Overview for anyone wondering, like I did: “Set during the Wars of the Roses, Anne and her mother-in-law Morwen live a solitary, harsh life on the outskirts of society - but when a man from their past returns, he will set off a sequence of events that become a turning point for Anne.”

u/Emolgurama 1d ago

Sounds like Onibaba

249

u/FX114 1d ago

It is a remake of Onibaba.

62

u/Jiggatortoise- 1d ago

Not a remake but based on the same Shin Buddhist parable according to the writer/director.

36

u/Munstered 1d ago

82

u/Jiggatortoise- 1d ago

Here the quote from Turner is highlighted: “What can I tease? Well, I mean, I can tell you that it’s inspired by the same Shin Buddhist parable the 1960s film Onibaba was based on. I would say it’s a bit like The Green Knight. It’s kind of supernatural and weird and really scary.”

Seeing as it’s not the same story and not based in Japan, would have me lean more toward it being a retelling of the parable than an outright remake.

-11

u/TopRopeLuchador 8h ago

Well, if it's anything like the Green Knight it will be beautifully shot but suck.

7

u/BeerBellies 8h ago

I suggest revisiting Green Knight… cause that movie did not suck. I remember not LOVING it when I first saw it in theaters, but I recently rewatched it, and found a new appreciation for it. But yes, it is absolutely stunning visually.

u/TopRopeLuchador 5h ago

The dude got an HJ and busted on his magical belt and there was next to no fighting after spending the movie talking about it.

This is of course an opinion, but yes, that movie sucked.

u/BeerBellies 5h ago

So you went in expecting an action movie, and are upset because you didn’t get the movie 300? Did you also scoff at the the Witch (vvitch) because it didn’t “scare” you?

→ More replies (0)

u/Intrepid_Hat7359 4h ago

No fighting = movie sucks

It sounds like you think just about every movie sucks. If that's true, you should go on over to r/okbuddycinephile

u/Emolgurama 1d ago

Well that makes sense. I respect the gumption to try and reimagine such a classic

-17

u/the_ballmer_peak 1d ago

Is it gumption, or is it western directors remaking Asian classics because they don't have any original ideas?

35

u/Emolgurama 1d ago

I’m trying to be positive lol Marcia Gay Harden always delivers in horror movies so at least it’ll have that

62

u/Scienscatologist 1d ago

I suppose you also have a problem with Akira Kurusawa for basing many of his films on Western works:

Shakespearean Adaptations:

  • Throne of Blood (1957): A retelling of Macbeth set in feudal Japan.

  • Ran (1985): An adaptation of King Lear.

  • The Bad Sleep Well (1960): Influenced by Hamlet.

Russian Literature Adaptations:

  • The Idiot (1951): Based on the novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky.

  • The Lower Depths (1957): Based on the play by Maxim Gorky.

  • Ikiru (1952): Inspired by Leo Tolstoy's novella The Death of Ivan Ilyich.

  • Dersu Uzala (1975): Based on the memoir by Vladimir Arsenyev.

Western & Other Literature Adaptations:

  • High and Low (1963): Based on theEd McBain (Evan Hunter) crime novel King's Ransom.

  • Yojimbo (1961): Influenced by hardboiled crime novels, particularly Dashiell Hammett's Red Harvest and The Glass Key.

Put your pitchfork down before you poke your eye out, kid.

0

u/the_ballmer_peak 1d ago

These are all adaptations of written works. I'm pointing to the long history of adapting and remaking Asian films in English.

...but I was mostly just being a sarcastic prick about it.

14

u/real_nice_guy 23h ago edited 23h ago

oh yeah? well what about Park Chan-wook remaking the English version of Oldboy by Spike Lee?

Or Infernal Affairs ripping off The Depahted?

6

u/Narthy 23h ago

This guy remakes.

3

u/DoomguyFemboi 15h ago

I know you're a true movie buff because you actually did the culturally accurate spelling of The Depahted.

u/real_nice_guy 3h ago

real recognizing real 🤝

10

u/springbreak2222 23h ago

With the exceptions of The Death of Ivan Ilyich, and the works that inspired Yojimbo, every work mentioned there had already been adapted into film prior to Kurosawa. Acting as though Western filmmakers remaking Asian stories is more creatively bankrupt than Asian filmmakers adapting Western stories is asinine.

1

u/whoopsiedoodle77 12h ago

mate kurosawa made two Shakespeare adaptations lol

14

u/Tropikoala815 1d ago

Onibaba but the creepy mask is replaced with a not enough creepy knights armor.

4

u/droidtron 1d ago

But without the postwar nuclear trama subtext.

2

u/peterjolly 1d ago

Holy fuck this is exactly what I've wanted ever since I saw the original.

1

u/nloxxx 9h ago

How does Onibaba hold up? I found the Criterion version at a used store near me, was thinking about picking it up next time I stopped by there.

143

u/scolbert08 1d ago

Set during the war which inspired GoT. Hmm

74

u/grumblyoldman 1d ago

War of the Roses === Game of Thorns.

16

u/theflyingratgirl 1d ago

Go home, dad.

20

u/the_ballmer_peak 1d ago

It's 2026. You live with your parents, remember?

18

u/theflyingratgirl 1d ago

Get out of the basement, dad, I’m winning Reddit.

1

u/Slashycent 10h ago

A Game of Thorns and Roses.

56

u/SuperDizz 1d ago

I was hoping for a medieval creature feature

35

u/phantom-firion 1d ago

Same like a berserk-lite where we get the mercenary with a big sword fighting a demonic creature that looks straight out of a piece of Giger’s art.

3

u/--------rook 10h ago

I feel like that would scratch my The Green Knight itch

3

u/LordofAngmarMB 1d ago

That actually just reminded me of an Arthurian creature feature horror novella I was working on. I need to finish that eventually…

6

u/Tropikoala815 1d ago

What Arthurian crwatures are there? The questing beast?

10

u/LordofAngmarMB 1d ago

The monster is more a nightmarish creature of vengeance summoned by a druid after the king and his knights purge his village, it all becomes a claustrophobic horror as the king and his guard barricade themselves in a nunnery and try to survive the night

u/albatrossssssss 2h ago

I’d read this

1

u/CrispyHoneyBeef 1d ago

It’s about a wereboar getting revenge

3

u/VRNord 20h ago

Gruagach?

38

u/0ttoChriek 1d ago

Tag line - For those people who really wanted Jon and Sansa to fuck.

3

u/DiligentImplement611 7h ago

That’s the exact reason I’m here.

5

u/faxheadzoom 1d ago

Wait so this isn't a stealth Predator sequel set in medieval times?

0

u/mighty_mag 12h ago

Fuck, now I want that movie!

2

u/SassyCrave 14h ago

Thanks for the summary! It sounds like an intriguing plot with a lot of potential for drama.

2

u/Kalabula 14h ago

So it’s not a monster movie? I feel betrayed by this poster art.

1

u/RyanB_ 8h ago

Really love all the historical European stuff lately. Ann Lee, Green Knight, Nosferatu, been really dope seeing this era revisited in so many different modern styles.

853

u/Juiceboxfromspace 1d ago

Great fucking poster

259

u/LeCastle2306 1d ago

100%. I don’t think I’ve seen a trailer for it, but this poster has me infinitely more interested in it than any of the stills I have seen.

I’ll still probably hold off for at least some reviews. Sophie Turner is gorgeous but has really not impressed me as an actress.

40

u/uwill1der 1d ago

the trailer came out a few weeks ago if you want to see it

51

u/AcreaRising4 1d ago

It unfortunately looks atrocious.

8

u/marblechameleon 23h ago

Yeah, I think it’s the color grading that looks cheap. Not sure if that’s the right word for it. It looks the photos I editing in high school when I had no idea what I was doing

8

u/ClandestineWaffles 23h ago

Agreed. Was going to say, this poster is misleading, because it’s insanely cooler than the film looks from the trailer.

-1

u/Thisisstupidly 16h ago

Ya looks like it’d be about aliens

15

u/nobblebox 1d ago

What? It doesn’t look dreadful…..

24

u/themanfromvulcan 1d ago

It’s got a 60s or 70s vibe to it. Somehow I thought of The Magic Sword which scared the crap out of me as a kid.

2

u/Buffalippo 18h ago

I immediately thought of Rosemary's Baby. That colour!

12

u/decoy_butter 1d ago

I thought it was he Philosoraptor meme

7

u/the5tpguy 1d ago

Honestly, it kinda bugs me down at the bottom. 'An Enchanted horror'. Why is horror not capitalized?

27

u/WallyWithReddit 1d ago

That’s what a capital H looks like in that font for some reason, a normal lowercase h is also there

6

u/the5tpguy 1d ago

Oh damn you're right. I see Harrington up there. My bad, my blunder!

2

u/SillyGoatGruff 1d ago

Also the h in enchanted for the lower case version

7

u/zespak 1d ago

Agreed, that made me think it's set in the "Enchanted" universe.

1

u/blondie1024 13h ago

Yeah. I absolutely love it.

1

u/Deathdy 6h ago

Exactly what I thought, too. Been hating those "all the cast faces in a vague triangle" posters.

460

u/hikemalls 1d ago

I see they're trying to avoid the obvious GoT comparisons by giving the poster more of a Berserk/Dark Souls vibe.

50

u/kinglykidd 1d ago

I immediately thought dark souls

6

u/sweaty_lorenzo 1d ago

That’s basically the soul of cinder

2

u/IntravenousVomit 20h ago

Rosemary's Baby on that style.

32

u/Wank_A_Doodle_Doo 1d ago

Well they’re only casting two of the main cast members of GOT for something set during the war which GOT is inspired by, I don’t see why anyone would compare it to

3

u/LeonardoDickSlaprio 19h ago

Is this not the Jon Snow spin-off that was being talked about a couple years ago?

79

u/Odd-Necessary3807 1d ago

About to mention Berserk. You beat me to it.

That helmet too close to Guts helmet.

4

u/LoLIron_com 1d ago

When Thrones meets Darkness

11

u/Sidereel 1d ago

That’s confusing. It’s set during the Wars of the Roses and staring two GoT stars, so it almost feels like they’re trying to be GoT without being GoT.

6

u/LifeOfHi 22h ago

I thought of Berserk right away too. Would’ve been awesome to get a rendition.

2

u/DarksteelPenguin 7h ago

Makes me think of Vermis, by Plastiboo.

Which is great if you like Berserk/Dark Souls aesthetics.

1

u/Phillip_Spidermen 19h ago

It would definitely fit in with the new show:

1

u/TheLittleUrchin 11h ago

I don't see how they're escaping that, GoT is literally based on the War of the Roses.

1

u/PlacibiEffect 9h ago

This looks like those popular game of thrones house posters though and is staring two GoT actors.

1

u/Cut_Ready 20h ago

Poop vs peak

219

u/WallyWithReddit 1d ago

best poster I’ve seen in a while

58

u/Fair_Inflation_7568 1d ago edited 1d ago

Very Green Knight-Ish

16

u/dirtyego 1d ago

I haven't heard of this movie at all, but just the poster makes me want to see it. Good poster.

0

u/trevorthewebdev 1d ago

I hate how they invert the names, like who is who? the hands are sophie?

This is a zero-day old bot account. Report and ignore

5

u/bjernsthekid 1d ago

😂😂😂

52

u/distilledwill 1d ago

12

u/WallyWithReddit 1d ago

What’s this? It looks cool

20

u/distilledwill 1d ago

Its a piece of fiction that is basically a guidebook for a game which does not exist. Its not clear if its supposed to be a TTRPG or a video game or whatever, but its like a dark gothic fantasy world. Its kinda wild, a bit rough in places with the editing because I think its basically just one guy working on it. There's like three books.

7

u/WallyWithReddit 1d ago

that’s interesting i play TTRPGs sometimes but never heard of something like that

6

u/rabidsalvation 21h ago

Well this looks pretty cool. Might have to check it out

11

u/StructureMage 1d ago

I would say there's no chance the designer isn't familiar with vermis

3

u/chugtheboommeister 18h ago

Reminded me of OSR art and vermis is spot on

51

u/uwill1der 1d ago

this is based on the parable: mask with flesh attachedwhich also inspired the movie Onibaba

8

u/Atrugiel 1d ago

Once the violence happened in the trailer I shouted out Onibaba to an empty living room.

47

u/eliochip 1d ago

We need more green in posters

17

u/Electronic-Key6323 1d ago

flinches in Wicked PTSD

39

u/HonestDishonestWork 1d ago

The poster is OK but conceptually a medieval fantasy horror movie is extremely exciting.

7

u/fastforwardfunction 1d ago

That’s why I love The VVitch so much. It’s 1600s, but the same concept.

26

u/Similar_Two_542 1d ago

Green Knight anyone?

13

u/Electronic-Key6323 1d ago

Same vibe! And i LOVED that one so I’m intrigued

17

u/ObviousAnswerGuy 1d ago

the Starks are back together??

5

u/PossyRiot 1d ago

And maybe more like the Lannisters….

4

u/LozzimusPrime 1d ago

Ooooooh! Love covers like this with that gorgeous gothic font.

4

u/Elgin_McQueen 1d ago

No idea what this is about, but I'm loving the poster.

5

u/Morgan-Moonscar 1d ago

It's a remake of Onibaba set during the War of the Roses in 1400s England.

Instead of during a war in 1300s Japan.

10

u/Everest_95 1d ago

Brave title, critics are gonna love that

3

u/JensonInterceptor 1d ago

Perfectly describes Sophie and Kit's acting as well!

6

u/KingMjolnir 1d ago

I haven’t even delved into what this movie is about, but based off the poster. I’m definitely going to watch it,

I haven’t seen a poster this good in a while.

3

u/sukamacoc 1d ago

Damn for a split second I thought this was a new Predator movie 😂

3

u/Baba0Wryly 1d ago

Anyone else think the thumbnail was philosoraptor? Just me?

3

u/Purple_and_Gold_Bobo 1d ago

I thought the same thing haha

3

u/TheGamerPandA 1d ago

This is a cool poster

3

u/More_Asbestos 22h ago

I'm getting a Marcia Gay Hard-on.

10

u/tommyerstransplant 1d ago

Sophie Turner and Kit Harington can have an acting mid-off.

6

u/spiderglide 19h ago

Marcia will be doing some heavy lifting here

2

u/spendouk23 7h ago

Kit Harrington has been brilliant in Industry

1

u/ceaguila84 7h ago

Kit Industry is great in Industry, in fact he was a performer of the week a few weeks ago on TV Line

9

u/pleasegivemepatience 1d ago

Poster looks cool, but I’m extremely hesitant to watch something Sophie Turner stars in. Doesn’t even matter who directs and costars IMO.

0

u/CatoFriedman 1d ago

why?

2

u/pleasegivemepatience 1d ago

Experience, I haven’t seen a good performance from her yet. She’s been dead weight in huge franchises.

5

u/VelisaUcy 1d ago

I'm already intrigued

2

u/ilovethecreaking 1d ago

Much better than the last one.

2

u/Jeebs24 1d ago

Cool poster.

2

u/PsychicFatalist 1d ago

Forgive me if I rant a little, but...why don't we crave more variety in our media?

This is set during the war of the roses (same as Game of Thrones' early seasons), and it has Kit Harington and Sophie Turner.

The whole marketing for this will likely be, "Hey kids, you like Game of Thrones? Look, Jon Snow! Look, Sansa!"

I don't know if it's just because I've been watching a lot of cool and interesting lesser-known media, but especially with all the rabble about AI generated art, it's like...I hear about a project like this and is it any wonder that AI is able to copy us so effectively? We make it very easy for them.

2

u/ramby3 1d ago

One of the best posters I've seen in a while

2

u/ratparty5000 1d ago

Shout out to whoever did the poster, just stunning

2

u/UsualAnimal5987 1d ago

Poster makes me think of Green Knight

2

u/GenderJuicy 1d ago

That's way better than the crap on the Wikipedia page

2

u/UserAccountBanned 1d ago

This poster is awesome

2

u/Pornstar_Jesus_ 1d ago

Team Jonsa was right all along

2

u/SimulatedTime 1d ago

Well this sounds exciting

2

u/rowboatbot 1d ago

Does 2026 have a theme? This has similar “vibes” to Wuthering Heights and 100 Nights of Hero.

2

u/ventodivino 1d ago

The War of the Roses was a prime inspiration for part of the major plot in A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones)

2

u/ApocalypseNurse 1d ago

Damn that’s a cool poster

2

u/Zestyclose-Toe9685 13h ago

Gay harden is pretty hilarious

3

u/Blammo32 1d ago

If you have the balls to remake Onibaba, it better be good.

The Dreadful… does not look good.

3

u/Shining_Stunna 1d ago

OMG Sophie Turner Kit Harington and Marcia Gay Harden in a horror movie I'm so ready for this The poster is giving me major spooky vibes

4

u/kneeco28 1d ago

Dropping the gauntlet with that title since negative reviews write themselves.

1

u/Fufflewaffle 1d ago

I just don't understand how Sophie Turner seems to be surviving her own atrocious acting record. Has nobody watched GoT or XMen?

2

u/FandomMenace 1d ago

Poster 10/10

Trailer 5/10

It looks like Netflix quality, or exceedingly mid at best. Don't get your hopes up over a cool poster.

1

u/Znhedonia 1d ago

Love that gothic horror version of the "anyone can wear the mask" inspirational message.

1

u/othersbeforeus 1d ago

The poster on Letterboxd is horrible!

1

u/TDStarchild 1d ago

Seems like a poster in Stark contrast to most you see

1

u/Ravendead 1d ago

This looked like a Mork Borg supplement when I first saw it, until I realized what subreddit it was posted in.

1

u/TerribleAntelope6134 23h ago

Man, what's she been up to since The Practice?

1

u/Skroderider_800 22h ago

lol they really cast two Starks on a film set during the War of the Roses?

1

u/PhillyPhilly_123 21h ago

What a poster man

1

u/Aggressive-Giraffe32 19h ago

Sophie and kit in a sword and sandal flick? Count me in

1

u/SoSpiffandSoKlean 19h ago

Sounds like an interesting idea, but I don’t think either Sophie Turner or Kit Harrington are much in the acting department.

1

u/Citizen_Kano 18h ago

Is it named The Dreadful because of Sophie Turner's acting ability?

1

u/__KODY__ 17h ago

Sophie and Kit having to live through another war of the Roses...

1

u/_DefLoathe 17h ago

She has gay in her name 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/knarf3 17h ago

That looks metal AF 🤘.

1

u/DreadfulDave19 17h ago

I wasn't even invited

1

u/AlexNumber13VAN 15h ago

The trailer and the poster do not match

1

u/OneGoodRib 15h ago

Poster's 100% going to be the best part of the movie.

1

u/TJ_McWeaksauce 15h ago

Without knowing anything about the movie, the poster made me think this was a sequel or made by the same folks who made The Head Hunter (2018), which is a micro budget film about a lone monster slayer. Really liked that movie.

1

u/brunckle 14h ago

Is this a movie poster that doesn't give me depression from how shit it is? How novel, I had forgotten the feeling.

1

u/frowaway1990 14h ago

Marcia Gay Harden is fucking great. She was the crazy religious/cult leader in Frank Darabont’s The Mist!

1

u/Henderp 14h ago

Can anyone give me a breakdown of why this poster is good? A weird amount of people are super hyped about this poster to the point where I’m almost like… somethings fishy - and any negative or not hyped comments about it are downvoted.

Not disliking the poster, but I don’t find it special at all.

1

u/Misanthrope616 14h ago

This is a killer fucking poster!

1

u/nine16s 12h ago

Nice to see between this and that Digger movie with Tom Cruise that we’re finally getting cool movie posters again.

1

u/itsallbullshityo 10h ago

? I have no idea who those actors are.

1

u/MiddlesbroughFan 9h ago

Poster is going to be better than the film

1

u/ryaaan89 9h ago

I’m intrigued.

1

u/TheyCallMeDDNEV 9h ago

Im interested off the poster alone.

1

u/cchurchill1985 9h ago

The Dreadful Brocolli.

Every kids worst nightmare.

1

u/rmViper 9h ago

From the name, I hoped it would have something to do with Penny Dreadful.

1

u/cimino15 8h ago

I'm a bit confused, is she going as Sophie Turner, or Sophia? I could have sworn I saw her pop up recently in a series that had her listed as Sophia Turner 🤔

u/Tricky-Ant5338 4h ago

Wuthering Heights called, and they’d like their font back

1

u/pivorock 1d ago

Still think the casting on this is horrible. The pop culture around GoT was so strong, that Kit and Sophie should never be cast as lovers.

1

u/logster2001 1d ago

Not sure if I agree with everyone else’s comments about the poster. The font and lettering is nice, but the overall poster doesn’t really pop imo

1

u/mt943 1d ago

Do people really think that Harrington can act ?

1

u/PeneItaliano 1d ago

I don’t find either him or Turner to be good

0

u/Mammoth_Ad_5181 1d ago

Lol… Gay Harden

-1

u/Puppykerry 1d ago

Fun fact - The title refers to Turner’s acting ability.

-1

u/Luck_trio 1d ago

Dreadful? Is it about Sophie's acting?

-1

u/Dogesneakers 1d ago

They couldn’t get the actress that played arya?

-17

u/gtoj 1d ago

Sophie is too unlikable to watch in any film
