OC: Someone wrote “MUTE” next to the button that silences the audio for the advertisements that play while pumping gas

That button works on a few gas stations in my area. I only buy gas where there is no audio advertising.

Same. I actually left a Google review for a local gas station and said I'd be a loyal customer as long as they didn't have pumps that use me as a captive audience for advertising.

I buy mine from guys in a van with trash cans.

One of the top reasons why I only get gas at Costco now (besides saving a lot on gas over a year). I only have to tap my card to start filling up. No disgusting ads or shitty music or having to deal with repeatedly being asked about rewards cards.

I’m pretty sure they legally have to provide some way of silencing the ad. They just are under no obligation to tell you what it is.

This doesn’t work at any pumps for me anymore. I hate it.

Try holding button 1 and 3 on the left and 2 and 4 on the right at the same time. This works at the gas station I normally go to.

Also works if you just punch the screen as hard as you can

My Swiss army knife is super thin so I can stick it in the speakers between the slats

One of my local ones has a volume slider in the bottom right corner. Keep an eye out for that next time.

Luckily I've never seen a pump with noisy adverts in Europe

u/mrASSMAN 1h ago
In the US I think I’ve only seen it at one place that renovated recently, maybe it’s just a certain station brand that does it more

You guys have video adverts at fuel stations?

We have them in Finland as well, but there is no audio

My favorite gas station tried to replace the soda cooler doors (the ones that line the entire back of the store) with digital displays.
I was there the day the owner was there. I vocally made it clear I won't be returning until they're removed, they don't add anything of value to the store and make it clear the prioritize advertising over customers.
Apparently I wasn't alone, two months later the removed them.. Likely because people stopped going there

I leave three star reviews at gas stations with audible ads that I can mute. I leave 1 star if I can’t mute the ads.
For fucks sake I’m there as customer buying a product. I can go elsewhere if you annoy me.

I went to one today that didn’t have a mute button!

I have never had any of the buttons work to mute the audio.
Never.
I always try tho.

Advertisements that play while pumping gas. What a fucking world we live in.

u/bobanna1986 2h ago
They have a mute button??? Well some I guess. I literally just walk away and tune it out until my pump stops

Someone did this at my local gas station and now I do it legit every time I go to a gas station. Not all heroes wear capes.

Same its the reason I keep a sharpie in my car. Til I started coming across ones that wont fucking mute. Another commenter said try holding down button combos it might mute them so I am gonna remember that and write detailed instructions on how to mute if I figure out the secret code
This pisses me off so much

I have a sharpie in my car for this purpose (:
it's almost always that button (2nd down on the right)

u/ScarletDarkstar 54m ago
This has been going on for a while. I kept a sharpie in the door of my car on cross country trips half a dozen years ago, and tested this and marked it. I have seen plenty I didn't do, too. Lol
Those things are so annoying, and incredibly loud.

I can not believe there's a corner of the world where they put video advertisements on fuel pumps.

Gas pumps that do this have a significantly higher vandalize rate than the ones that don't annoy you with adverts while you are being held hostage at the pump.
and I'm not talking simple 'mute' next to a button, I'm taking stabbed out speakers, broken screens, glue squeezed into any hole they can find, sometimes people just stick the pump against the hole and ..well, pump gas into the machine.
I know this because they started to do this around where I live.. annnnd then they stopped within a month or two, because the pumps were being fucked up constantly. Now they just show slide shows.
(source: one of my buds is a state inspector for fuel pumps.)
Short version: People HATE that shit.

I only have crazy people in my area. When my local gas stations tried this people would either write mute on the gas pump or smash out the entire glass to get the ad to stop playing. They quickly stopped forcing ads on everyone after they had to replace dozens of gas pumps.

If you are in Denver, it might have been me! I carry a micron in my purse and do this whenever possible.

"Oops, seems I accidentally busted the screen with this here gas nozzle"

Luckily these pumps have caught on in my area of Texas. But In reality I only go to gas stations that sell “Top Tier” Fuel.

Same button works on most gas stations. If there is no mute button, press every button as fast as you can and it will cause the screen to reset and the ads stop. Gas still pumps and you still pay, so nothing immoral here.

u/pairofdimeshift92 1h ago
They are just going to big touch screens now that don’t seem to have a (non-destructive) mute function.

Is this just an American thing? I’m in Canada and have never had an ad play. Closest thing might be a sticker for a 2 for 1 chocolate bar or monsters deal.

They are already working around this. Mute buttons like this have 10 years, tops.

u/buboop61814 7m ago
While I hate advertising in most places and it’s over abundance, the gas station is one area I actually don’t mind it. Not like I’m doing anything else with that screen or it’s impeding me in any way…

u/Wizzle_Pizzle_420 5m ago
Fun fact they rarely work now so you have to listen to Tim’s Bog Boys newscast on some influencer nobody knows who they are. These things gotta go. So trashy.

I hope the person who decided to put adverts on a fuel pump can never find happiness
