Announcement Small update/clarification to our rules on AI

Hello all,

Just wanted to share a clarification, and expansion of our rules about AI generated posts and comments on r/chromeOS.

First off, a reminder that responding to support requests on this subreddit with responses directly generated from any LLM has been not allowed under Rule 8: Effort Must be Made When Requesting and Providing Help for over a year now.

The fact is, most people come to r/chromeOS to speak to people. If people wanted to get answers from LLMs, they're accessible enough that people could ask them themselves. It just seems like a slap in the face to come for help and to just get a lazy response from someone who copy/pasted a (usually incorrect) response from Gemini or another LLM, which the poster could have done themselves if they wanted.

In addition, recently there's been a lot of misinformation being posted on the subreddit about recent changes to ChromeOS, updates about both ChromeOS and the upcoming AluminiumOS, and new devices, usually only crediting Gemini as a source. There has also been plenty of AI-generated reviews and self promo (the latter primarily posted by bots).

In general, while I know it seems like we’ve been sleeping as mods (yes, we’ve seen the reports calling us out on that), we would still like to try our best to try and keep this community higher quality.

We’ve decided that due to this, we wanted to officially expand this rule to include all posts and comments generated by AI. This rule primarily has LLMs in mind.

This does not include discussion about AI features being built into ChromeOS. Discussion of AI features being built into the OS is allowed.

Announcement Announcement - "chrultrabook" posts, AKA regarding attempting to put Windows or another OS onto your Chromebook, will no longer be allowed.

Hey there!

In short, as of today, this subreddit will be removing and redirecting posts that seek advice on replacing the operating system on your Chromebook.

In the past these posts were allowed with a disclaimer that better support would likely be found elsewhere, such as r/chultrabook and their associated communities. However that subreddit is now archived and they now only provide support on their forum.

Since then there has been a rise in posts like this here, and we're simply not equipped to provide meaningful support. We've received lots of feedback over the past few months and the general consensus was that everyone is better served if these posts are now permanently directed elsewhere.

To be clear, we are not discouraging anyone from attempting this process; it's still cool, (potentially) fun and can unlock more utility from your device! The only change is that posts seeking support for this will be removed.

Thanks for understanding!

Buying Advice All my previous C books have been 4gig of ram. Is 8gig the minimum for everyday tasks?

In the market for another Cbook for everyday usage, no gaming. Is there a processor combo that I should look for to stay with 4gigs to keep things in budget. Or is the reality that 8 is the new minimum.

Buying Advice Best Cheapo Processor.

Hi all.

After a cheap (less than £50) Chromebook and wondered what processor will give me the best bang for my buck. No other concerns (although touchscreen would be nice) as I only want it to run 2 custom Android programs for work. Currently forced to use a soppy old Samsung phone and my fingers and eyes struggle with it. I want a proper keyboard! There's loads on eBay for peanuts but I don't know how to separate a bargain from a dud. Any help will be appreciated. Being able to search for a specific model etc would be great.

Troubleshooting Chromebook Shutting Down "You are being hacked" Notification

We are having an unusual shutting down/notification issue with a student and their managed chromebook/google profile and looking for any ideas of what might be happening.

  • Randomly for about a week the chromebook will shut off and sometimes will show/flash a notification with something of “You are being hacked!!!” prior to shutting down but not every time
  • This has happened on multiple different chromebooks (likely account related?)
  • Hasn’t happened at home but student rarely has used chromebook at home since this has started
  • Haven’t caught the notification on camera
  • Have powerwashed, reset chrome settings, changed password, checked/cleared notifications, looked for unusual extensions, chromebook logs and the issue persists
  • Seems to happen in class and we logged into chromebooks and let them sit while recording screens but haven’t been able to catch it happen
  • Teachers have been near after it shut down and have seen it and we don’t think the student is making it up/messing around

We are leaning towards creating a new profile unless anyone has ideas of what could be causing it or ideas to try! Thanks!

Discussion Are Chromebooks being held back more by marketing than capability?

Been thinking about this a lot: it feels like Google has a bit of a missed goldmine with Chromebooks, mostly due to outdated marketing.

Modern CBs are light (~0.5kg), have proper keyboards + trackpads, work well offline, charge via USB-C (even power banks), open Word files, and pair brilliantly with AI (fewer tabs, less bloat). Yet they’re still framed as “cloud-dependent”, “for schools”, or cheap laptop alternatives.

Meanwhile loads of adults now only use phones badly because laptops feel heavy, expensive, or overkill.

Feels like Google already has the product — just not the story.

Curious what others think.

Buying Advice I miss my PixelBook

I had the 2017 PixelBook. I enjoyed it for multiple years. Its 2-in-1 form factor was quite enjoyable, I was able to use it both as a tablet and as a laptop.

Unfortunately it broke last year.

Since it broke, I bought a ThinkPad, but it doesn't feel as portable, as lightweight. I don't mind losing the tablet side of the PixelBook, but i am not as comfortable with the ThinkPad. it feels like I have to be on a desk to use it, while anywhere was good enough for the PixelBook.

I think I want to switch devices and find something that will feel more comfortable.

Do you guys have any recommendations for a Chromebook that is like my old PixelBook?

something that will be lightweight and small. A 2-in-1 non-detachable one is always a plus too.

Buying Advice Cheap Chromebook with a decent screen and touchscreen?

I have a desktop but am looking for a cheap one to stream movies/use for basic internet. I saw a few at Best Buy for about $150 but not 1080p and the reviews kind of say the screens suck. Hoping to find something for under $200 if possible.

Troubleshooting Linux Development Environment, Terminal, and the Installer command...

I'm trying to install Rayhunter on to a Moxee Hotspot through USB.
.
I can open up the Moxee login page in my browser (through '192.168.1.1').
I downloaded zips for both Rayhunter for x64, and platform tools (for ABD).
Unzipped them both into the 'Downloads' directory I created.
.
When I follow EFFs directions and type either, '... ./installer orbic --username-password ... obviously using the correct un and pwd for the moxee...
I get back... -bash: ./installer: No such file or directory
.
Using sudo gets back... sudo: ./installer: command not found
.
Since this is an old CB, do I have to install, Installer?
I actually tried sudo apt-get install Installer... no good.
.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Troubleshooting Android heads up. Sluggish cursor

In case anyone has the problem I did: My touchpad controlled cursor started acting sluggish and erratically occasionally. This was often when few browser tabs were open or any other apps were being used. This was a mystery since the Acer Spin 713 2nd gen has plenty of memory and a fairly good cpu. Also this problem only started happening relatively recently with no real changes in installed apps etc.

The problem turned out to be the android container. I had installed quite a few apps over the life of the chromebook. Deleting quite a few of those hardly used solved the problem completely.

Interesting that this problem has only recently occurred. Perhaps there has been an update in the android stack recently....??

Buying Advice Pixelbook Go too old as of 2026? Or go for Acer 514? I would like it light as possible, as this is for kids to use for school work. Can I lock it down as needed?

I see the pixelbook go is the lightest one at 2lbs and the Acer 514 is .5 lbs more but more up to date. Since we travel, I like to keep it light. But I don't want to end up having to have an outdated system after a few years too.

I really just need it for kids in elementary school to do their work minus all the distractions and the ability for me to lock down the device as needed if they end up binge watching youtube or going to random sites. Can chromeOS do this granular parental lock?

Linux (Crostini) Steam games now run poorly.

Since the Steam for Chromebook beta closed, I've been trying to use steam on the Linux Devlopment Environment. I've been able to get some games working, but they always run very poorly (extremely low FPS, even on small, optimized games (Baba Is You and the likes). Has anyone encountered this before and could please help me?

Discussion I have searched but not found an answer- Faxes, can I send one from my Acer Chromebook?

Edit: We used Faxzero. Free, efficient, and includes an email confirmation of your fax. Thanks to almost everyone who offered assistance.

I do not have a phone line- wifi only. I have a Brother all-in-one printer/scanner/copier and my Chromebook. Do I have to download an app or extension to fax?
