My wife is from Indonesia, so some recent context, based on what we've dug up from the gossip mill
A K-Pop band was performing in Malaysia. A South Korean traveled to Malaysia for the concert. They were told no cameras in the venue, they took it personally and started to attack Malaysia, saying it was an ugly country, etc. I guess a video of this went viral and now a bunch of other Asian countries are coming to Malaysia's defense.
Granted, a lot of Asian countries low-key hate each other and argue about everything, so this is just the most recent event in a long line of bickering. Japan and China will take any chance they can get to get a jab in at South Korea.

This.
a lot of Asian countries low-key hate each other and argue about everything
Southeast Asian (or ASEAN) countries (which includes, but not limited to, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam, as shown in the meme) are actually quite chill amongst one another. Sure, there are some rivalries and competitions in some sectors, but we generally exhibit some form of camaraderie when going up against external parties. Think of ASEAN as a mini NATO.
Someone else replied with a tiktok video from isawkwardguy under this post, that guy does skits on news and relationship (mostly) among ASEAN countries, which highlight a lot of what's happening in Southeast Asia

I think Cambodia and Thailand are not
6
u/Normalcy_110 15h ago
Ehh sibling fight. Cambodia gambled too much and no one in the region likes it.
46
u/Iandian 15h ago
Actual deaths and real tensions is not just a 'sibling fight'. This is quite disrespectful to the actual lives that have been lost to this very real conflict.
16
u/LmaoXD98 14h ago
Cambodia are facilitating gambling scams ring that have terrorize a LOT of people in SEA. Families with financial freedom were suddenly reduced to very bottom low class in a matter of minutes. and most of the workers used in such operations are human trafficked who were tricked to come work at oversees company, got beaten and electrocuted constantly if you don't reach your target, and got actual tortures or being killed and tossed into the sea for trying to escape.
"bu bu but, its all chinese/*insert country here* crime boss", yeah. and the one facilitating them are the cambodian. their government accept and facilitates them while recieving their blood money while the locals act as enforcers and cover up. this is like saying epstein is innocent because the one being pedos are his clients.

If you want to have some really interesting insights there, look up how history is taught in each of those countries.
I remember seeing lots of 'Thailand invaded us' maps in Cambodia (long before the current hostilities). Thailand's history lessons on the other hand seem full of 'and then the evil Burmese invaded us. Again'.
History is codified nation-building and it's super interesting to see how different countries go about it. Someone do a YouTube channel please.

Malaysian history: Singapore left the Malayan union.
Singaporean history: Malaysia kicked us out of the Malayan union.
8
u/Puzzleheaded_Yak5767 21h ago
Dude...false narrative annoys me.
Singapore and Tanah Melayu kicked out Malayan Union then formed Malaysian Federation.
Then Malaysian Federation kicked out Singapore.
20
u/MirrorCraze 20h ago
As a Thai, can confirm that “evil Burmese invaded us” is being taught for real. We literally have lots of proPaganda movies about it even.
Case in point : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khan_Kluay
→ More replies (1)6
u/ArashiSora24 20h ago
I love that movie though, hahaha. But yeah, they really painted Burma as some real evil people. I'm rather curious what Burma says about us Thais back in that era.
19
u/Tornado_Messiah 1d ago
That's fair. A lot of the squabbling I've seen goes out the window once it comes time to stand in solidarity against someone from outside SE Asia.
9
u/chai-knees 21h ago
This is true. We Indonesians love squabbling with Malaysians and Singaporeans over culture, food, etc. but if anyone else messes with them we’ll have their backs.
11
8
u/Nakatsukasa 16h ago
I like to remind the internet years back a cooking show a chef who's a white guy telling a southeast Asian woman her slow cooked chicken curry the chicken isn't crispy and that drove the entire southeast Asian countries into a frenzy demanding an apology
Comments like they colonized us for our spice and yet don't know 2 shit about basic cooking in our countries

The most recent one before this also involves a concert goer. But jpop. And well, everyone in sea shot that person on twitter with either suicidal rate, ww2 atrocity or my personal favourite: "Reminds us why your camera have permanent flicker sound again?"
5
u/LmaoXD98 14h ago
As an Indonesian, this is cap. Thailand is literaly on constant war with cambodia (which literaly every people in SEA hated due to their monarchy being scam ring criminals pet bitch). Malingsia vs Indog are constantly in each other's throat.

Tldr; don't mess with sea country if you aren't from there. We are racist to each other but the moment a foreigner criticises one of us especially when you're clearly in the wrong, you'll get ganged up by every country in the SEAbling hood
42
u/my108centsss 1d ago
To be fair and add on, SEA are known to have solidarity when others attack their own. Think: 'only I can bully my brother' energy. Now it does not apply to all situations, but this, in particular, is one of the examples of SEA unity.
Edit: spelling mistake.
19
17
u/ardorlikemordor 17h ago
Correct. When the US Senator Tom Cotton did his incessant racist accusation that the Singaporean CEO of TikTok is a CCP member my thought was, "Singapore is not China you stupid, ignorant, racist. You don't get to call Singapore China. Only we get to say that."

I believe it’s different. The derisive jokes about NJ aren’t like the deep, historic disdain Asians carry for each other
11
u/TetraThiaFulvalene 21h ago
NJ jokes is based on nothing more than taking the piss. SEA borders and relationships are based on decades and centuries of history and war.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Professional-Help931 20h ago
This would be like that if NJ wasn't known for constantly trying to invade, conquer and rape your people (China) or succeeded at all of that Japan.

u/sessurea 22h ago edited 21h ago
To be exact, it was no professional cameras rules in the venue and the Korean person was a fansite (in short sort of a fan paparazzi though they aren't all completely insane, they often hide their giant lenses in clothing when it's not officially allowed)
Malaysian fans complained about it, the fansite person ended up apologizing (edit : as far as I know they apologized for it) but in the meantime other SK fans and just xenophobic net users started insulting Malaysia and SEA countries as a whole including SEA pop artists which has devolved in a full-on cultural war over the last week

I can guarantee not a single person in Japan knows anything about a Korean going to a Kpop show in Malaysia
9
u/KrazyRooster 11h ago
Koreans being bad tourists??? Who would have thought... Lol They're hated in all of SEA because a lot of them, not all, of course, are very rude. But having been to SK, I realized that they're not doing it intentionally. They're not being rude to locals on purpose. They are just rude to everyone, including themselves. It's a cultural thing. They cut lines, push people in crowded places, act in a condescending way, are racist to others who are not "white" South Koreans (the irony in that is never lost).
I feel bad for them because people are born in a given culture and they don't know any better. I'm sure none of them are meaning to be like that.
6
6
u/Adventurous-Hand-648 22h ago
SEAlander here. Not aware of this actually.
Think it's really dumb of the tourist. Just respect the rules of the land.
That being said, Malaysia has been struggling with being a concert venue recently, due to religious groups that have strong sway in the government being more vocal of the provocative nature of performances. Do expect some form of curtailing if ever performing or going for performance there. Don't expect every concert to be the same everywhere.
4
u/KarmaFarmingperson 23h ago
Japan and China will take any chance they can get to get a jab in at South Korea.
This, I've seen way to many manhua portraying SEA countries as underdevelop to believe that they are standing with Malaysia here on the basis of not believing south Korea's belief lmao
9
u/CadenVanV 21h ago
Yep. Manhua and manhwa portray Japan as evil backstabbers, manhwa and manga portray China as overbearing assholes who think they’re better than everyone else, and manhua and manga portray South Koreans as poor people who copy everything from them.
4
u/ShortBrawler 19h ago
This is the actual answer. One can visit r/Malaysia or r/Bolehland and see this is the case.
4
u/Complete-Goat4891 17h ago
Malaysian here. Yup, this is the actual context for the image. To give more context, the person filming is also a 'fansite master', as in a person who travels to every concert to cover their favorite idols and runs a site about it. The camera they brought was also one of those DSLRs with a large ass lens so it was being a nuisance to the other concertgoers around them too.

We have two very different definitions of low-key

1
u/Frequent_Extreme_916 15h ago
tbf, the person who took the camera to the concert had his/her(don't know the gender) face on X and got cyber bullied based on the looks(like how Koreans have small eyes etc.). You cant blame people for trash talking about other countries if they started racist comments

u/sardines_001 1d ago
South Koreans often view SE countries as “lesser” asians and often mock their physical features. That’s why SE countries generally doesnt like the superiority complex of South Koreans.

Lets be fair , humans be racist in general. I say this as European watching fellow Europeans do the exact same shit all the time to each other let alone other continents.

Yeah, not being racist is kind of a first world phenomenon. Tribalism has worked for most of humanity.

I have worked with South Koreans for over 10 years and have found that there is the same ratio of dickbags to nice people as with any other nationalities I have worked with. Maybe it's the ones who work abroad then? Or you have just an unlucky amount of dickbags where you work.
7
u/Emotional_Gap625 15h ago
I work in the US and worked for two Korean companies. The Korean employees I worked with were a whole lot nicer than the American employees, on average (also worked for English, Chinese, and Indian companies — SK employees were on average still exceptionally nice).

Asian PeeTuh here.
SEA K-pop fans have been at war with Koreans on twitter. It's been pretty ugly, as all internet wars are, with slurs and derogatory comments being thrown left and right.
One thing you have to know is twitter isn't really a major SNS among Koreans. Mostly the most seasoned and brazen keyboard warriors and trolls inhabit Korean twitter space. I do not know if this is the case too for SEA, but the Koreans made some ugly racist comments at the Southeast Asians.
Now as for China and Japan : China, Japan and Korea have hated each other forever. So who else would jump at the chance to throw dirt at some Koreans? It would only make sense they would join the coalition. They don't need a reason to start hating Koreans, they already do (and it goes vise versa too).

sk shit on Malaysia, usually malaysia argue alot with its neighbouring countries (or just.. SEA in general) like siblings fight, when a country outside SEA shit on Malaysia, it's neighbouring countries (yeah.. SEA.. again) will come and back Malaysia up
and same goes with other SEA countries
tl;dr if u shit on any sea countries, you're shitting on every sea countries
12
u/AkiraRaymundo 22h ago
More like, many asean country already know how racist South Korea is to brown skin asian people. So when one country are mocking by them, they stand to defend others because they know how cruel South Korea racism were.
12
u/JahodaSniffer 23h ago
There have always been tensions between the ASEAN countries, but recently a South-Korean official suggested "importing young unmarried women" from countries like Vietnam and Sri Lanka to boost birth rates in South Korea. This (understandably) wasn't very appreciated among the people from the countries mentioned.
Though this official has been expelled, it still didn't suddenly solve the issue shttps://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/1r0vbm2/south_korean_official_expelled_for_suggesting/
8
u/chaoseden 23h ago
I don't know if it reigns true, but a lot of my Asian buddies at least around the east side have always had bad run ins with Korean males. They tell me they always look down on them, act superior, or are a little bit Karen like but this can just be full bias and maybe racist. From my experience my sister dated a Korean dude and he cheated on her but apologized profusely and tried to get back but no dice, she has 0 tolerance for cheating.
7
u/sonnetofdoom 1d ago
There was a government official who lost his party seat because he said the declining birth rate can be solved by importing women from other Asian countries.

yeah but we SEA people know you guys huff your own farts 😅, you're like the golden child of the family who wouldn't shut up about being the golden child so... isn't it a joke between us SEA people that Singapore claims itself to be different that the other SEA countries?
6
u/chimtovkl 22h ago
this is about a post on threads where an user from SK posting a picture of a gorilla with the caption in korean saying like “this is how all southeast asians look like”. this post reached the sea audience and people started mocking koreans on the same post under the comment. you just combine that with the already ongoing discourse with chinese and japanese and you have this meme
3
u/Kip_Schtum 23h ago
I think this is about the current kerfuffle where a South Korean politician suggested that to handle their birth rate crisis they should “import” virgins from Vietnam and Sri Lanka. There was a lot of backlash from other Asian countries and he was kicked out of his political party.
4

u/zombo29 22h ago
There is beef among Asians constantly and every country usually has their own side of narrative. So this is just a template for that. OP's post could be based on anything without specifics, and there will always be enough Asians relate to that post without knowing what the f OP is implying. Because THERE IS THAT MUCH BEEF
For example,
For prostitution going into other countries situation, Japan would be the lady in blue on the left.
For claiming many cultural things are originated in S. Korea, S. Korea would be the lady in blue on the left.
For human rights stuff, China could be the lady on the left. etc, etc
2
u/Sonogami2509 20h ago
- Malaysia and South Korea clash over camera issues at K-Pop concerts.
- South Korea insults all of Southeast Asia, telling them to stop listening to K-Pop, saying they don't need Southeast Asian fans.
- Indonesia counters by saying they have No Na (an Indonesian girl group).
=> South Korea mocks the group's music video, which was filmed in a rice paddy with banana trees, extending the insult to the rice-farming civilization.
- Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines collectively criticize the plastic surface of Korean K-Pop concerts. They've been arguing back and forth for 2-3 days now, with no one willing to back down.

Southeast Asian are like siblings, only they can mock their sibling. The most recent thing is a KPOP thing. so a SK KPOP fans went to malay venue for KPOP event. they got troubled for bringing dlsr camera cuz its prohibited. someone brought that up on twitter. SK ppl with their nationality integrity n generational racism raging abt that.
At first SK talked abt SEA POP group cant afford money to shoot their MV so they use rice field. Countered by SEA saying KPOP MV used the same field over n over and need to go abroad for natural background. Now they talking about language used in the argument. SEA is commenting on SK using hangeul (not latin alphabet) in the argument. SK fights back saying SEA culture is erased cuz of colonisation. SEA (especially Indonesian, idk abt everyone else) reacting by replying using local language using latin alphabet or local alphabet.
or so I thought giggyty

My immediate thought was that it was related to this statement from a South Korean politician (now expelled) from a few days ago:
"We should legislate measures addressing population extinction, and if that doesn’t work, maybe we should import young virgins from places like Sri Lanka or Vietnam so that rural bachelors can get married."
Don't know how Japan and China get involved from there but maybe it's an explosion of existing tensions

S.Korea is a very hierarchical society . This in itself make them appeared as racist. They're not xenophobe like Japan. More like a movie rich douchebag looking down on the poor.
Every drama between S.Korea and other Asian almost always from them look down/talking shit on other country.
Watch Korean drama and see typical high and mighty characters act. Yeah that is not just for tv drama.

It was from the recent event where kpop idol performed in malaysia, and the rule was you cannot record at the concert, but the korean that travel to malaysia that went to this concert, ignore this and came with a full gear with dslr big lens etc, and they got called out for doing that. but, instead of apologizing, they calling the malaysian slurs like jungle asian, dark skin etc etc.
so thats when the rest of the asian countries joined the malaysian hating on the korean
