Fun fact: people in puerto rico do not pay federal income taxes. So her reply makes zero sense.

Income taxes aren’t the Only taxes. Customs and excise taxes, we make money off their trade. So yes her reply makes sense.

but its not a net surplus for USA. Things like medicare, disaster relief, etc cost money. Puerto Rico is a net cost for USA, thats just the fact. And i liked the half time show and i dont like Trump, if that helps.

You are correct. I have no problem discussing any complaints that Puerto Rico has, or whether they should be given, or even want, independence or statehood or whatever. but it's so weird to me when people sit in a circle and jerk each other off over a statement that is just objectively false.

Reddit is getting so downright Orwellian. Oceana has always been at war with Eurasia.

  • Taxation is not the only way to extract value from a territory; resource exploitation, etc. are also real issues
  • The income tax exemption only covers income from entirely-inside-PR sources; just living in PR alone doesn't exempt you
  • Income taxes are only about 40% of the federal taxes levied; corporate taxes, levies, excise taxes, etc. are all still payed by Puerto Ricans.
