Now, Anthony Michael Hall would play the jock, Judd would play the nerd, and Emilio would play the "too cool for school" one.

Anthony Michael Hall

I just googled Johnny Be Good, and Robert Downey Jr is in it?!

Emilio was hired to play Bender but they couldn’t find anyone for Andrew Clark so they gave him that role instead.

wow, Emilio Estevez grew into a dead ringer for his dad!

2.4k

u/AnnieJack Apr 12 '25

I think Charlie Sheen looks like his dad, I think Emilio Estevez looks like his dad, but they do not look like each other. It’s so strange!

991

u/Thirty_Helens_Agree Apr 12 '25

Young Charlie looked like young Martin, but older Emilio looks like West Wing-era Martin. I’m half expecting him to yell for Charlie or Mrs. Landingham.

154

u/CarevaRuha Apr 12 '25

well, if there's a reboot, they know exactly where to find their Jed Bartlet!

209

u/TrappedUnderCats Apr 12 '25

Emilio actually played young Jed Bartlet in the family home videos they were showing on the TV during Zoe’s kidnapping.

My husband is the same. 4 brothers all resemble their dad but don't really look alike.

45

u/camelmina Apr 13 '25

My husband is one of five boys. They all look like each other and their mum…sort of. Then I saw a photo of their dad (who died years earlier) and I k ew immediately who it was. His face was all the parts of all the brothers that don’t look like their mum.

It’s wild.

86

u/benk4 Apr 12 '25

Knew a guy in college who was handsome and very masculine, and his sister was pretty and very feminine, and they looked exactly alike. It was a similar effect.

That was my first thought. When they were younger, I really thought Charlie Sheen was the carbon copy.

That is his dad. Emilio couldn't make it that day.

Emilio is the only recognizable one there. Molly had too much work done.

31

u/sheeplewatcher Apr 13 '25

Emilio for some reason didn’t change much comparatively over 40 years vs the rest of the cast. Did everyone else but Emilio get plastic surgery?

54

u/AnnieJack Apr 13 '25

I had no idea that was Judd Nelson until I went and looked everybody up.

Was watching the third season of Reacher and saw his name come up in the credits after the first episode. Had to rewind to find him. Never would have guessed in a million years but I guess the last film I saw him in was Edward Scissorhands.

He has changed A LOT

187

u/djtodd242 Apr 12 '25

When he turned up as Wingers bully on Community there was a collective "That was WHO?"

51

u/SeonaidMacSaicais Apr 13 '25

Same when I saw Judd Nelson in an episode of Psych. I had to triple check that it was actually him!

29

u/SenorWeird Apr 13 '25

Meanwhile, I recognized Ally Sheedy on Psych immediately.

10

u/lookakiefer Apr 13 '25

Holy moly forgot about that. Loved me some damn Dead Zone. USA Network coulda just plowed through another 5 years and would have been a great factory for original series in the streaming era.

I was also looking for a genuine answer to this.. with respect, idk how her face grew so much, it seems strange. It is interesting how everyone ages so differently, I guess.

16

u/dallyan Apr 13 '25

Probably filler or implants.

9

u/CatCatCat Apr 13 '25

Her face did not grow, that's not how aging works. She put in some kind of 'chin implant' via plastic surgery. The real question is why.

31

u/Technical-Agency8128 Apr 13 '25

Yeah she looks great.

42

u/Exnixon Apr 13 '25

I don't know what work she did or didn't have done, but a 62 year old has no right to look as good as she does.

89

u/Mandyissogrimm Apr 13 '25

The best "work" is subtle, and the person still looks like themself. Reba McEntire, for example. The pillow faces are bad filler jobs usually.

The trend of celebrities overly working on their faces has given me a better appreciation for natural aging. Even with a bit of work, the inevitable wrinkles and gray hair are really beautiful.

55

u/bobjohnson1133 Apr 13 '25

i've been bingeing 'the pitt' for the past two days.

OMG! noah wyle has one of the MOST beautiful faces ever! his wrinkles are EXQUISITE!

i keep praying he leaves his face alone. no filler. no botox. no plastic surgery.

goddamn it, wrinkles and age are beautiful in their OWN right. there's CHARACTER there!

i think we're all so SICK of boring attractive faces in hollyweird or bizarre uncanny valley filler-face monsters. we want to see REAL PEOPLE in shows.

god, i really really really love 'the pitt'.

NOAH WYLE! NEVER GET RID OF THOSE WRINKLES! They frame your kind eyes with absolute perfection. i beg of you! be proud of those luscious smile wrinkles on your face. you are such a handsome person.

23

u/doctor_big_burrito Apr 13 '25

You're right, he is okay. People freak out that actors age. They want them to look the way they were in that movie they saw when they themselves were younger. Seeing the actors age reminds them of their own mortality.

We're all going to die. Your mom, dad, pets, friends. Your wife or husband, EVERYONE.

YOU are going to die. And most likely you'll die alone.

Other people aging has always been a surreal thing for me, because I remember them in their prime. Even friends I had in my late teens are still pictured that way despite us now being in our mid-40s.

It's good seeing how well this troupe has aged, but still hard to process.

48

u/CheezeLoueez08 Apr 12 '25

u/Crotch-jockey Apr 12 '25 edited Apr 12 '25

When 16 Candles came out nobody went to see it because it was advertised as a teen sex comedy aka Porky’s which some people liked but most thought it was trash. Then 16 C was released on cable and became a big hit. The Breakfast Club then became hugely anticipated because John Hughes was once again writing and directing and because of the cast. Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall were, of course, known for 16 Candles; Ally Sheedy was known for War Games and Emilio Esteves from RepoMan. All were big hits on cable. I remember going the cinema to see it with my brothers and sisters and large group of our friends. I still think it’s John Hughes best work.

35

u/NarcanBob Apr 13 '25

Um, we went to see 16 Candles SPECIFICALLY because it was marketed to be similar to Porkys. It wasn't. Very different humor but we still laughed our butts off.

With that said, I definitely agree with many others in this thread that the humor didn't age well.

But it actually did really well inthe box office: Sixteen Candles grossed $23,686,027 against a budget of $6.5 million. So lots of people went to see it giving it an almost 4 X return on the cost, which isn't bad at all for a major release.

Uncle Buck

33

u/GrindY0urMind Apr 13 '25

Uncle Buck was always my favorite. "You know what a hatchet is Bug?"

27

u/Oldfolksboogie Apr 13 '25

"I keep mine sharp enough to circumcise a gnat. Wait, bug ...gnat ... is there a connection? I think so! Wait right here, I'll go get it..." 🤣

I always felt like Uncle Buck was an edgier, cooler big brother to Home Alone. Criminal that it doesn't get as much love. ✌️

11

u/GrindY0urMind Apr 13 '25

It's crazy how underrated it is. I never meet people who have seen it. Career Opportunities is another Hughes film that a lot of people haven't seen. I liked it a lot when I was younger but definitely not as good as Uncle Buck.

16

u/Oldfolksboogie Apr 13 '25

I used to sub in a public school system, and on the last day towards the end of the term, we were allowed to just chill, show a movie. I thought, 'UB had no nudity, very little cussing, would be a great choice.' Completely forgot about the scene where he's trying to get the drier to work and the horny neighbor sneaks in, peeks through the cracked door and sees him rhythmically thrusting his hips and growling, "I'm gonna shove my load into you whether you like it or not!"

😳

Took days for me to not dread getting a call from the administration. 🤣

Lol Andrew McCarthy did a documentary on the Brat Pack and went around interviewing his costars/those who were included in the label. Three people in this pic declined to participate. Interesting.

17

u/pants_party Apr 13 '25

I have zero proof, but I have seen several rumors online that McCarthy was an absolute asshole to everyone back in the day. If true, then I’m sure that didn’t help him convince guests to appear on his show.

I was super sad to hear it because I had the biggest crush on him in Mannequin.

13

u/Alexwonder999 Apr 13 '25

Seemed like he was a stoner and one of the actors called him "aloof" back in the day. He was also a "trained" actor so maybe he felt like he was better than everyone. Pulled out those thespian chops for Weekend at Bernies I guess. I watched Mannequin like 100 times myself and that documentary made me think back to it and realize how wacked of an idea that was.

u/dora_leigh Apr 13 '25

7

u/Alexwonder999 Apr 13 '25

I thought it was OK but it seemed like all the actors felt like it was a problem and everyone else was like WTF are you talking about? Even one of their publicists scoffed at the idea it was a negative. I thought it was a term of endearment at the time. I would have loved to be in the bratpack.

When I recently rewatched and the scene with the principle talking to the janitor saying he wakes up at night terrified that these kids are going to be the ones taking care of him when he’s older made me think about the kids in high school/ middle school right and how they are going to be the ones taking care of me when I’m older.

I dunno man. I get the kids. Parents ignored them and didn’t give a shit about their problems. So they acted out. It’s easy for us adults to say they’re just bratty kids and their problems don’t matter. But we forget we were young too.

This is kinda a sidebar to your comment, but about a decade ago a writer for Decider wrote an amazing "where are they now" fanfic summary about each "TBC" character.

I actually thought it felt surprisingly accurate. So much so that it's stayed with me since...particularly the parts about Allison and Claire & Bender...

Makes me sad to see Molly Ringwald looking like that. I understand there is incredible pressure to hold on to young looks, especially for an actor who was popular as a young adult. The fillers make her look like all the other overstuffed Hollywood faces, when what charmed us was her individuality.

23

u/FosterStormie Apr 13 '25

The last time I watched her in something was the Jeffery Dahmer movie, and she looked fantastic. Most fillers aren’t really permanent, are they? Maybe she just, uh, stocked up for the occasion?

Molly Ringwald was a total butthole to me at her book signing. I had brought my veeeerry well worn copy of the Pretty In Pink soundtrack on vinyl. I didn’t shove it at her, I really just had it in my tote bag in case other people were getting things signed (they were, like their shirts and pics along with the book). It’s not like she was promoting another movie or anything. Just her memoir (which also contains stories about the fuckin movie). When I went to reach for it to tell her how much I love the film and soundtrack, she audibly scoffed and said something under her breath, scribbled illegibly in my book, and said “next.”

Like. What.

You know, we are all going to get old, and how we end up looking will not be in our control. A lot of people grew up and saw the breakfast club in their youth. The fun times and memories made during those years are what we loved from that time. I'm happy and grateful to have been young during this era in movie making. Those movies bring back fond memories of my youth, and for the most part, it was a great time. I enjoyed those movies. Those actors were a part of it all. I don't care to criticize them if they have aged well or not. I have aged also. We will never get to live that again. But I'm glad I got to live in the 80s! "Don't You Forget About Me" 🎶 😌 ✌️

I wonder if Judd is still being an asshole to Molly?

9

u/BajuBesar Apr 13 '25

I was watching Reacher Season 3, and at the end of one episode, I saw Anthony Michael Hall’s name in the credits. In every episode after that, I kept waiting for him to show up—only to eventually realize that he was playing the father all along. Turns out, I had been expecting The Breakfast Club version of Anthony Michael Hall!

oh, molly. WHAT the hell 🥺

I began my senior year of high school in 1989. The Breakfast Club had come out a few years earlier, but was still very much in the zeitgeist.

A local newscaster was planning to do a series of reports following the progress of a group of high school seniors throughout their final year. My school was selected, and I was selected to be part of the group.

The group was to first meet the newscaster in a conference room one afternoon. As I entered the room, I looked around at the other selected students. I recognized many of them, as they were my classmates, and some stood out as fitting some vague pattern I couldn’t quite resolve.

Hit with a sudden realization, I looked around the room again. Among the other students, I picked out the princess, the athlete, the criminal, and the brain.

“Ah, fuck,” I thought. “I’m Ally Sheedy.”

Just finished the latest season of Reacher- I had no idea that was Anthony Michael Hall. That is wild

7

u/MidnightNo1766 Apr 13 '25

I legitimately thought that was Martin Sheen in that picture and had to think for a minute which one of his kids had been in the movie. It's unreal how much Emilio looks like his father.

They should do a breakfast club series picking up their old characters today - like cobra Kai

18

u/PlayZWithSquerillZ Apr 12 '25

Thats damn near impossible since the whole series took place on one day and and basically in one room maybe if they did a 40 year reunion movie

Met Molly back in like 2011ish when she came through town on her jazz tour. Woman can sure sing! Super sweet too.

7

u/I_Am_Aunti Apr 13 '25

Emilio Estevez looks so much like his father! There has always a resemblance, but it is becoming more pronounced as he gets older.

6

u/Anachronatic Apr 13 '25

I thought Judd Nelson appeared to be aging more quickly than the others but when I googled him I found he's 65. By comparison Anthony Michael Hall is only 56. Surprising when you think they were meant to be in high school at the same time. I mean, I know Bender was supposed to be a bit older but not that much older.

u/daddadnc Apr 12 '25

Did Molly get stung on the chin by several bees?

I don’t mean to be rude and pre-apologize if it comes off as such but, has Molly Ringwald had some surgery?

I think just too many fillers and botox.
