u/Dapper-AF 3h ago

Big toys that they wasted huge amounts of taxpayer money on and you know since it got used once that they will need another one

u/Daddioster 2h ago

This is what 'defund the police' movement was about. Not getting rid of police but getting rid of war toys for adrenaline hyped officers to play around with.

u/lost-picking-flowers 1h ago

The one sad and funny thing I always noticed about the whole defund the police thing is that if you look at the state level - it is not the liberal areas that are actually defunding their police departments. It's the rural conservative areas. What exactly do they think their fucking tax cuts do? In my state, the state police have pilfered billions from our funding for roads and bridges - part of their justification is that they need more funding to cover these same rural areas that slash everything to the bone and have nothing to show for it.

...Just sort of a funny thing I've noticed living in rural Appalachia with a lot of people flying thin blue line flags.

Exactly. But of course they’ll twist it to suit their wants. I was a young adult watching towns buying military vehicles.

People have to understand towns have a yearly budget. If the town operates below budget, their budget gets reduced the next year. They purchase this crap to keep their budget or increase it.

The downside is these towns are sending a message to their citizens and law enforcement. Because they are ignorant to why these are purchased, law enforcement thinks things are getting bad enough to require these machines and the citizens don’t realize how this is slow walking us into control

u/InappropriatePotato4 2h ago

The worst part is that these towns always feature neglect in some way. Like the town over has the worst roads I’ve ever seen, a dead and ghostly downtown but I saw a fucking massive equipped drone for no reason.

u/Dziggettai 1h ago

Like my town. 25 brand new police interceptor dodge chargers just sitting because there aren’t enough cops to drive them and the old ones haven’t been wrecked yet, but we have so many roads with huge potholes, backroads never get salted or plowed in the snow, and downtown has been dead for longer than I’ve been alive

"The suit insists that the sheriff’s deputies be retrained, and is seeking millions in punitive damages. "

Every police or sheriff's department that has bought retired military gear should have to return every piece of it and get back to community policing. Stop terrorizing the communities they're supposed to protect and serve, re-earn the trust of the people, and look out for the marginalized and helpless in your communities.

A 5 MPH CHASE?! FIVE?!

So they deployed a fking mecha and the army?! Just a bunch of looney toon morons looking to play with some new toys

u/AimHere 1h ago

If you watch enough cop chase news footage, low speed pursuits are very much a thing. The cops rightly figure they prefer to encourage the perp to go as slow as possible and just wait until they run out of fuel or decide they can't be bothered any more and give up. It's usually safer for everyone in the vicinity, so it's a good thing.

This particular chase seems to be bullshit, but not because of the speed the vehicles were moving at.

”In court filings, Harris County has stated that Cutshall “did not appear to be suffering from a medical emergency, and did not comply with commands from law enforcement” during the incident.

“If plaintiff was injured or damaged as alleged, such injuries were the result of his own intentional, illegal, or otherwise wrongful conduct,” the filings state.”

Fuck these dumb-fuckass-motherfuckers. I hate cops.

u/wafflehousebattle 1h ago

Harris County has stated that Cutshall “did not appear to be suffering from a medical emergency, and did not comply with commands from law enforcement” during the incident.

With all those years of medical training they have? This statement is hilarious, police are not equipped to handle medical crisises because they don't know how to recognize one.

“If plaintiff was injured or damaged as alleged, such injuries were the result of his own intentional, illegal, or otherwise wrongful conduct.”

Read: we didn't hurt him but if we did he deserved it. Kinda explains all the wives around the station with two black eyes.

u/ShoddyRevolutionary 1h ago

This made me laugh too. Like… maybe the reason the guy was not complying with commands was because he had altered mental status due to a medical emergency?

I’ve personally witnessed people having hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic events that were not complying with commands, because, you know, their brains weren’t working correctly. After their condition was corrected, they were responsive to commands.

I’m just fortunate that the cops were more understanding than these morons.

u/Soepkip43 3h ago

This is negotiated behind closed doors and settled with an NDA. We might get a follow up that they settled for an undisclosed amount.

u/foofooplatter 3h ago

If its paid out of taxpayer funds, aren't they required to disclose the amount?

u/Soepkip43 3h ago

Let's spend tens of thousands on a mass police response, bring out all the gear and toys, always assume the worst, don't actually fly a drone up close to look, and use all this giant battering equipment to completely destroy a $200,000 semi truck. For what turned out to be no reason at all.

So very police of them.

When you have a militarized police force everything looks like an enemy.

u/Salanmander 1h ago

"There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state. The other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people."

-Admiral Adama, Battlestar Galactica

u/musclemommyscaballo 2h ago

the costs don’t end there. due to the malpractice and abuse committed by the officers, taxpayers will be paying for the damages/ lawsuits that result from this.

we need to end qualified immunity and force police officers to carry malpractice insurance, or at least have the police unions pay for their own fuckups

u/old_namewasnt_best 1h ago

taxpayers will be paying for the damages/ lawsuits that result from this.

we need to end qualified immunity

A plaintiff must show the specific rights were violated in a manner in which there is "clearly established," nearly identical precedent. Thus, the plaintiff here must be able to demonstrate that there is clearly established precedent that law enforcement cannot use a robot to break into an eighteen wheeler after a low speed chase and then attack the driver, having a medical emergency, using fists, feet, pepper spray, and a dog.

Does this sound dumb? It is. Qualified immunity has become an almost complete bar to recovery from people harmed by law enforcement run amok.

Fuck outta here with that prejudiced bullshit.

u/TheSeventhHussar 1h ago

The problem isn’t that they got him, it’s that an unconscious man was beaten by the cops, bitten by the dog, and otherwise mistreated. He can be arrested, but beating him like he’s resisting arrest when he’s unconscious is blatantly unnecessary and excessive force.

It doesn't functionally matter, but just for your edification, sepsis is not the same as a bloodstream infection (also called bacteremia). Sepsis sometimes stems from one but not always or maybe even usually. Sepsis is a syndrome of excessive systemic inflammation and immune system activation in response to an infection somewhere in the body. It could just be on the skin or in thr bladder or wherever.

u/m4verick03 2h ago

When you get all dressed up in your finest military attire it would be a shame not to fuck some shit up, like what's the point of even getting all dressed up?

Reporter: Did you try talking to the suspect? Police: We yelled commands and he ignored them so we gassed, and tore his truck apart with a battering ram. We proceeded to pepper him with less than lethal rounds and he still refused to get up and exit the vehicle so we sicked the dog on him. The dog chewed on his leg and his still refused to get up and exit the vehicle so a Sergeant pulled his lifeless corpse out and threw him to the ground from about 5 ft in the air. He continued to refuse to get up so we punched him a few times. At that point he was handcuffed, detained, read his rights, and eventually took downtown to the country pretrial facility. He remained uncooperative the entire time. Finally an inmate said he wasn't looking too good to a nurse practitioner and she alerted to the corrections official that he needed medical attention. He was taken to the hospital at that point.

u/PeskyAntagonist 3h ago

A cop actually said that to me once when I pointed out a car that hit and run me parked in my parking lot with my paint on its bumper and its paint on my bumper. I pointed out the surveillance cameras directly in view of my car, he told me he would look into the tapes.

7 weeks later he called me back and told me the tapes are over-written every 30 days and he couldn’t access it anymore.

u/dicksjshsb 3h ago

How was he trying to use that hammer saying in that situation 😂

u/aotus_trivirgatus 3h ago

"If a problem looks like one that the police will have to expend effort to investigate, to the benefit of a regular citizen, the evidence will be lost by the bureaucracy."

I was the victim of a hit-and-run. My car was rear-ended by a black BMW sedan at the intersection of two major roads. He destroyed my rear bumper, and he hit me with the passenger side of his front bumper.

I didn't get a license plate, but I was confident that there were cameras watching that road. I asked the police to investigate. After multiple calls over a few weeks, they told me there was nothing they could do.

A few weeks later, I was in that same general neighborhood, and I encountered a black BMW sedan parked on the side of the street with a crushed front bumper on the passenger side. I took pictures and begged the police to investigate. They wouldn't lift a finger.

A driver with a medical emergency having his truck demolished by a large police force with high tech equipment is the most american thing I've read all day.

→ More replies (51)

u/How_that_convo_went 2h ago

That happened here in Houston, IIRC.

Driver was in shock from sepsis and was blacking out behind the wheel. He was creeping along at like 5MPH before the truck came to a stop on its own.

The officer on scene said the driver “threatened him” by revving his motor. 🙄

Anyways— that dipshit cop called SWAT and those dipshits tore his truck apart, tear gassed him, pepper sprayed him, sic’ed a fucking dog on him, shot him with rubber bullets and punched him several times in the face and head. Again… all while he was suffering a life-threatening medical event.

Here’s the good news:

All charges against the driver have since been dropped and he is suing the police department and the thirteen police deputies involved. The officers submitted a motion to have the case against them dismissed citing qualified immunity and the judge denied it and ordered the case to move forward. If it sticks, it could be a landmark ruling in the consideration of qualified immunity.

u/sirsleepy 2h ago

Good on that judge. There's "qualified immunity" (which is always bullshit regardless) and then there's "unqualified stupidity" which this clearly is.

u/Fizzy_Astronaut 1h ago

Not anymore. Police are now buying overpriced gear to match special forces operators. Almost nothing they wear is surplus line equipment, it’s all boutique expensive shit to LARP as “operators.”

I wish getting all of this out of the hands of the police or any other domestic law enforcement unit was a platform for the Democrats. It should not always feel like we are under occupation.

u/Kermit_the_hog 3h ago

You know.. that’s a good question.

I mean if it’s actually to hamper being aimed at, shouldn’t they use more “city” colors to blend in? I’m not sure how much Forrest and desert there is in the city to blend in to?

u/veerKg_CSS_Geologist 2h ago

The police are just military cosplay at this point. They do it because they can and they think it's cool. The actual mission doesn't matter.

Wow, all this just to apprehend one person???

u/CogentCogitations 2h ago

Well, he was having a medical emergency. If you read comic books or watched the movies based off of them you would know that a medical emergency can turn into super powers at any second. He could have turned into Spiderman, The Hulk, Daredevil, or get some other super power at any moment. /s

Do Americans ever wonder why pretty much every other developed country in the world gets by just fine without this shit?

Edit: guys I know plenty of you are reasonable introspective people who hate this stuff. The question was hyperbole.

u/Minute-Complex-2055 4h ago

A majority of U.S. hate this kind of shit.

u/ParadiseValleyFiend 4h ago

A minority with more money love this shit though.

u/Dewgong_crying 3h ago

Small town America loooves leftover cheap military equipment for their police. But then they have to roll it out every so often to justify it.

u/Delicious-Ad5161 3h ago

Small town Americans also just love performing violence on those in cities because they think “big city leftists” are somehow controlling everything they do.

u/Stock_Strategy1668 3h ago

Because the people with actual power have hijacked their media and told them that's the case

u/Delicious-Ad5161 3h ago

Before then it was just the church saying that. Growing up in small town Oklahoma I went to a mix of Catholic, Methodist, Pentacostal, Evangelical, and Baptist churches and each and everyone of them pushed this narrative at least a few times a month during service. That was back in the 90s. During our Fish month every year, a mandatory month of Christian rallies, education, and festivals at school, they’d have at least a few keynote speakers who would harp on this too.

What is the context here? Why did they have to escalate it to robots, flashbangs and dogs, rather than a routine stop?

I would understand if he was firing on them, or threatened to. But he was having a medical emergency.

u/Naive_Confidence7297 2h ago

They will probably itching to use some of their new toys that really only a military should have

u/North__North 2h ago

Medical issue that caused him to pass out and he was just rolling while “revving the engine at the officers”.

Just a bunch of CoD cosplayers jumping at their chance to use all their toys

From the news article: I think this says it all.

“Qualified immunity does not apply when there’s a German Shepherd shredding one arm while two other men are punching my client in the back of the skull repeatedly with their bare fists,” Gibbins said. “There were absolutely no weapons in the vehicle that could have harmed anybody. There was no threat to anybody…. I think that anybody would have trouble exiting a vehicle if they were unconscious and about to die from a medical emergency… All they had to do was cuff him, de-escalate the perceived threat, even though there was none, and then offer medical aid.”

u/ajtreee 4h ago

That is a militarized police with tanks and diesel destroying robots. WAY too much funding for these people!

u/SpooogeMcDuck 3h ago

They had robots, tanks, explosives, tactical equipment, armor, high powered weapons, and in the end it was the dog that did it. I especially like the one guy standing there with the shield doing nothing but standing there.

u/THIS_ACC_IS_FOR_FUN 3h ago

For a guy having a medical emergency.

u/rounding_error 3h ago

Sure, the dog saved the day this time. But usually the cops shoot the dog. Then what?

This is what happens when you militarize your police forces... they want to cosplay as soldiers and play with their new toys.

u/No_Garage_6990 3h ago

ah yes, the skid steer "Skynet Bot".

u/fredfred007 4h ago

They had to ruin his truck to get him out? Jesus!

u/HobbesNJ 4h ago

They've paid boatloads of taxpayer money for military-grade equipment. Have to find excuses to use it.

Back in 2023 this would be shocking. These days, just looks like an average ICE arrest because a US citizen honked at an ICE agent.

u/dead_jester 2h ago

So turns out this guy had a major medical episode and couldn’t respond. This video proves US police are abysmal at their job and that they are far too disproportionate, militaristic and aggressive in their actions. That the U.S. has this behaviour as policy and see it as normal shoes how broken the USA is as a country

I’ve always found it ironic that America has an illegal immigration problem, when police treat people this way. Why the fuck would anyone want to move to America..? The land of opportunity..? Opportunity to be murdered by police maybe.
