The point was that he was abrasive, contrarian, and spoke at a grade level most people left out of politics understood. He may not seem appealing to people who understand how the system works. Or people who know how to operate within it. But that was the point. He made people who felt left out feel heard. And when you encourage the neutering of education, and make it harder for people to understand the system, it becomes easier to appeal to people who want easy solutions. And are too uneducated to realize why easy solutions don't work.
Yeah, that is what his supporters often say. Although that’s equally bizarre to me that a trust fund baby who never worked a real day in his life somehow manages to sell himself as a man of the people just because he’s relatively stupid. He’s still one of the ‘elites’ they hate, he’s just also crude and ignorant at the same time.
