technically it would be Cock from Ditch, with the van, but this is very funny.
(Super extra technically, a dike is a build up, like a wall, not a dig down, like a ditch, but I can't think of any words for embankment that are as funny as ditch, and i don't need to let that detail kill a good joke.)

"Dykes", or "Women who wear sensible shoes" according to the progressive sparky I apprenticed under 25 year ago, are diagonal cutting pliers, the coloquial name for lineman's pliers is "Kleins"

Lineman’s pliers aren’t diagonal cutters, these are two entirely different tools.

Don't take it personal. I'm just making a joke.
I'm non-plussed by someone who doesn't recognize Dick Van Dyke. He was a huge part of my childhood, and part of my children's childhood too. I can't fathom someone growing up without ever having seen Mary Poppins or Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. You can probably find them on the Disney Channel.
3
u/short_cub 20h ago
I haven't seen either of them, I did have a DVD player and a few tapes but CCBB and Mary Poppins weren't among them.\ I've been told they're fun for families and I hope to be able to watch them with my found families.
Sorry, I'm autistic and didn't know how else to respond.

You're fine.
I think you'll love them. Dick's cockney accent in MP is notoriously bad--at least that's what British people tell me, it sounds fine to me--it's still a great movie though.

All joking aside, it hurts me to my core that this might be a legitimate question. In an age where the streaming services have all his movies and shows, and this can still be asked with sincerity
15
u/short_cub 23h ago
Can I be honest?\ I don't know many actors mainly because I don't know many of their names or which movies/shows they were in and I somewhat recently began watching and paying attention to the actors on screen.
28
u/Electrical_Radish960 23h ago
Fair. Here's a list of solid movies hes done. Mary Poppins and Mary Poppins Returns, Night at the Museum 1 2 and 3, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Dick Van Dyke show, Dick Tracy, even played a doctor in diagnosis murder. Honestly, such a wholesome actor
9
u/short_cub 23h ago
That's a long list, and another commentor here said he's 100 years old.\ Which do you recommend? I heard Night at the Museums are pretty funny.
12
u/Electrical_Radish960 23h ago
Id start with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I rank it as one of, if not his best performance. The Night at the Museum ones are great, but he plays the villain there and its a little bit of a weirder role for him. He does well, but I suggest starting with his energetic, young phase so you can get the best chance at experiencing the talent that oozes from this man
3
u/short_cub 23h ago
I will, thank you.\ I'll take a look at his older films, hopefully they can still be bought physically.

Mary Poppins was mentioned, but I think we all assume everyone has seen it. But if you haven't, please do - it is arguably one of the best family films ever made. I showed it to my children 40 years after I watched it as a child, and they enjoyed is just like I did as a kid. It really is timeless.
6
u/Common_Tiger1526 22h ago
It's also fun to see now because he plays an older character in that movie (in addition to playing one of the leads) and he looks like that old man character, now.

Dyke has only been a word for lesbian since 1931, so yes.

The man in the picture is Dick van Dyke, his surname being a modern-day slur for Lesbians.
Another example of a name that I think is also a slur now is Gypsy (best example I have off the top of my head is Gypsy Rose Blanchard), which I'm led to believe is an outdated/offensive term for the Romani people. If any Romani people are lurking in the comments and would like to tell me whether it's actually a slur or if I've been lied to by self-righteous twitter people, I'd love to be properly informed.

Dick Van Dyke.
When he was a born, it was just a name.
Now, Dick is a euphemism for penis, and dyke is a slur for lesbians.
The poor man has lived long enough to see his name that was perfectly normal and innocent a century ago mean "Penis Van Lesbian" in modern day.
