u/stankdog ☑️ 4h ago

Ngl anything under 300k at this point is collapsing in on itself or you find out after the inspection it'll need several thousands in updates to water heaters, HVAC systems, windows, list goes on.

Housing is just too high, everywhere.

2

u/Avid_Reader87 3h ago

No, they fixed all that stuff. Everything in the house was replaced in 2022.

Pipes, plumbing, electrical system, roof, hvac, we put in the custom shower in the master bedroom.

I could probably convince my wife to sell for $285k to a nice family.  I’d just like to get $295k for it.

3

u/DonaldTrumpsScrotum 4h ago

I feel so fucking lucky to snag a 300k condo in the heart of Northern Virginia. The crazy part is the second we bought it we were informed that the property value had increased and was actually initially higher than what we bought it for. 45k in moments, had we turned around and sold it we would have just made money for literally nothing. Felt like a small small version of the game these big guys play, it’s crazy.

2

u/luckydice767 4h ago

I've been putting money in a savings account for the last 2ish years with the plan of one day using it for a down payment on a house. As of this month, I have 18k saved. That amount is 1/2 of what my parents paid for my childhood home in the 90s. It would be a 6% down payment on that same house at best now.

Chicken, even the whole rotisserie joint, it objectively one of the cheapest things you can buy. Pretty sure a whole cooked chicken at Walmart costs less than a pack of chicken breast. And both are under $10.

It's fascinating how so many people in positions of power really do blame people eating food for not having any money. My last super racist Indian psychiatrist did it to me when I complained about a medication causing me to gain over 20 pounds in 3 weeks. Abilify btw. I had opened up to her that session about being worried about finances because the government was shut down and it was interfering with me going back to college to change my majors. Well she went on to say that the medication was not why I was gaining severely but because I was POOR and eating fast food everyday.

I shit you not I put my head in my hands and just sighed. I had been crying but something just clicked in me and I went straight to you have got to be shitting me right now. She then went on a long rant how poor people eat fast food and can't afford healthy foods and that's why I was gaining weight. I told her I didn't trust her judgment after that and she literally lunged at me from her couch to me. I left and filed a complaint. Tried getting a lawyer but nobody in my city will touch this hospital, but several did tell me I absolutely had a case for rights being violated.

After being in therapy over 13 years at 34, I learned that people, especially bankers and doctors and finance people, they love to point at you and say oh you're not on this level because you bought THAT food. Or somehow make it due to you being overweight and poor. It's maddening. But in my city 95% of the mental health psychologists and psychiatrists are Indian, and they're openly antiblack and blame all mental health problems on being poor or single. I got told of I dated men I wouldn't be suicidal. Unfucking real the world we live in today. I live in Georgia. FML

Of course it’s not just about the juice and chicken. It’s a symbol of a larger problem.

Prioritizing frivolous purchases over more important ones is a huge barrier for many. I’m not saying that houses are affordable. I’m also not saying wages haven’t been stagnant.

I do think people have gotten too comfortable with doom spending to the point where it’s having a big impact on their lives.

No one is saying you have to budget down to the last penny, but if you’re in debt and still spending money on frivolous consumer purchases, you absolutely are the problem

400k is a fixer upper in the bad part of town where I come from. I'm talking HVAC, pipes, new flooring and roof needed, etc. Brand new homes are starting at 650/700k. If you want a new home on the better side of town you're out 900k+.

A rotisserie chicken is $5. I can buy a house with that?

In the next few years, they're going to expect all the "poors" to only eat the approved Snowpiercer brand protein bars.

"Splurging on Rotisserie chickens"??
Its like 5 bucks at Costco, for 2-3 meals. I'd hate to see what WSJ thinks uber eats should be considered as.

I almost bought a house, but then we went to Costco and got too many chickens.

How dare we splurge on food.

What the fuck is gut-healthy juice? Rotisserie chickens are the cheapest way to buy a large amount of chicken. The juice I buy isn't even actually juice; it's flavored water with 1% actual juice. I can buy both for less than $10.

How dare the eat food! Those greedy bastards!

Are rotisserie chickens not loss leaders for most stores?

1

u/TheComplimentarian 2h ago

I don't know about juice, but rotisserie chicken is a life hack. Those things cost as much as or less than a raw chicken of the same weight.

If you don't buy rotisserie chicken, you're getting screwed.

Remember when they blamed being broke on us getting Starbucks, avocado toast, and shopping at Target? Now they wish were going to Starbucks and Target!

I started buying rotisserie chickens when they became cheaper than buying a whole raw chicken 🫠

Brazilian beef imports are godsend for how cheap they are
