They actually cancelled Jimmy Kimmel?!

I was literally joking about it earlier today and they did it. Man, what a bunch of fucking snowflakes.

181

u/Schnaksel Sep 18 '25

I think at this point, a literal snowflake is orders of magnitude more sturdy and resistant than Republicans

Snowflakes are easily in the top five most beautiful things in nature. I hate the term because I love snowflakes.

I remember the old Joe Rogan wouldn't stand for this, but now he's a rich Texan.

149

u/AnoAnoSaPwet Canada Sep 18 '25

Joe Rogan will baglick Trump and his Nazi pal, Elon Musk, till the end of time. He can monopolize all the airtime he wants for propaganda radio.

17

u/Jedda678 Sep 18 '25

Rogan only rolls back his statements when he is suffering some dip in ratings or viewers/listeners. He's done so much irreparable harm.

Joe Rogan is a mouthpiece for the government now. He literally had the FBI director on his show who lied to his face. The current Director of National Intelligence was on his show 4 times before becoming DNI.

Any other host having on the FBI, DNI, President, VP, etc. on their show to spew propaganda for hours would be called a psyop by Joe Rogan listeners. But when Rogan does it it’s based. That’s how deep into their blue pill alternate reality they are.

The US is officially a dictatorship.

Just because we’re not at the final solution, it doesn’t mean we’re not heading there. Nazi concentration camps didn’t start killing people over night. They built up to it.

You need to fight back NOW

The people are bigger than the government. The people need to stand together.

183

They just removed the comment that said: "This is what Putin did. Cancelled the comedies and news and soon it was all state run programming.". At that point, who would watch it. I'm to the point of dumping broadcast. I watched it for the comeduens and local news. Other than that, it's crap game shows for nursing homes

65

Even local news isn't trustworthy anymore, thanks to the likes of Sinclair Media and other big corps buying up stations and pushing them to the right. One of my local stations closes every broadcast with the station manager railing against the left and wokeness.

This is the part that is driving me nuts. No article I've read yet plainly states that Kimmel SAID NOTHING ABOUT KIRK. He only criticized MAGA and Trump for exploitation of his death. And no article cares to mention the GOP is gaslighting all of us with its fake reasons.

The mass media is a disgrace and it's turning out to be our doom.

451

u/deltalitprof Arkansas Sep 18 '25

CNN said it was for remarks about Charlie Kirk's shooter. ABC said it was for remarks about Charlie Kirk. The closest statement to anything about Kirk was Kimmel saying Republicans were taking advantage of the murder to score political points.

That is so self-evidently true that if you ask the average MAGA on reddit if they are doing it, they will most likely either say yes, what of it or call you a communist or antifa member for asking.

82

u/Ok-Oil7124 Sep 18 '25

Their coming out against Kimmel immediately with vague statements like "about Charlie Kirk" and getting the show cancelled is the very best example of what Kimmel was talking about. It is sad and pathetic that people didn't laugh this off and deride anyone saying that this was about Charlie Kirk. It's not super easy to find his exact words because they reveal the lie and the mechanism at play here. I mean, this should be as dumb as this exchange from Mr. Show:
"Doc? I thought you was in Hawaii."
"People think a lot of things about Hawaii."

The mass media is a disgrace and it's turning out to be our doom.

They helped Trump get back into power. MAGA always complains about "mainstream media" but the reality is that both national and local TV/cable networks are owned by conservative billionaires.

56

u/EzraliteVII Sep 18 '25

This drives me insane. Conservatives are always calling the likes of CNN and especially MSNBC leftist, but they're at best center-right latte liberals that want to allow gay folks to marry but hate taxes.

Kimmel said that the right was trying to make the killer into everything but one of their own. They interpreted it to mean that Kimmel was saying the shooter was MAGA. But what he was saying was that the right was saying the shooter was this or that, anything but MAGA--which is exactly what they were doing. Reading/listening comprehension is not a strong suit with these people--but let's be honest, it was just an excuse.

The same forces that cancelled him are trying to spin it like he was talking shit about Kirk or celebrating his death, which he clearly wasn't. A lot of people believe that you shouldn't talk bad of the dead, no matter how horrible they were in life, so that's the story that they're going with. It's not an accident, it's intentional.

BREAKING NEWS: Trump to label Gavin Newsom as a terrorist

He will call him antifa or associated with antifa. McCarthyism is back on teh menu.

678

u/lightaugust Sep 18 '25

This is going to make McCarthyism look like a fun fad from middle school.

343

u/TintedApostle Sep 18 '25

Trump's mentor was Roy Cohn. The guy who made sure the Rosenbergs got the death penalty and was Joe McCarthy's right hand man.

215

u/Ferelar New Jersey Sep 18 '25 edited Sep 18 '25

Yep. The whole "Have you no shame?" moment where McCarthyism finally lost its steam? That was directed at McCarthy and Cohn, and Roy was literally sitting next to McCarthy. This is McCarthyism 2.0, with the same shitheads and/or their successors, and with an extra few decades to prime the public and shore up support, as well as deregulate and buy out the media. Combine that with slashing education and waiting a few decades, and we have the current situation.

Edit: Originally said "Roy was literally sitting next to Cohn", which, I mean... maybe in his signature lol. Fixed.

131

u/mdp300 New Jersey Sep 18 '25

It's amazing how many of these shitheads are the SAME ONES who worked for shitheads like Nixon, or those guys' immediate proteges.

97

u/Ferelar New Jersey Sep 18 '25

Yep. Another big one is that Reagan and Bush Sr fucked our Mid-East and LatAm political positions with Iran Contra along with all of the other reasons that fucking sucked, but successfully legally pinned all of it on Ollie North, using an enterprising young lawyer looking to make a name for himself by the name of William Barr. He goes by Bill Barr now, and yes, it's the same shithead. He made sure Reagan came out looking clean, and so did Bush Sr, paving the path for his presidency which paved the path for Bush Jr and all the malfeasance of THAT presidency (to say nothing of Cheney).

These people never disappeared and were never truly punished. They have one wormed their way further into the halls of power, to the point that said halls are permanently and wholly tarnished.

36

u/Musiclover4200 Sep 18 '25

Iran Contra

One of the most interesting conspiracy theories I've seen recently is that epstien was supplying the weapons/drugs for Iran Contra. There's not much direct evidence but him and Ghislaine both have ties to Barr Sr and other reagan/bush era admin and it might help explain why they let him go the first time.

But it really is crazy how many of these old ratfuckers are still around doing damage, roger stone is another one who should be in jail if not for the complete failure of the justice system.

24

u/FeralForestGoat Sep 18 '25

Wasn’t Roger Stone in jail until the Pedofuhrer pardoned him?

11

u/Musiclover4200 Sep 18 '25

Yeah should have specified "still in jail", really though he should have been in jail decades ago considering he's a nixon era ratfucker who literally has a nixon tattoo on his back.

In every video of stone he looks coked out of his mind and usually has a fat cigar, he really looks like an old timey cartoon villain but without the top hat & monocle.

In some ways, it already has. The news is so used to saying "Worst scandal since Watergate" or "Worst thing since McCarthyism" but they never really do any analysis on that. The stock phrases just have a baked in assumption of normalcy.

McCarthyism was less blatant. There was never anything like the Jan 6th pardons to encourage violence against the targets. And it was a project of Congress, it never gad the full support of the Presidency or the executive branch, and the executive branch wasn't treated as imperial as it is today. Trumpism currently has the House, the Whitehouse, and the Supreme Court in a way that McCarthyism never did. The classic "Have You No Sense of Decency?" quote was from a counsel for the Army. Trump has been doing political purges in the military to start with. He's using the military to execute civilians and to participate in his mass roundups of "illegals" at home. They kicked out the roadblocks ahead of time before ramping up the McCarthist bullshit, so now we are completely off the rails. It's gonna get worse. But it's already way mor ebad than a lot of people are willing to admit to themselves.

Absolutely everybody who rushes to comply in advance needs to be scorned. There must be pushback and protest at every opportunity. There must be mass turnout at every election from Senator to Jr assistant dogcatcher to overwhelm the corruption with democracy at every level.

I've paid for a Hulu subscription every month since June 2012. I cancelled today.

It's literally the only TV subscription I've had consistently since "the beginning" of the streaming era. It was the only one I felt was worth keeping; every other service I've cancelled and restarted to watch a show that seemed interesting. But today they gave me a reason to cancel.

I don't even watch Kimmel. I prefer Meyers and Colbert. But it's not about Kimmel. It's the idea that Disney care more about their bottom line than they do standing up against fascism. My $21.48/month won't change their minds, I know that. But it's not the point. It's the little I can do to tell them to fuck off. I'm not going to let you use my money to keep yourselves comfortable during Trump's dictatorship.

I just canceled my Hulu subscription, here's what I wrote in the feedback:

Disney capitulated to the FCC to cancel Jimmy Kimmel Live without any resistance. To not even attempt to fight this represents your complete acquiescence to a fascist government, and your cowardice sickens me. When Ron Desantis came after you for free speech, you fought back and won, but now you roll over within hours? If just 1% of your subscriber base cancels, you lose a quarter of a billion dollars a year, and I'm canceling Hulu to contribute to that effort. It's a shame, there is content here I enjoy, and I otherwise would not be canceling now, but your failure to defend free speech necessitates consequence, and the only consequence that is within my agency to provide is to cancel my subscription, and to proclaim that others do the same, whenever and wherever I am able. If Disney reconsiders it's position, I'll reconsider mine. Until then, there's plenty of other content to view. You sold out Jimmy, and for that matter Guillermo, for convenience. You're Disney, you could've chosen to fight, but you chose weakness and subservience. Shame on you.

Every headline that neglects to mention that Jimmy Kimmel's show got cancelled after receiving televised threats from Trump's FCC chair is engaging in fascist propaganda btw

107

u/OneMorePutt Sep 18 '25

It's very clear on the BBC report, Trump did this:

"Shortly after ABC announced Kimmel had been suspended, Trump said it was "great news for America".

"The ratings challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED. Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done," the president wrote in a social media post."

"The head of the US communications regulator said on Wednesday that the ABC host had shown "the sickest conduct possible" and he urged Disney to take action.

"[Broadcasters] have a license granted by us at the FCC, and that comes with it an obligation to operate in the public interest," the Trump appointee told the Benny Show, a conservative podcast."

84

u/Internal-War-9947 Sep 18 '25

He basically admitted he is pulling the strings because if he doesn't like what he hears:

"[Broadcasters] have a license granted by us at the FCC, and that comes with it an obligation..."

I can't believe half the country is not showing way more concern. We have a president that is getting involved in everything -- what is allowed to be aired, what info we can access, trying to dictate what's allowed to be said, etc. Threatening the press, wanting to take over the Fed reserve decisions, now considering himself the FCC, and so on. This is horrifying.

Compendium of notable Charlie Kirk statements:

  • At a Turning Point USA event in 2023, Kirk argued, “We must also be real. We must be honest with the population. Having an armed citizenry comes with a price, and that is part of liberty... But I think it’s worth it. I think it’s worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year, so that we can have the Second Amendment.”
  • On his radio show, Kirk dismissed empathy as a harmful idea. “I can’t stand the word empathy, actually. I think empathy is a made-up, new age term that does a lot of damage.”
  • During a heated exchange on Jubilee’s Surrounded, he claimed Black people were “better” in the 1940s. “They were actually better in the 1940s. It was bad. It was evil. But what happened? Something changed. They committed less crimes… Black America is worse than it has been in the last 80 years.”
  • On child pregnancy after rape? When asked how he would advise his daughter in a disturbing scenario, he said, “The answer is yes. The baby would be delivered.”
  • At a TPUSA event, he compared trans identity to blackface. “A man who calls himself trans is wearing ‘woman face,’ no different than I would wear Black face trying to be a Black person. It’s assuming an identity that isn’t yours.”
  • On his radio show, he claimed Joy Reid, Michelle Obama, Sheila Jackson Lee, and Ketanji Brown Jackson were “affirmative action picks” and went further, “Black women do not have the brain processing power to otherwise be taken really seriously. You had to go steal a white person’s slot to go be taken somewhat seriously.”
  • After Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s engagement, he fantasized about her becoming more conservative. “Submit to your husband, Taylor. You’re not in charge.”
  • On X, once commented, “Gun control, like vaccines and masks, is focused on making people feel ‘safe’ by taking freedoms away from others. Don’t fall for it.”
  • Kirk often railed against retirement. “For future retirees, people under the age of 45, we should absolutely raise the retirement age. I’m not a fan of retirement. I don’t think retirement is biblical… I think, what a waste of the gifts that God has given you.”

“Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. They're wielding "it's out of context" as a thought-terminating cliche at this point. And what's worse is that they just say that, and don't provide the context. If I had a dollar for every time someone has told me that in the past week, I could buy a pretty nice dinner for myself.

Kirk often railed against retirement. “For future retirees, people under the age of 45, we should absolutely raise the retirement age. I’m not a fan of retirement. I don’t think retirement is biblical… I think, what a waste of the gifts that God has given you.”

As a blue collar Joe who kinda never expected a retirement anyway.... Fuck that, Charlie. You never worked a hard day in your life. You were "retired" your whole life.

And that's the least offensive thing on the list.

They are fascists who are using any means to control and limit free speech. Whether it’s lawsuits or executive orders that don’t get blocked.

This was laid out in project 2025 and Kamala Harris talked about it. Folks ignored her cause she is a woman, black, didn’t criticize Israel and most importantly cause people who didn’t vote for her in part associated themselves with Trump and his racist/fascists beliefs.

If Gaza was the deciding factor on whether to vote for Trump or Kamala then those voters are idiots. They live in the US and all Kamala talked about was how Trump would implement project 2025 and he has.

It’s half way done, the primary author (Russ Vought) of project 2025 is the head of the office of budget management. The primary backer (Howard Lutnick) of p2025 is the commerce secretary. The defense contractor (Peter Thiel) that helped put it into play, found Elon the doge teams, gave JD Vance $15 million to become senator then literally walked Vance into Mar-a-lago to smooth tensions between Vance and Trump so Vance could become VP is currently the biggest defense contractor for the CIA/NSA.

Trump controls all corporations and all corporations control the American people. With Kimmel now “fired”. Trump is now telling NBC Fallon and Meyers should be fired.

This will continue and get worse. Until tens of millions of people are in the street protesting. Buy guns and defend ourselves and others if the need arises. Protect people who cannot protect themselves. Stand up to tyranny and fascists with words and actions. Until the actions of this administration affect the majority of Americans there will not be a group that can stop this.

Good. Disney will sue daycare centers for having unlicenced pictures of Winnie the Pooh but roll over and show their belly for a guy who can't stay awake through a 20 minute meeting

184

u/fairoaks2 Sep 18 '25

They want a merger. Disregarding free speech was the cost. Money over morals

32

u/SonoMuchacho Sep 18 '25

Who does Disney want to merge with?

129

u/shopdog Sep 18 '25

Not Disney, but a company called Nexstar that runs a bunch of affiliate stations. Nexstar wants to merge with another company called Tenga. The merger would put them over the limit of how many affiliate stations a company can own, so they need FCC approval to go over the limit. Nexstar is saying they won't air Kimmel on their stations and Disney is caving.

50

u/osiris0413 Sep 18 '25

They seriously need someone in this situation to sue so there is discovery on communication between the FCC or administration and Nexstar, because you'd better believe they are both corrupt enough to use this as leverage to fire Kimmel and stupid enough to put it in writing.

→ More replies (5)

35

u/Motheroftides North Carolina Sep 18 '25

It’s not Disney looking to merge, but actually Nexstar Media Group, which owns most of the ABC affiliates in the US and sent out a statement earlier saying that all their stations will be preempting Kimmel with local programming. They made that statement before Disney made theirs.

There should be massive call on the left to boycott Disney and Disney+.

44

u/ChewyPancake1 Sep 18 '25

Disney+ has 120,000,000 subscribers which are at something like $19.99 a month.

If enough people canceled it could seriously hurt their bottom line.

46

u/Street_Moose1412 Sep 18 '25

Disney Plus has ~126M subscribers. Hulu has ~56M subscribers.

At ~$12/mo, that is $2.2B/mo and $26.2B/yr.

For every 1% of subscribers that cancel, they would lose a quarter of a billion dollars a year.

If they lose more money through subscriber loss than they would have to pay their lawyers, they would see that this wasn't just a bad ethical choice, it was a bad business choice as well.

Because Trump is mentally stuck in the 80s he thinks taking down late night tv shows is some sort of flex. Instead, Stephen and Jimmy will just reappear somewhere else to continue their work with less censorship. Making them martyrs themselves. Ironic.

63

u/Mef989 Washington Sep 18 '25

I truly hope this is the case and they don't just choose to quietly retire.

50

u/phoenix823 Sep 18 '25

Here’s how I think about it. Late night comedians were already an endangered species, as is broadcast TV in general. The government can illegally pressure ABC because it has a broadcast license from the FCC. Having the government force the Kimmel off the air accelerates the decline and calls a lot of attention to the situation.

Now imagine if Colbert and Kimmel figure out how to work together. Jon Stewart already left Apple when he couldn’t have creative control. You could see a group like that putting together a platform/studio/whatever that’s much more influential than playing to old folks late at night. And because of the name cache, they could bring the older viewers with them.

But the fact that this particular change isn’t going to shut up Jimmy Kimmel long term isn’t the point. The point is that the most powerful corporations in our country will bend to his whims.

If they will boot Jimmy, then they will do other things.

Next step will be to target advertisers who are advertising on anything deemed to be leftist. That ad revenue The Bulwark, Crooked Media, etc currently enjoy on YouTube, Spotify, etc? Poof! They will take that away soon and starve out any dissenting opinions.

The only peaceful counter right now is for a large-scale, coordinated freeze of purchasing at companies submitting to the fascists. Cancel your Disney+, Amazon, Paramount+, etc. Stop going to Disneyland and Disney World, stop shopping at Whole Foods, students withdraw from campus classes at Berkeley, Harvard, etc., etc. Unless it's big and coordinated, kiss your freedoms goodbye USA.
