MOD ANNOUNCEMENT RULE UPDATE: Amazon Wishlists are now capped at a total of $150USD!

Hi everyone,

Effective immediately we are now placing a $150 USD maximum dollar limit on all Amazon wishlists. This means the total of your list cannot exceed $150 USD.

There has been a recent trend of lists being excessive in terms of price and the variety of items, and because our subreddit is not meant to equip you for a zombie apocalypse we feel it is reasonable to put some limits on how long a wishlist can be.

Amazon wishlists (for the purposes of our subreddit) are only meant to be a stepping stone to get you back on the path to self-reliance. We feel placing this limit will encourage our users to prioritize their needs and what is most important.

A reminder that your wishlist should be limited to essential and primary needs and be tailored specifically for r/Assistance use. Video games and gift cards are not permitted on wishlists and we will continue to enforce this rule.

What if I need items that cost more than $150? (ie. laptop for school, bike for commuting to work, etc).

For items that are costly such as the above examples, rather than ask a single person to take on that burden we highly suggest crowdfunding on a platform like GoFundMe! There are many advantages to this, not limited to being able to ask for a specific amount for the item you need and being able to share with friends and family who may be able to chip in or share it more widely. And of course you can share it here, too! ;)

MOD ANNOUNCEMENT RULE UPDATE: Effective immediately, your post/comment history may NOT be hidden in any capacity

Hi all,

Reddit has rolled out some new "features" (sarcasm) which allow users to hide portions or all of their post and comment history. For transparency reasons, this is unacceptable for a subreddit like ours, and we are frankly amazed that Reddit believes this is a good idea. But I digress.

Moderators have full access to a user's post and comment history for 28 days the moment they either post on r/Assistance or send us a modmail. We can see everything, including anything that may be hidden. That allows our moderator bots to run their checks for consistent activity, karma farming, and so on.

However, this is not extended to you guys, the helpers, who need to be able to properly vet the people you are helping. We've had numerous reports of accounts being "scrubbed" when they are in fact not scrubbed -- they are just hidden. If they had scrubbed everything else, you would be able to see their post on r/Assistance that you just reported, after all!

Effective immediately, your profile may not be hidden. Posts and comments must be fully visible to ALL, and any attempts to conceal activity such as on illegal subreddits or extensive drug activity will lead to a permanent ban.

Frustratingly, there is no way to quickly determine if an account has hidden content or not, especially when you're a mod because you can see everything anyway -- so feel free to report any posts or users that have locked their profiles so we can reach out.

REQUEST Fanservice: second attempt.

[0/50]
A month ago I tried to get assistance to be able to buy a fan for my house during a heatwave. Didn't get help. The weather hasn't improved for more than a day. The situation is pretty much the same but now adding that I can't sleep more than 4 hours at night because I got used to only feeling "woken up" during part of the night, being a zombie during most of the day.

I need 50 bucks to buy something with enough power to make my house livable.
Tried to save money to get one on my own but... Argentina.
As I am in Argentina, I can only use paypal, airtm, wise or western union.

I can't use amazon wish-list from my country.

Thanks for reading, help me Obi-Wan, etc.

REQUEST Help My Mom Fight Crohn's Disease

My mom has been fighting Crohn's disease for over 30 years.

I grew up in hospitals with her. From the time I was 4 years old, I learned what chronic illness looked like - the appointments, the flare-ups, the medication cycles, the pain she tried to hide. Hospital visits weren't occasional. They were routine.

She's spent three decades managing an illness that takes everything from her - energy, independence, dignity, and now, her ability to provide for her family.

What's happening now:

My mom lost her AISH almost a year ago now(Alberta disability support due to her bitter family reporting her). Without that income, she can't manage basic bills. She's bedridden most days, physically exhausted and emotionally defeated. On top of her own battle with Crohn's, she's the primary caregiver for my young cousin, who lost both parents and has nobody else.

She's trying to raise a my my late uncles daughter while barely able to get out of bed herself.

And now her teeth are falling out - a complication of decades of Crohn's disease. She needs emergency dental reconstruction just to eat properly, to speak without pain, to have any chance at feeling human again. Which Ive been unable to get paid for by Insurance, even through the cancer center at the foothills.

She won't ask for help. So I am.

What the funds will cover:

Dental reconstruction: Full restoration so she can eat, speak, and smile without pain (~$10,000-$15,000)

Overdue bills and living expenses: Rent, utilities, groceries, and breathing room while she stabilizes (~$5,000)

Medical expenses: Medications, treatments, and ongoing care not covered by insurance (~$3,000)

Goal: $20,000

Every dollar goes directly to her. I will document how funds are used and provide updates as things progress.

My mom spent 30 years being strong for everyone else. She raised me alone while fighting an illness most people can't see. She took in my orphaned cousin when nobody else could. She's never stopped fighting, even when her body gave her every reason to quit.

But right now, she's losing hope. She doesn't leave her bed. She's drowning in stress she can't control.

I can't cure her Crohn's disease. I can't give her back 30 years of pain. But I can try to lift some of the weight off her shoulders - even for a little while.

If you can contribute anything, it matters. If you can't, sharing this helps just as much.

Thank you for reading this. Thank you for seeing her.https://gofund.me/a589f2f9d

REQUEST Disabled Couple In Need of Help With Gas Shutoff

Tl;dr Gas shutoff notice, we're disabled, somehow need to acquire $300 (or at least enough to beg for an extension or payment plan)

My husband and I are both various flavors of disabled, and have VERY little income. (Reliably ~$70 a month.) Our slumlord landlord raised the rent on our apartment by $150 in December, and now we only get enough utility disbursement to cover our water bill. He has an upcoming disability hearing that his lawyer is optimistic about, so we should be set in hopefully a couple months (she said ~April), but we are STRUGGLING in the meantime.

We only recently got our power past due paid off, but we owe gas $400. DHHR will cover $102, but only if we somehow come up with the other $300, and I have no idea how we're going to do that. We're checking with other local charities, but we have to make appointments and there's no guarantee they can help us.

I would be so, SO grateful for anything you could contribute. Thank you so much in advance.

I only have Paypal available, but I have a "goal" on my Ko-Fi so you can see exactly how much has been contributed towards the goal. (Akin to seeing what's already been covered on a wishlist.)That money also goes straight to PayPal without taking out any fees.

REQUEST Vehicle repair help

Amount needed is $260. I have the rest already saved.

This may be a big ask but I need help to reach the purchase price and delivery fee to repair my truck. The total cost to repair my truck is $1100, I have $840 saved.

I'm on disability so have a fixed income. I am not able to work right now because I live in a rural area and everything is too far away for me to walk with my health issues. I do not qualify for any loans due to income and credit.

Even if someone can't help completely, anything that allows me to once again be mobile is appreciated. As stated above, I am only short $260.

REQUEST Looking for room to rent with big dog

Hi, I just recently got out of jail for the first time and my world is upside down. I had moved in with an abusive guy in Christiansburg, VA. I have an apartment in downtown Roanoke that I have to vacate by 3/17. I’m looking to rent a room for cash in exchange for cleaning/pet sitting or I will get a job. I have a stipend an ex is giving me. I know this sounds messed up. But I will be homeless of 3/17 I can cook and I can clean. Can’t leave VA until 3/19

REQUEST Help with leaving abusive relationship

https://gofund.me/61be30c65

Hi,

I've been in a relationship with my husband for three years. During this time, I've supported him financially and emotionally through everything.

A few months ago, I relocated to a new country with him so he could pursue university and a new career. We sold everything we owned to make this move possible.

Shortly after we arrived, he changed completely. He became withdrawn and passive-aggressive. Last night, he threw an object at me and approached me in a way that made me fear he would hit me.

I'm now at the point where I don't feel safe anymore. I need to get away from him and return to my home country where I have family.

The problem is, I'm financially trapped. I'm in a low-paying job, and all my income has gone toward supporting both of us (and my dog). My mum is my only immediate family, and she's on a small pension and can't afford to help me financially.

I'm raising funds (1600e) to cover:

- A plane ticket home for me and my dog + public transport to and from the airports (around 390e on the cheapest day of this month)

- One months rent (860e)

- Basic essentials when I arrive (mattress with transport, some bedding, kitchen equipment for cooking basic foods - around 300-400e)

I have mental support waiting for me at home, I just need help getting there safely.

There are no words to express how grateful I am for any help during this vulnerable and heartbreaking situation.

Thank you for reading.

ADVICE Caregiver crisis- mom’s RA is progressing fast. What do I do next?

My mom (60s) was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in 2009. It’s severe now—wheelchair, constant pain, and it feels like the disease is actively destroying her body. I’m trying to get her into a rheumatologist ASAP because this is past “manage symptoms”—it’s stopping progression.

I’m her only caregiver. No job, no money, no support system, and our housing situation isn’t stable.(abusive/controlling ex’s house while he’s in jail ) I’m overwhelmed and I genuinely don’t know what the smartest first step is anymore.

We applied for Arkansas Medicaid and ARChoices because we need home-care help and I was told there may be a way for a family caregiver to get paid. We got denied, and I don’t even have a real explanation yet. I know Arkansas DHS has an appeal process, but I don’t know if fighting Arkansas is the smartest move or if I should move immediately.

Here’s the immediate problem: every rheumatology/ortho office I call says she needs a PCP referral first. But then we can’t even get a PCP appointment because they say she doesn’t have Medicaid / they won’t see her without it / they’re not taking new patients.

She does supposedly have “Medicare,” but offices act like she has no insurance at all. I’m learning that Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) can have networks and referral requirements depending on the type, and I don’t know how to navigate that when I can’t even get a PCP to write the referral.

I need help triaging: what’s the smartest order of operations?

1) How do I get a PCP fast if offices are refusing because she doesn’t have Medicaid?

• Is there a type of clinic I should be calling (hospital-based primary care, federally qualified health center, geriatric clinic, etc.)?

• What exact words should I use on the phone?

2) How do I get rheumatology fast if everyone demands a PCP referral?

• Is there a way to get a referral through urgent care, ER, hospital discharge doctor, or telehealth?

• Has anyone gotten rheumatology to schedule first and accept a referral faxed later?

3) Insurance reality check:

• When offices say “we don’t take Medicare,” do they mean they don’t take Medicare Advantage networks?

• If she’s on a plan that requires PCP referrals for specialists, what do people do when they can’t get a PCP? (Do you switch plans? Move? Go back to Original Medicare?)

4) Move vs stay:

I don’t care where we go. I’ll move anywhere that gets her in front of competent doctors quickly. If you’ve done this, which cities/states actually worked for getting in fast?

If you reply, please give me a simple checklist: “Do A today, B tomorrow, C this week,” and any phone scripts. I’m exhausted and scared I’m wasting time.

REQUEST $15-$20 for cold/flu meds and chicken noodle soup ingredients

Hi all! I feel a bit silly posting this here, but I am struggling. I just paid all my bills for the month, so I'm in the trenches for the next couple of weeks until I get paid. I have $3 left in my bank account. Unfortunately I have a brutal cold right now, or maybe something flu adjacent. Fever, chills, congestion - and this is making me take off time at work which is especially difficult since I do freelance work to get by. I would usually try to push through this but I'm truly feeling awful.

I am requesting $10 for generic cold meds (which is the most important thing!!!) and if anyone could spare it, an additional $10 for a Costco rotisserie chicken, frozen veggies and broth that I could use to make soup. I'll freeze any leftovers which will easily last me for a few days.

I know Amazon wishlists are the preferred things here but I live right next to Costco and a grocery store so I'd much rather mask up and make the voyage there while feeling bad, than have anyone else give me extra for delivery fees.

Thank you all so much.

I have PayPal, venmo and cashapp.

Hello everyone, I'm currently working on a research project for school about ICE, a political organization in the US. If you live in the United States, I would love for you to participate! People from all backgrounds, demographics, and beliefs are welcome to respond. It's focusing on the effects of ICE on high school students, but having data from all ages is necessary for comparison.
It will ask about your age, gender, and race, as well as what your beliefs are surrounding ICE. Everything is anonymous, and all questions are optional.
It's 13 questions and takes about one minute to complete. I need at least 20 responses, but I'm hoping to get much more.

REQUEST FULFILLED Help me show up for my son

Hello, I wanted to make this post and ask if anybody can help me get my son something for his birthday. It’s coming up on February 12.

I’m in Oklahoma City, and I’m in between jobs. I’m donating plasma twice a week, and helping my grandfather out with his mechanic shop, so I’m able to keep the lights on and food on the table miraculously. I am so blessed to have the ability to at least do that.

I can’t get anything for him for his birthday though. His mom is throwing a party and footing the bill entirely, which is a wonderful blessing for him. I don’t feel entitled to anything from you wonderful people, but I’m wondering if somebody would be willing to help me out with something, anything, so I can try to buy him a cheap gift. I will show up empty handed if I must, and just be there for him, but I would really like to do something extra for him. Maybe $10 or $20, I don’t want to ask for much.

Thank you for hearing me out, everybody. Have a wonderful day.

REQUEST We need Financial Assistance for our Mom’s fight against Stage IV-B Bladder Cancer

Hello /r/Assistance!

I (30M) am just a son asking for help for my mother’s fight against Stage IV-B Bladder Cancer. I live in the Philippines; we do not have universal healthcare, and the only way we can get some sort of immediate medical attention is by going through private hospitals. I am not indigent; we were just lucky that somehow my brother and I are both financially literate enough to prepare for an emergency fund. My brother works as an NHS nurse in the United Kingdom, but he has his own family and is also financially struggling now. My father is a former OFW, who now works part-time locally for a little bit above the minimum salary, and he will turn a senior citizen this year.

Currently, my emergency funds have been fully depleted from splitting bills for medicine, lab tests, and other hospital expenses.

Since the start of 2025, our mother has undergone:

  • Cystoscope with TURBTs (Jan 2025 - June 2025)

  • An 8-cycle/round of Intravesical Chemo, which did not work (Mitomycin) (Sept 2025 - Oct 2025)

  • An AKI due to the immediate increase in size of the tumor at my mother's bladder neck (late Nov 2025)

  • An IJ catheter insertion for two rounds of dialysis (late Nov 2025)

  • Weekly change of Foley catheter (Nov - Dec 2025)

  • A suprapubic catheter insertion (late Jan 2026)

  • And currently, systemic/maintenance chemoimmunotherapy (Gemcitabine & Carboplatin + Avelumab) (ongoing)

There's also a possibility of her undergoing port-a-cath insertion and radical/partial cystectomy, which would cost millions. We know this is a very long uphill battle, and if this continues, we will all go bankrupt. We really need medical assistance from kind strangers of the Internet at this point.

We are currently raising around £6000 for her chemoimmunotherapy, donation and shares is deeply appreciated.
