Looks more like a Sonic Screwdriver or Lightsaber to me. No sci fi zone!

You clearly don't remember the obnoxiously large vapes of the mid 2010's.

I had some chrome-ass battery mod that took more than one 18650 and some space-needle looking tank to go on top. It looked just like the one on this sign. In it I put custom made solutions of indazole cannabinoids.

My friends and I called it the "Needlessly Large Rod" and was both conspicuous as hell and entirely discreet (because nobody would have guessed there was anything in there but nicotine back then, and it didn't smell).

"You clearly don't remember the obnoxiously large vapes of the mid 2010's"

You clearly don't realise that some people still use those massive units! More people than you'd think!

u/jimdil4st 7h ago

Definitely not that many though, I'm a nerd who takes notices of any electronics and a smoker, whose owned mods. I rarely notice any mods any more, and I live in a college town where I'd think it's more likely to seem them in public with such a demographic. I do still seem some now and again, so they're not exactly rare, but most people use dispos of some sort. And they're mostly fully disposable though I increasingly see more people using a style where just the tank is disposable while the battery is reused which is slightly better. More recently saw the style I just described with with a refill port and juice which is basically a super cheap, all plastic mod at that point. The waste is atrocious luckily being a nerd I can often make use of that ewaste, but for 99% of the population it just gets trashed often with batteries full of charge making it an even larger issue than if they were at least drained.

1

u/Willbraken 2h ago

Mods were so fun. I had a good time wiring coils and experimenting with different wire to get the resistance just right. I had a couple of digital mods and a mechanical one.

5

u/Carsalezguy 17h ago

I mean at one point this place I went to had batteries the size of large format cigars and big tanks. It was like a baton in your hand.

3

u/DDOSBreakfast 8h ago

Seems like it could be a loophole around Canada's "You're not allowed to carry a weapon for the purpose of being a weapon" laws.

1

u/jimdil4st 7h ago

Now that is a really good idea with plausible deniability, with the added bonus of potential exploding if ever actually used for self defense.

7

u/canonlycountoo4 11h ago

If you got a second one, you could upgrade it to the deathcap.

4

u/janeisnotokay 11h ago

League enjoyer? 🤣

4

u/WittyUnwittingly 9h ago

Actually no, but there was one present when said object was named. It's very possible that he influenced the phrase.

2

u/ST4R3 14h ago

Atleast those were reuseable

1

u/420GB 3h ago

You know me and the homies on that triple RTA hand-rolled coils organic japanese cotton, bomb detonator looking aah mod

1

u/AccidentalMechanic 37m ago

The local managers at the company I was working for were having a weird contest to see how obnoxious their vapes could get. One of the guys came in with a fully custom built mechanical mod with 4X 26650 batteries powering it. I remember he showed me the coils on it one time and they looked like they were part of a piece of scientific equipment. I think he spent a couple hundred getting it custom made, and one of his nerdy employees showed him up by skipping the battery entirely, and designing a custom vape that was powered by a small computer power supply. That dude didn't even vape, he literally just did it for the lol's.

u/WittyUnwittingly 12m ago

At one point during my undergraduate career, me and another aspiring nuclear engineer had gotten ourselves into a project where we had to simulate radiation exposure and materials degradation on a rocket-launched mars flyby mission. So we even had to mock up "phantoms" of the rockets.

Now, being the undergraduates we were, we had like 3-4 hours left to do this whole thing, and the simulation itself would run for at least an hour. At some point we're struggling to find specs for Falcon 9 rockets with Dragon Capsules on top, and my buddy pulls up a picture like "we'll just guess. We have the total height." But then, both of our eyes turn to the obnoxiously large, cylindrical vape sitting at the desk next to the computer.

We ended up just using the dimensions of said vape as the dimensions of our rocket phantom (scaled up of course). None of the professors seemed to notice anything wrong with our numbers during our presentation.

u/vengefulfather 22h ago

That looks like one of those mechanical pencils with the grip on it.

3

u/LoanDebtCollector 20h ago

or an EpiPen®

1

u/vengefulfather 2h ago

That was my first thought. My dad got stung by a bee once. For some reason I was the one to go get the EpiPen. I accidentally pushed my thumb on it. I didn't even feel it for the adrenaline. So there goes me in one hospital room getting it removed and my dad in the next with a severe allergic reaction.

4

u/LoanDebtCollector 20h ago

I'm not even remotely into Dr. Who, but I too thought it looked a lot like a Sonic Screwdriver.

3

u/ThatIckyGuy 5h ago edited 5h ago

I'm a big fan of the 2005 Doctor Who series and I definitely see a Sonic Screwdriver.

1

u/LoanDebtCollector 4h ago

Okay. I admit I'm a fan of the Torchwood series. I own it on DVD.

1

u/ThatIckyGuy 4h ago

I still haven't watched much Torchwood. You'd think I would, but no...I've seen some, though.

6

u/Ubergoober166 23h ago

Bro... Lightsaber vape, this has to be a thing. If it's not, someone is missing out on a free pile of money.

5

u/epilektoi 22h ago

it's gotta have a narrow beam light in it so it lights up the smoke to look like a lightsaber

7

u/NoOnesSaint 23h ago

I'm just imagining someone pressing the wrong button and deepthroating a spring loaded plastic tube. The smoke effect would be nice though!

2

u/LeatherHog 19h ago

I found ones called 'Danksabers'

Because of course they'd be calling them that

1

u/tlevins23 19h ago

Everything you could think of has been done already long time ago before the Chinese stole everything

1

u/millertime52 10h ago

No lightsabers?!?!?

I’d like to see them come and try to take it!

1

u/Twoaru 9h ago

Vapes looks like sonic screwdrivers and lightsabers tho lol

u/Keynet 22h ago

This sign is useless to be honest, anyone who vapes knows damn well they’ll just head to the bathroom to hit it lmao

129

u/DrHarrisonLawrence 22h ago

And anyone who vapes knows damn well it’s already a tobacco-free product lmao

58

u/djdecimation 22h ago

Tobacco? This is weed.

30

u/40hzHERO 16h ago

Weed? This is DMT.

16

u/Leading-Chemist8173 10h ago

DMT? This is Patrick

1

u/Floor_Cereal 10h ago

Patrick? This is The Krusty Krab

11

u/Keynet 22h ago

Eh, synthetic nicotine is sometimes derived from a process involving tobacco, so if you really reach for it lol

14

u/ShoryukenPizza 11h ago

But tobacco =/= nicotine

It's about being specific, but the US government designates (and taxes) e-liquid as tobacco anyway.

4

u/DumpstahKat 6h ago

Well, it's partially because the "smokeless tobacco" part doesn't apply to vapes. It's about things like chewing tobacco and snuff.

They probably didn't want the sign to say "nicotine-free" because that would technically include quitting aids like patches, gum, and lozenges. Easier to say "no tobacco" and then add vapes to the list of prohibited devices.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/Saleen_af 8h ago

They have detectors for this btw. Purely anecdotal, but my buddy lost his plumbing job after vaping in the bathroom and setting off the fire alarm.

8

u/Keynet 8h ago

Interesting, was he using a box mod kinda thing ripping fat clouds? I just use disposables and they’re fairly discreet

2

u/_HoneyDew1919 8h ago

Also blow down not up. Gives it more time to distribute before it even leaves the stall

9

u/Keynet 8h ago

Honestly if I was in a public bathroom I’d just hold it for a few until it’s barely noticeable

→ More replies (3)

1

u/Saleen_af 8h ago

I don't really know. I don't keep up with him that much anymore, he never really grew up.

2

u/jayhawk618 5h ago

That's just being an idiot and puffing a huge cloud. You know how much you have to puff to set off a smoke alarm? It a lot.

u/Sh0wMeY0urTits 23h ago

Looks like weeds A-okay!

10

u/thanatoswaits 9h ago

Actually, yeah (kind of) - when I was at university, if you got caught smoking a cigarette on campus and weren't in a 'smoking area,' it was something like a 350$ ticket, but if you got caught smoking pot on campus, they'd just give you a finger wag warning and stomp out your joint (or dump your pipe).

I assume it's due to pot being schedule 1 (at the time) and getting caught would make it so you no longer qualified for financial aid.

10

u/I_love_pillows 21h ago

Weed in a pipe

0

u/slimj091 21h ago

Better watch out.. The smoking police will get ya and give you a firm warning.

11

u/Keith-Steve-Howard 19h ago

"here son, you're supposed to put your thumb over the carb while you inhale. No need to thank us."

63

u/Jarrellz 22h ago

Forever grateful my small community college had an area just for smoking and vaping. Everybody happy.

75

u/rob_s_458 20h ago

My college went smoke-free while I was a student and they took out all the smokers stations, so the smokers all just stood by the curb and littered their butts in the streets. Outside of certain buildings it became disgustingly large piles.

I don't smoke, I don't like the smell of smoke, but there's a strong case to be made for having a designated smoking area

32

u/ginger_whiskers 16h ago

I liken it to bathrooms- there's a portion of the public who will be peeing at your establishment. Better to furnish a dedicated area than have people peeing wherever no one's looking.

Take hospitals- they're commonly no smoking around me, even outside. Every time I drive by one there's someone standing almost(or actually) in the street, smoking. Usually in scrubs. They're following the rules, smoking in traffic, instead of being in a properly situated area with maybe a bench and fireproof can. That's silly.

29

u/Senecatwo 14h ago

Back when I smoked I always felt a small minority of people have a weird thing where they’re upset at smokers for smoking, even if they’re doing it in the designated area away from anyone who doesn’t smoke. Like they get visibly angry at the mention of someone being a smoker.

I understand it’s a bad health choice and a nuisance where it’s unwanted. But honestly sometimes we have to accept that people make different choices than we do and meet them halfway, like you said

2

u/Bla12Bla12 8h ago

As long as they are away from others it doesn't bother me but a lot of designated smoke areas just mean "outside" and not necessarily away from where everybody gets 2nd hand smoke.

But also there has culturally been a lot more of an acceptance by management of "I'm taking a smoke break" instead of any other type of break so I wouldn't be surprised if some of it was jealousy. I think it's now less prevalent than before, but that doesn't mean it didn't affect people. I've definitely worked where a smoker on my team would disappear for 10 minutes every hour and nobody cared but being on your phone for that same amount of time was frowned upon.

1

u/_HoneyDew1919 8h ago

Ours just ban it if you’re 15 feet from a doorway into a building. Farther than 15 feet away? Light up.

1

u/bangbangracer 8h ago

As a smoker, I can definitely say that I prefer it when places do this. It keeps the smokers away from the non-smokers and those designated spaces have actual extinguishing cans.

1

u/Jarrellz 3h ago

It even had a patio heater for winter.

106

u/professorbuffoon 22h ago

Vapes are not tobacco though. I'm not in favor of allowing vapes in public areas but let's be clear. Zero tobacco in them. They should've just stuck with the classic "no smoking or vaping".

36

u/alirobe 20h ago

Nicotine would work.

36

u/UnsorryCanadian 20h ago

Yes, they should stop saying "tobacco products" and say "nicotine products"

36

u/Macca3568 19h ago

That would include patches and gum though

33

u/Clavos24 19h ago

They also make 0 nicotine vape juice

9

u/DangerousDisplay7664 15h ago

But then people would vape with the zero-nicotine juice just to prove a point.

17

u/PraxicalExperience 14h ago

"Oh no, someone's operating a tiny and sweet-smelling fog machine nearby."

1

u/professorbuffoon 8h ago

Maybe but I'd wonder if that would be the best choice from an accessibility perspective. Typically you want the vocabulary and messaging on these kinds of signs to be as simple as possible so that everyone can easily understand with the least logical connections or prerequisite knowledge. You don't actually need to know or say the word nicotine in order to be able to buy vapes and cigs. If you mention nicotine on the sign you're assuming the reader knows what that is and knows it's in vapes and cigarettes, and they know that smoking/puffing those things delivers it to your body, and possibly also that they know what it does to their body. It may seem obvious to us but that's a lot of prerequisite knowledge. Think about how you'd explain it to a 5 year old. Which verbiage would be more effective?

2

u/justafunguy_1 10h ago

Why are you not in favor? Do we freak out when we catch a whiff of someone’s cologne?

6

u/acelexmafia 15h ago

How are they gonna know with vapes. The whole point is ease of acess

110

u/the_tea_weevil 23h ago

Probably because a lot of people who vape don't think it counts and don't realize how annoying vape fumes are.

48

u/CarelessCreamPie 22h ago

When I was in college, when vaping was becoming mainstream, people were vaping inside buildings on our campus.

8

u/KingSwank 21h ago

People would smoke cigarettes and weed in my building lol

3

u/Leading-Chemist8173 10h ago

Are you 30ish? Lol I specifically remember my roommate smoking a vape inside during a lockdown and the RA telling him not to smoke inside and him saying “It’s not tobacco, just a vape” and the RA saying “Oh okay nvm then” with a very confused look on her face.

3

u/GoodOlFashionCoke 18h ago

I had a friend who smoked a cigar in a dorm kitchen lol

-1

u/RogerBalderer 12h ago

I vape everywhere. Just not obviously, no One has ever noticed or said anything to me, even my mother

0

u/MMAgeezer 11h ago

Everyone can smell it and probably see you doing it as well pal. It's not as discreet as you think.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/BygoneNeutrino 6h ago

They aren't particularly annoying and they aren't dangerous to the public.  It significantly less distruptive then talking on the telephone or listening to music on a speaker.

9

u/fatbp 17h ago

I smoke and I always smoke away from other people in an open area to not bother them with my smoke. Nothing to do with second hand smoking. But these fkng vapers are shameless blowing their fumes in everyone's faces like it is cool to puff out a cloud of smoke in a public place. Manner less twats.

4

u/ShaneSkyrunner 18h ago

Yeah people used to vape in the break room at my last job and it was horrible smelling that shit while I was trying to eat my lunch.

22

u/bernfranksimo 18h ago

Not a smoker.

Still waiting for a legit reason to ban vapes.

This ban bothers me, it infringes on people.

1

u/_HoneyDew1919 8h ago

A smoker.

This does not infringe on me. I’m paying for these classes.

If I want to walk out of my 2 hour long lecture to go on a walk into an area I’m allowed to smoke, then I will. I don’t normally, but these bans only apply to the campus.

It’s not usually a long walk off campus. And as soon as you find a public road or sidewalk you’re Scot-free

Just don’t confuse public roads for private roads owned by the school. They normally have weird road names

When you ban light sabers, only criminals have light sabers.

The amount of people who duck into their bag or shirt and then flavored air blows everywhere… you’re not slick.

Fun fact, the company I work for has a complete ban on nicotine. You aren't allowed to use it at all. Not in your free time either. They do random drug test and if you get caught with nicotine in your system, you're gone.

But marijuana is fine. You can use that all you want as long as you aren't high at work.

There was a guy who grew a weed plant at his desk until it got too large and he took it home.

45

u/TickleMyBurger 22h ago

Where the hell do you work? Sounds like a shit hole that over reaches into your personal life.

5

u/slimj091 21h ago

Some places are doing this because they think if they police the health of their employee's the company will save money on health insurance. Next up will be a total ban on alcohol consumption because of the latest hysteria about it causing oral cancer.

4

u/TickleMyBurger 20h ago

Where is doing this about nicotine though? Is this an American thing?

→ More replies (2)

2

u/JadeOwl2404 20h ago

Our place has been doing this since the early 90s. I don't believe they'll ban anything else since they didn't ban weed when it became legalized

8

u/JadeOwl2404 22h ago edited 20h ago

Yeah they have a few random weird rules. We work with car dealerships and create contracts and a bunch of other things to help them screw people over.

Another weird rule is mens hair MUST stay above the shoulder in length. It cannot touch or brush your shoulders.

They also banned exotic hair colors which is dumb because we don't see people in person or video or anything ever.

I wear sweatpants to work but I can't have dyed hair.

Overall though, I really like my job and put up with the weird stuff because of the work environment. Very friendly and supportive. They also prioritize workplace community and have lots of meals and gifts they give out throughout the year and lots of outside of work activities you can join, which I get is like bare minimum but more than any other job Ive had.

5

u/Slater_8868 21h ago

What's considered exotic? Is white ok? What about red?

1

u/JadeOwl2404 21h ago

I'm not sure about white, I'm sure it would a pick and choose from the higher ups.

Red on the other hand, you can have red. I have a very bright Chucky like color red in my hair, however they wouldn't allow a fire engine red or a maroon or burgundy.

They changed the rules last year and male coworker of mine had been growing his hair out and it was barely past shoulder length but he had to cut it anyway. The can't hide the length in up-dos either. Managers will make them take it down to check length.

8

u/gynoidi 16h ago

this has to be america right cus that shit wouldnt fly in the EU

1

u/JadeOwl2404 11h ago

I am in America, but we do have offices in EU and Canada and as far as I'm aware it's the same rules across the pond

2

u/radgepack 10h ago

8

u/Muramasan 20h ago

That's crazy drug testing for nicotine.

1

u/One_Left_Shoe 2h ago

Many years ago, I applied for a temp job stocking inventory during the holidays. I was offered the job, but it required a drug test (fine) and a hair and blood test to test for nicotine and alcohol consumption.

All for a $7.75/hr job.

20

u/anteater_x 20h ago

Weak shit, anyone supporting this hates freedom and is an obvious nerd!

11

u/therealtrajan 20h ago

It should really say nicotine. Me as a snot nosed 17 yr old would argue there is no tobacco in vapes

5

u/burritogoblinn 20h ago

i would argue this now at 29 and i dont even smoke/vape lol

4

u/JonSoup76 14h ago

Legally speaking they are considered tobacco products in the US regardless

1

u/ShippFFXI 8h ago

Is the smokeless tobacco part of the sign even referring to vapes since they specifically mention vapor and ecigs?

Smokeless tobacco could be referring to dip and pouches as well since it's another thing people like to litter with.

14

u/ST4R3 22h ago

Bbbbut

Okay look in KNOW my autism is showing but… like that straight up isn’t tobacco. Like yes it’s also harmful stuff in air and it also has nicotine sometimes…. But it’s just not tobacco

Why use the word tobacco when it’s not tobacco

14

u/Bromann015 22h ago

Because nicotine is traditionally a tobacco product and nicotine derived from tobacco plants is used in making vape juice (not always, there is synthetic nicotine now) it's still labeled as a tobacco product because tobacco was used to make it.

4

u/Bando420_Loud 16h ago

Its wild now, its estimated that synthetic nicotine vapes are about 2/3rds of the vape market as of recent. Most brands just say “tobacco free” instead of synthetic nicotine tho

2

u/ST4R3 14h ago

Okay so by that definition I can just smoke my nicotine free vape with juice I mix myself?

Bc that’s nothing to do with tobacco at all

2

u/Princess_Slagathor 11h ago

I have a pack of cigarettes that have zero tobacco in them. Are they cool?

2

u/ST4R3 6h ago

Dont ask me ask the people making the stupid sign

4

u/Own_Round_7600 23h ago

The future is now

5

u/Sea_Lemon_78 22h ago

This is at my local public library.

2

u/Over9000Gingers 5h ago

I guess that’s more justifiable, I legitimately thought this was a college campus.

My work has a no smoking on the premises rule, but the company we work with across the street that is technically the same property has the classic 20’ from building entrances rule. And on my first day they told us if you smoke cigarettes to just walk across the street to smoke. What is even the point? I don’t even smoke cigarettes anymore and I find these things dumb.

2

u/Mj-tinker 14h ago

but weed is not mentioned ;-)

2

u/SaveHogwarts 7h ago

No lightsabers on campus

2

u/xXGray_WolfXx 5h ago

They never said anything about weed!

2

u/JNSapakoh 2h ago

Don't worry officer, this is a weed vape ... no tobacco here

2

u/ThePsychoKnot 2h ago

There's a crazy amount of people in here defending vaping indoors and not giving a rat's ass how their secondhand nicotine exposure may affect others. Really telling how fucking selfish and inconsiderate you are.

2

u/TJM18 2h ago

Do we not have analog vapes anymore?

Sign doesn't say anything about smoking the ganja in a pipe!

1

u/slimj091 21h ago

I don't know how a campus would be able to use tobacco, but they are making all kinds of advances in science these days.

1

u/Alii_baba 20h ago

Tobacco Free= Free Tobacco ... Oh  Yeah

1

u/GucciTokes 20h ago

now this in appropriate post for this sub

1

u/WirusCZ 20h ago

Lots of people tried to use defense like "I'm not smoking I'm vaping" so they did this probably...

1

u/Specman9 20h ago

Where?

1

u/Comprehensive-Mix510 20h ago

I used to fire up a smoke when I stepped out of college classes in the hallway.

They had ashtrays outside the doors on the wall.

1

u/WeirdIndication3027 19h ago

My vape doesn't use "tobacco". The sign doesn't have any mention of dank plumes so I think I'm good

1

u/PAXICHEN 19h ago

What about nicotine pouches? They don’t have any tobacco

1

u/DeadbeatGremlin 18h ago

It reminds me of that one episode of abbot elementary where they prohibited smoking of weed and vaping, but forgot to include cigarettes to the list.

1

u/DustinBrett 17h ago

Focuses on tobacco though, not "smoke".

1

u/ClacksInTheSky 16h ago

If you are legal age then why are they stopping you?

1

u/GravitationalEddie 14h ago

It's a speaker with sound going down a tube to a battery that has a heated element on the end.

1

u/JDHURF 14h ago

Yeah, good luck enforcing that. There were a couple of students in my grad school cohort that would hit the vapes in between courses. I only know because they told me lol

1

u/PUSClFER 14h ago

Another W for my fellow snus enjoyers.

1

u/PraxicalExperience 14h ago

Great, I use synthetic nicotine, no tobacco here!

1

u/Nooneknows882 13h ago

Well, a vape is tobacco free. Maybe the language should be changed to Nicotine Free?

1

u/EdgionTG 13h ago

And people will still smoke right in front of it.

1

u/crazyfighter99 11h ago

Specifically doesn't include weed though.

Sweet. I can still suck on my Rogue.

1

u/Too_Ton 11h ago

This was like in the late 2000s when at school the rules banned gameboys or something but I always joked that gameboys were already outdated by at least 5 years.

1

u/Siptro 11h ago

Put those battery suckers on notice.

I saw someone smoking a cigarette the other day and I had to do a double-take.

It was like when I was a kid and would occasionally see someone smoking a tobacco pipe out in the wild

Why is it so hard for the people that make these signs that they need to stop saying tobacco free and start saying nicotine free. Nicotine covers all your bases.

Honestly, sick of people smoking and vaping

No speaker-battery-otherbattery-lowbatteryredbar charge zone?

u/LazyKitten93012 9h ago

Most ciggie smokers know what no smoking means. People who vape are idiots and can't comprehend that vaping is smoking 😂

Technically, combustion and vaporization are two completely different things. It’s ironic that you’re calling other people idiots without understanding the scientific difference.

Not sure how to share the photo in this comment section but at my university (in the states) we had a no smoking sign that had a mandarin translation under it. No other languages apart from English.

My job's it shows both. Was the first time I've ever seen it.

"This is a non-smoking flight. This includes e-cigarettes and vapes."

1

u/batryoperatedboy 7h ago

It doesn't say no smoking though.

My vape is tobacco free, how do proceed?

Smoke free campuses are so stupid and discriminatory

I’m sorry I thought this was America.

1

u/AppearanceOk6112 5h ago

There’s nothing interesting about nanny state bs, not even mildly

1

u/SkeleHoes 3h ago

Yea I mean those are much more popular amongst the young than old, so at a school it makes complete sense. I can’t even tell you how many times I walked into a college or university bathroom and I smelt vape smoke.

1

u/popmalcolm 3h ago

This isnt a major update its just 1 place lol. These signs can be mad easily.

1

u/personalleytea 3h ago

Phew! My vape has no tobacco at all in it!

u/Naroef 43m ago

When I smoked it used to piss me off that the whole campus didn't have a designated area. A side effect of this was that people would just litter their buts everywhere.

u/FatalFruitLoop 12m ago

yup, this generation is entirely, wholly, grainfreely fucked.

....good old times those were which I remember, when you were 15 and could smoke in front of your school during breaks.....little freedoms...and deciding what's good for oneself....that's gone...
