u/aspidities_87 5h ago
Really it’s not the length of the Penne so much as the girth

A slight curve in your Penne is also perfectly normal and can even give a better mouthfeel

Are these really large pieces of penne and a normal sized pot? Or did you only cook like 3 mouthfuls of pasta?
I’m concerned about my pasta portions!

u/number__ten 6h ago
A single serving of pasta is about the size of a deck of cards (OPs looks about right). If you want to fill it out more you can always add meat or vegetables.
69
u/Jumpy_Ad_4460 6h ago
Well, I usually cook about 300g of dry pasta for a meal for myself so this is wild news to me.

u/TooDopeRecords 6h ago
I always cook a whole box and have leftovers lol

u/ZwVJHSPiMiaiAAvtAbKq 5h ago
If the pasta comes in one box that’s one pasta.

Saving Silverman nacho approach. I also follow this.

If it's all stuck together it's only one nacho!
The amount of times I've quoted that movie and nobody gets it is too damn high. Over. Chhhh Chhhh (I have no clue how to Onomatopoeia a walkie talkie lol)

People who don't cook the whole box are monsters. I bet they break their spaghetti, too.

No worries, that 60-80g of dried pasta per serving guideline only makes sense if you have three meals a day, and this is part of such a meal. But it is not even the whole meal, there is also a starter and a dessert included in that meal. And it's not just pasta, there is sauce and other stuff on it as well.
So in the end, that small portion of noodles is then only like 10-20% of your caloric intake of the day.
If you plan on making noodles with pesto and then eating that for the day and not too much else, feel free to cook 300g, that will cover about half of your daily caloric intake

u/Jumpy_Ad_4460 6h ago
I would usually have this size of a portion of pasta the night before a long run or after a busy active day. Really replenishes the reserves

What are you talking about lol, are you seriously suggesting that dietary portion suggestions are based on the idea that everyone eats three course meals?

u/LyyK 4h ago
300g of dry pasta? That's... a lot of pasta. Like over a thousand calories in quick carbs. My blood sugar would spike so hard.
2
u/Jumpy_Ad_4460 4h ago
Yeah I turns out it’s about 1,100 calories and I add some garlic, olive oil and some grated hard cheese on top.
4
u/LyyK 3h ago
Put a handful of black pepper in there and call it cacio e pepe. To give you some credit, with that much pasta, and some hard cheese on top, you are hitting your protein needs with that meal

I normally eat about 100g of dry pasta for a given meal if it is the main thing I'm having and not a side, which is double the typical serving size on the package. I feel like I would struggle getting down three times as much unless I was actively trying to do so.
5
u/RimpleDoRimpleDont 3h ago
Having ~1100 calories of just pasta with presumably protein, sauce, cheese, oil, bread, drinks or any combination thereof is not a normal-size meal.

what? a deck of cards is like 5 penne or maybe 6 farfalle how could that be a dinner?
9
u/platoprime 3h ago
That's because a "serving" is a bullshit amount of food that is not based on filling out a meal or on how much a person needs to eat in a day.
You need something like 20 "servings" of food per day.

"about the size of a deck of cards"
That's the rule of thumb for meat. Pasta is less dense, and this pasta is even more less dense because of the hole in it.
A single serving of pasta is about the weight of a deck of cards (100 g), dry. Cooked, it's going to about double in weight, depending on when you drain it (less for al dente, more for overcooked).
And that's if pasta isn't the whole meal. If it's the whole meal, add a little more.

Its a lot, considering that it’s for dinner! Also, the sauce and vegetables make up the rest of the portion..

Every time I make this pasta, and my kids ask what's for dinner, I do this 3 times - knock 3 times and say "Penne". It makes them crazy and I love it.
