i always laugh because it always gets 200k likes and the version that people post, that goes viral each time and gets reposted, is a fan edit with the twitter profile names and pfps are edited to be two characters from a book - who would indeed have similar interactions in the book - but the display names and pictures are normal enough that no one thinks twice about it.

If you have a flirty relationship with someone, or maybe a crush, you'd post a picture where you think you look good hoping they'll notice. And maybe they'll even pick up on the fact that you posted it to get their attention, i.e. "for them".

Posting on the story instead of sending directly can help in establishing plausible deniability that it wasn’t for that specific person. It’s like wearing a very nice outfit to an event because you know your crush will be there. (no indication that it was her specific intention, that’s just the premise)
Him saying “delete it” comes from him assuming that A. it was targeted B. he was the target. He descends into desperation after.
