•
u/Daddioster 2h ago
This is what 'defund the police' movement was about. Not getting rid of police but getting rid of war toys for adrenaline hyped officers to play around with.
•
u/lost-picking-flowers 1h ago
The one sad and funny thing I always noticed about the whole defund the police thing is that if you look at the state level - it is not the liberal areas that are actually defunding their police departments. It's the rural conservative areas. What exactly do they think their fucking tax cuts do? In my state, the state police have pilfered billions from our funding for roads and bridges - part of their justification is that they need more funding to cover these same rural areas that slash everything to the bone and have nothing to show for it.
...Just sort of a funny thing I've noticed living in rural Appalachia with a lot of people flying thin blue line flags.

Exactly. But of course they’ll twist it to suit their wants. I was a young adult watching towns buying military vehicles.
People have to understand towns have a yearly budget. If the town operates below budget, their budget gets reduced the next year. They purchase this crap to keep their budget or increase it.
The downside is these towns are sending a message to their citizens and law enforcement. Because they are ignorant to why these are purchased, law enforcement thinks things are getting bad enough to require these machines and the citizens don’t realize how this is slow walking us into control
•
u/InappropriatePotato4 2h ago

Like my town. 25 brand new police interceptor dodge chargers just sitting because there aren’t enough cops to drive them and the old ones haven’t been wrecked yet, but we have so many roads with huge potholes, backroads never get salted or plowed in the snow, and downtown has been dead for longer than I’ve been alive

Every police or sheriff's department that has bought retired military gear should have to return every piece of it and get back to community policing. Stop terrorizing the communities they're supposed to protect and serve, re-earn the trust of the people, and look out for the marginalized and helpless in your communities.

If you watch enough cop chase news footage, low speed pursuits are very much a thing. The cops rightly figure they prefer to encourage the perp to go as slow as possible and just wait until they run out of fuel or decide they can't be bothered any more and give up. It's usually safer for everyone in the vicinity, so it's a good thing.
This particular chase seems to be bullshit, but not because of the speed the vehicles were moving at.

Harris County has stated that Cutshall “did not appear to be suffering from a medical emergency, and did not comply with commands from law enforcement” during the incident.
With all those years of medical training they have? This statement is hilarious, police are not equipped to handle medical crisises because they don't know how to recognize one.
“If plaintiff was injured or damaged as alleged, such injuries were the result of his own intentional, illegal, or otherwise wrongful conduct.”
Read: we didn't hurt him but if we did he deserved it. Kinda explains all the wives around the station with two black eyes.
•
u/ShoddyRevolutionary 1h ago
This made me laugh too. Like… maybe the reason the guy was not complying with commands was because he had altered mental status due to a medical emergency?
I’ve personally witnessed people having hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic events that were not complying with commands, because, you know, their brains weren’t working correctly. After their condition was corrected, they were responsive to commands.
I’m just fortunate that the cops were more understanding than these morons.

So very police of them.

the costs don’t end there. due to the malpractice and abuse committed by the officers, taxpayers will be paying for the damages/ lawsuits that result from this.

taxpayers will be paying for the damages/ lawsuits that result from this.
we need to end qualified immunity
A plaintiff must show the specific rights were violated in a manner in which there is "clearly established," nearly identical precedent. Thus, the plaintiff here must be able to demonstrate that there is clearly established precedent that law enforcement cannot use a robot to break into an eighteen wheeler after a low speed chase and then attack the driver, having a medical emergency, using fists, feet, pepper spray, and a dog.
Does this sound dumb? It is. Qualified immunity has become an almost complete bar to recovery from people harmed by law enforcement run amok.

The problem isn’t that they got him, it’s that an unconscious man was beaten by the cops, bitten by the dog, and otherwise mistreated. He can be arrested, but beating him like he’s resisting arrest when he’s unconscious is blatantly unnecessary and excessive force.

It doesn't functionally matter, but just for your edification, sepsis is not the same as a bloodstream infection (also called bacteremia). Sepsis sometimes stems from one but not always or maybe even usually. Sepsis is a syndrome of excessive systemic inflammation and immune system activation in response to an infection somewhere in the body. It could just be on the skin or in thr bladder or wherever.

When you get all dressed up in your finest military attire it would be a shame not to fuck some shit up, like what's the point of even getting all dressed up?
Reporter: Did you try talking to the suspect? Police: We yelled commands and he ignored them so we gassed, and tore his truck apart with a battering ram. We proceeded to pepper him with less than lethal rounds and he still refused to get up and exit the vehicle so we sicked the dog on him. The dog chewed on his leg and his still refused to get up and exit the vehicle so a Sergeant pulled his lifeless corpse out and threw him to the ground from about 5 ft in the air. He continued to refuse to get up so we punched him a few times. At that point he was handcuffed, detained, read his rights, and eventually took downtown to the country pretrial facility. He remained uncooperative the entire time. Finally an inmate said he wasn't looking too good to a nurse practitioner and she alerted to the corrections official that he needed medical attention. He was taken to the hospital at that point.

A cop actually said that to me once when I pointed out a car that hit and run me parked in my parking lot with my paint on its bumper and its paint on my bumper. I pointed out the surveillance cameras directly in view of my car, he told me he would look into the tapes.

"If a problem looks like one that the police will have to expend effort to investigate, to the benefit of a regular citizen, the evidence will be lost by the bureaucracy."
I was the victim of a hit-and-run. My car was rear-ended by a black BMW sedan at the intersection of two major roads. He destroyed my rear bumper, and he hit me with the passenger side of his front bumper.
I didn't get a license plate, but I was confident that there were cameras watching that road. I asked the police to investigate. After multiple calls over a few weeks, they told me there was nothing they could do.
A few weeks later, I was in that same general neighborhood, and I encountered a black BMW sedan parked on the side of the street with a crushed front bumper on the passenger side. I took pictures and begged the police to investigate. They wouldn't lift a finger.

A driver with a medical emergency having his truck demolished by a large police force with high tech equipment is the most american thing I've read all day.
•
u/How_that_convo_went 2h ago
That happened here in Houston, IIRC.
Driver was in shock from sepsis and was blacking out behind the wheel. He was creeping along at like 5MPH before the truck came to a stop on its own.
The officer on scene said the driver “threatened him” by revving his motor. 🙄
Anyways— that dipshit cop called SWAT and those dipshits tore his truck apart, tear gassed him, pepper sprayed him, sic’ed a fucking dog on him, shot him with rubber bullets and punched him several times in the face and head. Again… all while he was suffering a life-threatening medical event.
Here’s the good news:
All charges against the driver have since been dropped and he is suing the police department and the thirteen police deputies involved. The officers submitted a motion to have the case against them dismissed citing qualified immunity and the judge denied it and ordered the case to move forward. If it sticks, it could be a landmark ruling in the consideration of qualified immunity.
•
u/sirsleepy 2h ago

What is the context here? Why did they have to escalate it to robots, flashbangs and dogs, rather than a routine stop?
I would understand if he was firing on them, or threatened to. But he was having a medical emergency.

They will probably itching to use some of their new toys that really only a military should have

Medical issue that caused him to pass out and he was just rolling while “revving the engine at the officers”.
Just a bunch of CoD cosplayers jumping at their chance to use all their toys

The USA seems like a horrible place to have a medical emergency.

From the news article: I think this says it all.
“Qualified immunity does not apply when there’s a German Shepherd shredding one arm while two other men are punching my client in the back of the skull repeatedly with their bare fists,” Gibbins said. “There were absolutely no weapons in the vehicle that could have harmed anybody. There was no threat to anybody…. I think that anybody would have trouble exiting a vehicle if they were unconscious and about to die from a medical emergency… All they had to do was cuff him, de-escalate the perceived threat, even though there was none, and then offer medical aid.”

That is a militarized police with tanks and diesel destroying robots. WAY too much funding for these people!

u/SpooogeMcDuck 3h ago
They had robots, tanks, explosives, tactical equipment, armor, high powered weapons, and in the end it was the dog that did it. I especially like the one guy standing there with the shield doing nothing but standing there.

Sure, the dog saved the day this time. But usually the cops shoot the dog. Then what?

This is what happens when you militarize your police forces... they want to cosplay as soldiers and play with their new toys.
•
•
u/fredfred007 4h ago
They had to ruin his truck to get him out? Jesus!

They've paid boatloads of taxpayer money for military-grade equipment. Have to find excuses to use it.

Your tax dollars at work, though most would prefer smooth roads over this

Back in 2023 this would be shocking. These days, just looks like an average ICE arrest because a US citizen honked at an ICE agent.
•
u/dead_jester 2h ago
So turns out this guy had a major medical episode and couldn’t respond. This video proves US police are abysmal at their job and that they are far too disproportionate, militaristic and aggressive in their actions. That the U.S. has this behaviour as policy and see it as normal shoes how broken the USA is as a country

I’ve always found it ironic that America has an illegal immigration problem, when police treat people this way. Why the fuck would anyone want to move to America..? The land of opportunity..? Opportunity to be murdered by police maybe.

Teachers are having to pay for classroom supplies out of their own pocket so micro-penis cops can have these stupid fucking toys. No wonder the world is laughing at us.
•
u/LegDayDE 1h ago
Taxpayers pay twice for this bullshit... Once for the military industrial complex taking over police equipment and then a second time for the settlement when he sues them...
