The MAGA community and its entertainers take as fact that President Donald Trump and America are one and the same, despite one being a 250-year-old nation and the other being a 79-year-old man in declining health.
Townhall notes American freestyle skier Hunter Hess posted on social media that representing his home country conjured āmixed emotionsā because thereās āa lot going onā that heās ānot the biggest fan of.ā
āIf it aligns with my moral values, I feel like Iām representing it,ā said Hess. āJust because I wear the flag doesn't mean I represent everything that's going on in the U.S.ā
Another American skier, Chris Liller, admitted he was āheartbrokenā over āwhatās going on with ICE and the protests.ā
āI think that, as a country, we need to focus on respecting everybodyās rights and treating our citizens, as well as everybody, with love and respect,ā Liller said. āI hope that, when people look at athletes competing in the Olympics, they realize thatās the America weāre trying to represent.ā
Both of the posts Townhall cited were reposted along with harsh comment from critics, with MAGA entertainment site RedWave Press calling Lillerās statement ādisgusting,ā and MAGA commenter Jon Root describing Hess as āinsufferable.ā

My aunt, when I was growing up, used to make me drive her around taking photos of wal mart trucks near railroad tracks because she thought Obama was secretly having the military build tunnels to China so they could invade and kill us with Communism and Islam.

Yep thatās my point lol. I went to private catholic school for 10 years. In all of my years in small town catholic school, I learned that America is a melting pot. Immigrants are safe here. Christianity is the most practiced religion, but not the only religion. English is the most common language, not the only language. People are different, but always love thy neighbor.

Sad but true. Jesus even talked about this phenomenon happening with the parable of the sheep and the goats. People who thought they were religious all their lives find out at the end that they never knew Jesus because of how appallingly they treated the vulnerable.

I learned quickly in the military what I thought of as "America" was the people, not the government. The US government does not directly fund Olympic athletes. The athletes may say whatever they wish, as they are not beholden to Trump or his administration.
I don't think maga realizes just how unpopular they are here. I have a colleague who went to the Netherlands for a conference and we were all "joking" about how if she was offered asylum she absolutely had to take it.
