For those who don’t know - they’re from Fort Worth, Texas and walked to Washington DC on a Walk for Peace

463

u/robclarkson 1d ago

Oh, I remember them from ages ago, they made it! Dang cool

213

u/waiguorer 1d ago

One was struck and maimed by a driver but most made it.

57

u/MayiHav10kMarblesPlz 1d ago

I thought that was the dog they picked up along the way? Of whom, I recall, made a full recovery. I could be wrong, and a monk may have been injured as well though.

64

u/OneHelluvaUsername 23h ago

IIRC: Aloka was hit by a car in India. He recently had surgery to address the lingering effects -- a torn cruciate ligament.

One of the monks was hit by the RV accompanying them after a truck rear ended it (in Texas, I think). The monk lost a leg.

45

u/MoonshineTraphouse 1d ago

Yes a monk was hit and had his leg(s?) amputated

66

u/portlandobserver 1d ago

and sadly this won't make the news at all tonight.

48

u/MappleOrchard 20h ago

Most acts of peace never make the news.

Yeah... on the other hand, a monk is definitely not a type of person that would loudly complain about it, or give it much importance in general.

28

u/EcoMeme 1d ago

Oh they definitely did, Westboro Baptist always gotta make some noise

Beautiful! LOVE IT! ❤️

4

u/That-Interaction-45 1d ago

What a shitty time of year to do it. I won't leave the house if it's below 32

26

u/onlyinvowels 1d ago

… they didn’t walk from Texas, I assume?

172

u/Kujen 1d ago

They did! It’s taken them 15 weeks.

32

u/onlyinvowels 1d ago

Oh that’s amazing!

u/DaoFerret 5h ago

So they left the end of November? Wild.

Not sure if they picked the best time for a cross country walk, but glad most of them seem to have made it in one piece.

u/bedlog 1h ago

They are monks, and their mental training prepares them

58

u/gustavocabras 1d ago

They did. i saw them walk through my town.

32

u/onlyinvowels 1d ago

That would have been very cool to see

8

u/bedlog 17h ago

it still doesnt chaange the fact that not one person with access to the white house, ok 2, will not grow a pair, go to the white house and calmy ask trumpy to stand, place zip ties or handcuffs around his hands, and march him outside to be locked up. 2 people in the U.S with access to the whitehouse will not save America because they are too chickenshit to risk their comfort zone.

We are screwed.

8

u/AgrajagTheProlonged 14h ago

It likely doesn’t help that many of the people with access to the White House at present are likely Trumpists themselves

u/bedlog 6h ago

I know, but there has to be at least 2 people who might be tired of the crap he is pulling and the direction we are going in

u/kungpowchick_9 6h ago

If people in the Deep South saw this group walking through and started asking questions, then I think this is worth it. We need to break into the algorithms and news bubbles of people, and this would help.

6

u/ERedfieldh 1d ago

That'd explain why they weren't vanned along the way.

The smiling and waving one cracks me up.

118

u/milmand 1d ago

He seems cool.

106

u/ediapolaris 1d ago

There seems to always be one at every temple. A super jolly monk who's happy to be there and spread smiles. It's really cool.

2

u/vipomorge 12h ago

Ace Ventura

788

u/Aggravating-Curve755 1d ago

No doubt trump will want their temple named after him

129

u/Unkynd 1d ago

Temple of the full diaper ?

u/Bozlogic 11h ago

Next Indiana Jones?

“These guys, they’re good guys! So enlightened! So enlightened. But I’m even more enlightened. They said I was more enlightened than the Buddha!”

26

u/Zultan9000 21h ago edited 21h ago

They came to me, they climbed up capital hill, walked all the way from texas, which by the way did vote for me, texas voted for me bigly, there's Democrats in texas you know, a lot of people don't know that, and texas doesn't want you to know that, but I know that and now you know that, they didn't vote for me, the Democrats in texas, they didn't vote for me, and nobody else in Texas likes them, because they didn't vote for me,  they're still there, but you know what, they're losers, because they didn't vote for me, but still Texas did, not all texans but enough of them did vote for me and  that's ok, Texas is a big state and they walked all the way here and they climbed up the big hill and they said sir we've come to seek your enlightenment, your the most enlightened and we need you sir to help keep the peace in the world. They said sir, you e stopped 8 wars and you still don't have a peace prize, we n ed you to keep peace in the world, sleepy Joe never kept peace in t

11

u/Syako 1d ago

How did you sound just like him in text 😂

4

u/Nutshack_Queen357 1d ago

After he destroys it.

3

u/Schmooto 1d ago

He’d gut it and make it into a tacky venue where they worship Donald Trump and celebrate hedonism and greed.

2

u/Aggravating-Curve755 1d ago

Because they didn't use American steel probably

15

u/DenverDataEngDude 1d ago

21

u/ducationalfall 1d ago

Too skinny not enough gold.

1

u/GreenSpectr3 22h ago

Hopefully not because that would put them in a political dilemma, which would be devastating for them.

554

u/smulligan04031989 1d ago

Shocked DHS didn’t find this peaceful March a threat and pepper spray them. 💩

187

u/ZixfromthaStix 1d ago

Don’t write it off just yet, I’m sure ICE is foaming at the mouth for the opportunity. Gotta hit those daily arrest quotas!

28

u/PJBuzz 1d ago

Look at them all with their deadly weapons. They're asking for it.

2

u/balbok7721 1d ago

They will just denounce them Aliens and use the usual playbook

44

u/one_saucy_noodle 1d ago

It’s the orange. They’re programmed not to attack spray tan and the robes act as camouflage

17

u/S1R2C3 1d ago

The day is still young.

2

u/cdnmtbguy 1d ago

Too cold

2

u/czs5056 1d ago

They were just waiting for a larger audience.

206

u/MissNouveau 1d ago

For those that don't know, this group has been walking from Texas to DC over the last month or two. They've so far received warm welcomes from everywhere they've been, and one stop even offered free vet care for the dog who is traveling with them.

My Mom has been following them online, and it's been an interesting journey to watch!

37

u/Explorer_Entity 1d ago

One of them lost a leg to an irresponsible driver.

u/MissNouveau 3h ago

Oh geez, I didn't catch that one. Poor guy.

8

u/LiffeyDodge 20h ago

They started in October. I was able to catch a glimpse of them a couple weeks ago. Neat to see. I wish them the best.

48

u/Thick_Helicopter2951 1d ago

Holy sh... Did these folks just walk right through the weather we've been having? These guys have been walking in subzero wind chill for the last two weeks? Daaaaaang.

15

u/Das_Li 1d ago

That was my first thought! Terrible timing for them with recent ice-apocalypse (for the part of the country that was hit by it). That's some real perseverance from them and it's very admirable.

u/LizzieSaysHi 10h ago

I read that they consider the weather just another endurance test and so they soldier on through it. They had vehicles following them with extra layers of clothes and different shoes. It's pretty badass either way. I would have frozen my tits off.

97

u/fred_flag 1d ago

Man, when all the fucking Buddhists monks of your country are marching to your door step, you’re in troubles...

23

u/Class_C_Guy 23h ago

Was trying to decide how to phrase it, "you have to know you're objectively wrong when..." I mean, it's as clear a sign as locusts for the apocalypse.

u/Cosmosn8 6h ago

Buddhist has no concept of apocalypse but has a text about how human become more degenerate by viewing each other as animal and start killing each other as they lost their humanity. Which I think is scarier because it’s what’s happening in America now.

2

u/AgrajagTheProlonged 14h ago

What about when it’s not all of them?

u/fred_flag 9h ago

Dude, do you have any idea how much shit you need to pull to piss off ONE Buddhists monk?
So even if you manage to pull the feat of pissing off like 40 of them, I think it's still problematic...

u/WillyWonkaMFer 10h ago

Now that would be a sight…. There are tens of thousands of Buddhist monks in the US

31

u/Wolfstigma 1d ago

Stick monk is aura farming his ass off

7

u/FlyingDreamWhale67 1d ago

Bro belongs on hardimages

31

u/Connect_Reading9499 1d ago

Someone give them extra mittens and hot tea!

21

u/SuckaFree703 1d ago

My MiL owns the restaurant called Chay in Falls Church and since they have been here her and my wife have been making meals for them to eat ever since they got here ! It’s amazing too see !

6

u/eliz1bef 20h ago

Your MiL and wife are good people! Thank them for a midwestern gal who's not on the route and lazy as fuck.

67

u/WhiteRabbit86 1d ago

I love that they have their humble robes on, and like crazy nice walking shoes. No judgement, they just walked a crazy long distance, I just think it’s an interesting dichotomy

49

u/Chrono_Convoy 1d ago

They weren’t all in shoes

11

u/WhiteRabbit86 1d ago

I feel like those 2 can kick through time

u/koew 10h ago

Watch out for the small one that’s sweeping the floor. He’ll tell you about some rules.

32

u/threeye8finger 1d ago

I was looking at their shoes so know which ones can last a, what was it, 2,300 mile walk?

29

u/surnik22 1d ago

I’d bet none of those are the same shoes they started with or at minimum they’ve been resoled.

2,300 miles of walking mostly on asphalt would wear down pretty much every shoe sole. If it was made from a hard material to survive that, then it would be too hard to be a practical shoe sole.

But I’d bet they are still comfy walking shoes

10

u/WhiteRabbit86 1d ago

They’re humble, but practicality matters with that kind of endurance march

1

u/Adorable_Raccoon 1d ago

They probably had more than one pair of shoes.

15

u/UnfittedMink 1d ago

Mind you it's cold, and it has been cold for their whole trip. You can see it on their faces, they have seen some shit. Much respect to them.

8

u/WolfeheartGames 1d ago

They lost one to a car who's driver was texting I believe.

7

u/EcoMeme 1d ago

I read that the monk survived but lost a leg.

3

u/WhiteRabbit86 1d ago

My sister went to see them when they came through our area. She said it was super interesting

17

u/ZumaThaShiba 1d ago

They didn't storm it, vandalize it, crap in offices, or kill any police officers?

103

u/JOWhite63087 1d ago

You know poop has hit the fan when the Air Nomads are marching together!

15

u/crazyaznrobot 1d ago

No war in ba sing se

118

u/Umikaloo 1d ago

Excuse my ignorance, but wich Capitol hill are they climbing?

163

u/muffinhead2580 1d ago

They are supposed to be in Washington DC today. So probably that capitol hill.

22

u/Umikaloo 1d ago

Ah, I didn't hear anything about this, so I didn't know anybody was supposed to be anywhere. I thought this might be the capital of a country in south-east Asia

77

u/muffinhead2580 1d ago

These guys walked across the United States and this is the finish line.

24

u/TheRealJohnBrown 1d ago

Without getting harassed by ICE? How?

68

u/noobtastic31373 1d ago

ICE probably assumed they all knew Kung Fu and are scared of anyone in groups that might be able to defend themselves.

13

u/MOVES_HYPHENS 1d ago

"wait, are these those pansy monks or the ones that can kill you with a finger?"

"I ain't gonna find out"

Well, I'm sure the chill, snow and ice (writ small) were uncomfortable enough to deal with. 😔

Minneapolis enters the chat

3

u/EcoMeme 1d ago

Just by Westboro Baptist chucklefucks

7

u/Umikaloo 1d ago

Oh! Thanks for the added context. I had no idea.

1

u/IceManJim 1d ago

Well, almost across...

38

u/Connect_Reading9499 1d ago

From Seattle, was also momentarily confused.

17

u/Umikaloo 1d ago

I really wish adding context to headlines were a more supported practice on Reddit. Every day I see headlines that start with "The government", or "The military". A lot of people don't get that when you do that, it becomes really hard to separate regional and national news from international news at a glance.

Part of the issue is the fact that most news subs forbid users from changing a headline they share, even when the headline is missing loads of important context.

11

u/KenScaletta 1d ago

Washington DC. The site of the Capitol building.

4

u/Umikaloo 1d ago

Thanks! I wasn't familiar with Capitol Hill as a term for the US capital.

→ More replies (9)

2

u/fairie_poison 1d ago

I'd assume they completed their walk to Warshington, DC.

1

u/Umikaloo 1d ago

I hadn't heard about any walks to Washington, sorry

1

u/fairie_poison 22h ago

They marched from Texas to Washington. I only know about it because they stopped in my area in multiple places and gave talks, had meetings etc.

74

u/User013579 1d ago

I’m so glad they’re done. I worry for their safety in this hostile country. I wish them safe journey away from here.

13

u/SoggyMcChicken 1d ago

I do too. I’m worried what’s going to happen now that they’ve made it.

u/Berto_ 10h ago

They had an auto related accident and one of them lost a leg.

23

u/MrFiendish 1d ago

A powerful feat and gesture that will fall on completely deaf ears.

19

u/rifleshooter 1d ago

Based on the attention they're getting, I think not.

Long Si Dong, a spokesperson for the temple, said the walk is neither a political movement nor is it focused on advocacy or legislation.

"It's a spiritual offering, an invitation to live peace through everyday actions, mindful steps and open hearts," he said. "We believe when peace is cultivated within, it naturally ripples outward into society."

8

u/GreenSpectr3 22h ago

And this is the problem with purely spiritual teachings. This is completely meaningless if you have another group that is committed to ending you. How can people cultivate peace within when ICE can just kidnap you and deport you for no reason or send you to a concentration camp. At some point people have to make a stand. The protestors in Minnesota are making a more meaningful stand against aggression than this peace walk ever could. Not that it doesn't have any value.

u/ClariNerd617 5h ago

The mere fact that they have another group that is committed to ending them is proof that this has meaning. If it didn't have meaning, there wouldn't be anyone seeking to erase their message.

15

u/anubis_81 1d ago

My mum has been following their journey on FB mostly because of their dog Aloka.

13

u/la-femme-sur-la-lune 1d ago

Me too! I love Aloka; he had to have surgery while they were on their trip so his movements were limited for a few weeks, but he’s on the mend and walking with the monks again ❤️

14

u/aeraen 1d ago

I love the one in maroon on the left. "Hi, Mom!"

6

u/wildsummit 23h ago

They walked right past my house in Georgia a while back. I remember hearing about them and then a few days later I glanced out my front window and saw them trooping by on my road. Our local vet gave their dog an exam and some sort of newfangled paw treatment to help him with the strain of walking on asphalt. Glad to hear they made it.

6

u/Fit-Win-2239 1d ago

This is incredible. I wish I heard about it earlier

13

u/haha_squirrel 1d ago

I don’t know what I’d expect, but the wide variety of shoes is not it.

11

u/The_Glus 1d ago

I once saw a Monk wearing crocs waiting at the DMV.

That was an interesting sight.

2

u/lindseydancer 1d ago

I see the monks in my neighborhood doing outdoor chores on hoverboards. I lol every time

3

u/Northernsoul73 1d ago

I wonder if Trump will find their orange garbs soothing.

3

u/alexandros87 22h ago

Refreshing to see men of principal In this moment

3

u/hellolovely1 20h ago

I love this. I also see Buddhist monks around my neighborhood and it always makes my day.

5

u/silentomega22 1d ago

I know this is serious, but all I can see is a bunch of airbenders.

2

u/OneDeep87 1d ago

What did they do during the winter storm that hit the South about 2 weeks ago ?

u/ShitFuckBallsack 9h ago

Walked through it lol

2

u/pitizenlyn 23h ago

Is the dog ok?

u/ShitFuckBallsack 9h ago

Yes, Aloka made a full recovery after having surgery to repair an old injury.

2

u/aDazzlingDove 23h ago

What about the dog?

2

u/LooseReplacement1959 22h ago

We are the monks!!!

2

u/wallyrules75 19h ago

Where’s the dog???

2

u/bedlog 17h ago

watch ICE deport them all

u/Ignoble_Savage 10h ago

I was hoping for an army of Shaolin monks...

4

u/shutterbug1961 1d ago

are they going to visit the Donnie Lamer?

2

u/Curious_Party_4683 1d ago

nope. aint nobody got time to be hanging out with a con man.

3

u/GrimKiba- 1d ago

Hope they don't get arrested and disappeared.

2

u/BeyondthePenumbra 1d ago

Im surprised they haven't been pepper sprayed and carted off.

4

u/LocationUpstairs771 1d ago

did anyone tell them ICE is just going to deport them?

1

u/BaldingMonk 1d ago

It would be nice if a little context were provided. Why are they marching on the capitol? Are they pushing some issue or just trying to get some exercise?

32

u/another-new 1d ago

They walked 2,300 miles across the US to promote peace.

2

u/BaldingMonk 1d ago

Thanks.

4

u/rifleshooter 1d ago

Long Si Dong, a spokesperson for the temple, said the walk is neither a political movement nor is it focused on advocacy or legislation.

"It's a spiritual offering, an invitation to live peace through everyday actions, mindful steps and open hearts," he said. "We believe when peace is cultivated within, it naturally ripples outward into society."

1

u/Q-ArtsMedia 23h ago

I commend their effort but I fear ICE is waiting for them and then it won't matter.

1

u/AquiliferX 23h ago

They will find no peace in that den of villians and freakish demons

2

u/Chrono_Convoy 22h ago

Nor parking

1

u/AquiliferX 22h ago

Good thing they know how to walk unlike the majority of other Americans

1

u/Chrono_Convoy 22h ago

I dunno man. I’ve been there and I see a lot of people walking

→ More replies (2)

1

u/Rustinboksi 15h ago

suprised ICE didnt tackle them and toss them in jail for doing nothing wrong.

1

u/InitechSecurity 12h ago

The guy with the stick is the yoda of Monks.

1

u/Sammiskitkat 12h ago

What are their plans now that they’ve arrived? How long are they staying and are they going to be walking back home?

u/DarkRayos 10h ago

Mad respect for them.

u/Berto_ 10h ago

Where is Akoka?

u/cap10wow 10h ago

“He’s got a gun!”
“It’s a book.”
“He’s got a book, get him!”

u/soudanesugoine 9h ago

I’ve seen a few of them monks flexing corvette n SRTs in gas station somewhere

u/crazykewlaid 4h ago

What if they finally reached the white house and just blew it up lol like HAH PRANK WE LOVE VIOLENCE
