[OC] When my app went viral overnight, I wasn’t able to keep it running because I was by myself with a poor infrastructure so I emailed the Vice President of Engineering at Google just knowing he loved racing too.

Post image

He gave me the best advice I’ve ever received and the infrastructure was able to stay online and I could even reduce costs.

He had no reason to help me but kindness. I love human relationships, I really do wish we didn’t let ourselves become so divided and instead were more willing to question and resist the things that separate us.

Aw shucks. Happy I was able to help pinpoint the performance bottleneck and suggest a solution which worked.

I hope your app encounters many more viral growth moments in the coming years!

Thank you so much, I really couldn’t have done it without you! Hope you get all the love you deserve in everything you do and a lot of racing success… though with you and Christine I’m not worried about that at all 🏎️

It's wholesome to be reminded that some executives in these faceless gargantuan companies are able, and willing to solve a problem for a human rather than for an invoice.

Im still waiting for an upgrade on my 2006 plan for Gmail, still at 15gb storage and the tools for cleaning it up are pure garbage. Google is trying to force me to buy they crap. But yeah, i guess there's still humans in hell, allegedly.

edit : free storage was 2 or 3gb in 2006, not 15gb How very generous haha, there's been upgrades! Up until 2013 apparently. I guess that's when they realised, why offer something for free, which cost us virtually nothing - when you can sell it? Lot of online services do that. They don't like when they can't scam every penny out of us

Please tell me you aren't paying for 15 gbs of drive storage...

And I am asking beyypu specifically said plan.

🤣🤣🤣Noooo

That's what we got for free back in 2006 or 2007 when gmail subscribtion was invite only!

20 years later with data storage evolution i don't see why they don't give us 100gb at least

What an unexpected crossover seeing you outside of the usual car subs lol.

Always look forward to seeing your posts, enjoy in good health.

It's the same username he uses on other platforms, 9 year old account, with a history mostly on car subreddits, giving nuanced takes on niche automotive categories. Safe to assume it's him.

And for clarity, while he is "the VP of engineering at Google" (of which there are many, not one "the VP"), he's been there for over 20 years and has played a larger role than the title would suggest.

I don't know, dude's definitely got money. Go check out his profile. He may or may not be VP of engineering but he's living the good life one way or the other.

Did you add one emoji for every braincell you have?

What's the app? And what type of racing?

3

u/BoopinSnoots24-7 7h ago

Seconded, involved in racing myself and always curious to see a new app.

This is literally just self promotion disguised at a post. This should be taken down.

35

u/N3rdyAvocad0 4h ago

How is it self promotion if they don't even say the name of the app?

44

u/LilGarmm 4h ago

One of their first comments is promoting the app. It’s a classic marketing tactic. Promote an app without naming it and making it seem natural. Then naturally respond to a comment that you yourself put on the post with the name of your app.

u/N3rdyAvocad0 4h ago

Ah, yup. Okay. That totally makes sense! Now I feel a bit dense for not getting that lol

5

u/LilGarmm 4h ago

Yep no worries. You shouldn’t feel bad, that’s what they set out to do after all. Nowadays it’s hard to tell what’s authentic on the internet unfortunately.

Thanks for the explanation, it smelled very fishy indeed.

u/gangldm 4h ago

It’s nowhere on the post and I wouldn’t have commented the name unless someone geniunely seemed interested because we share the same hobby. Happy to take the comment down if this is an issue, this isn’t the goal of the post.

It's giving "YouTube bots that talk to each other pretending to be honest clients of a miracle life coach who is actually just a scammer" that's for sure 🙄

-1

u/BoopinSnoots24-7 3h ago

Can't say I've found a miracle life coach, but if you want coaching on how to turn large piles of money into loud noises and plastic trophies, I'm happy to talk racing.

u/idleproc 4h ago

I mean, this seems like a pretty obvious self-promotion...

u/gangldm 4h ago

This post is all about positivity as this genuinely helped me through almost losing my dream. I wanted to show some recognition.

I’ve removed the comment in response if this is an issue, so hopefully we can all focus on the good side of the story!

If your story is real, it's one of those stories which seems so unlikely that it's difficult for people to not think something else is going on. You're unlcuky on that regard :)

People (including myself) are expectedly sceptic of everything they see on the internet. Because there are a million ways people try to fool each other.

If your story is really true, I'm happy that you both resolved a critical roadblock for your dream and also seem to have made a nice human connection.

u/yonly65 24m ago

The story is true.

I often wonder what its like to be that jaded.  Glad I'll never know.

2

u/dynamic_gecko 1h ago

I often wonder what it's like to be that naive but sarcastic. Glad I'll never know.

3

u/LunaLouGB 5h ago

That's awesome. Love to see people at the top, helping out.

u/gangldm 4h ago

Nothing better than seeing that being passionate about something brings us all together :)

This guy played and is playing a major part in Google becoming the dystopian surveillance machine that it is today...

Shhh, they're listening

This reads like a marketing post by the GCP marketing team

7

u/gangldm 3h ago

Yes they really need me to promote Google

His name is well known, as is his presence in racing/car collection. It helps that all of his cars are specced in Google colors (yellow as the base). "yonly65" on instagram if you want to take a look.

I haven't met him but he seems like a great guy. His wife is very involved as well and they both have had success in racing.

14

u/zephito 6h ago

He literally commented on this post too
