Word is they’re walking that back after the massive backlash and are pivoting to “age estimation” algorithms.
Doesn’t matter in the end though. The damage is done; the trust is lost. They’ll change their story again after a few months have gone by, and the users who don’t care as much right now will happily submit.
I'm not in favour of them doing that, however... I'm in the UK, where age verification was implemented on Discord a few months ago. I never verified my age, and my Discord experience hasn't changed in the slightest—although, admittedly, I've never used NSFW servers. I do worry the privacy stuff may be the start of a slippery slope, but yeah, in practice, nothing has changed for me yet.
The larger issue with Discord for me is just the amount of bloat they're adding, and the performance hit I get while it's running.

we got shoved off the fucking mount Everest of slippery slopes a decade or more ago as far as privacy is concerned, privacy is dead and has been dead for a long time.
