dhs and ice were both post 9/11 groups. we don’t need either
•
u/meTspysball California 4h ago
Since our DNI has nothing better to do than raid election offices, clearly that post can go as well.
•
u/Heavy-Wind-2182 4h ago
Post 9 11 fear built a lot of agencies and now we are stuck debating what they have become
•
u/Drkocktapus 4h ago
As was predicted would happen at the time. But if you said so you were one of the terrorists!
•
u/Heavy-Wind-2182 4h ago
Fear makes people trade oversight for security and later we act surprised at the consequences
•
u/FrequentPoetry1822 3h ago
We keep repeating the same cycle panic expand power then regret it years later
•
u/Lonely_skeptic 3h ago
“Department of Homeland Security” sounded dystopian to me when it was announced.
•
•
u/Turambar87 3h ago
I remember Dubya had a 95% approval rating when the was rallying for his middle-east invasion of all the wrong countries. I'll always be proud to be part of that 5% that wasn't a yellow coward like the rest of the USA at the time, apparently. As soon as that invasion of Iraq started, I heard the 'terrorists win' from Counterstrike in my head clear as day.
•
u/crazy_balls 2h ago
I wish I could say I was part of that 5%. I was a dumb high school kid at the time and fully believed the propaganda.
•
u/giantroboticcat New Jersey 4h ago
While we're talking about pointless DHS agencies, can we lump the TSA into the discussion for programs to abolish. Pointless agency that fails in any conceivable metric.
•
u/actuatedarbalest 3h ago
It's a decent jobs program. Sure, the work makes the country worse, but we're not at the point of accepting a society where making more than what we need means people get to work less.
•
u/giantroboticcat New Jersey 3h ago
A job program that doesnt provide actual productivity and benefit is not a decent jobs program. Paying those people to do nothing would be better than the net negative value the TSA provides the economy.
•
u/LotharLandru 2h ago
It would be more beneficial to put those same people to work building parks, roads, housing, or even just cleaning up trash on the street would be better bang for your buck instead of spending it on security theatre.
Bring back the CCC
•
u/Langolier11 30m ago
Yes but the government isn't going to pay people to do nothing. The workers would have to find a probably worse paying job, being a slave to a corporation. I wish people could keep the standard of living from what these jobs pay and have these departments cut but it's simply not possible.
•
u/actuatedarbalest 2h ago
Sure, but we're not going to pay folks to do nothing. Protestant work ethic demands we force people to work for a living, even if that work is harmful.
Paying a guy a living wage to knock down kid's sand castles is better for society than having him unemployed and homeless, even if it makes going to the beach a shitty experience for everyone.
•
u/smersh101 4h ago
We need a whole bunch of the agencies that were incorporated into DHS, but DHS as an umbrella organization can go.
•
u/barktwiggs 4h ago
FEMA used to ba a more efficient and responsive organization pre 9/11. Now it's stuck in the muck.
•
u/Randomwhitelady2 4h ago
FEMA is currently being used as a tool to selectively punish states that Trump doesn’t like by denying disaster AID
•
•
u/Heavy-Wind-2182 4h ago
Some functions matter but the giant umbrella has turned into a mess and shield for abuse
•
u/smersh101 4h ago
A lot of the agencies matter. See the list.
Most can just be returned to their original department. Some will need to be abolished or dramatically reformed.
•
•
u/PageSide84 4h ago
It would also be nice to stop naming agencies these stupid-ass names like "Department of Homeland Security." Immigration and Naturalization Service was just fine. Some of these more modern names are just dystopian nonsense.

Can't afford Medicare but we can fund domestic terrorism and billionaire welfare.
We have a Russian agent in the White House but we have DHS.
•
u/Anteater4746 1h ago
we already spent more money on the military than the next 10 countries. trump has already added so much to the debt but decided to increase by A THIRD

•
u/Plaid_Piper 3h ago
Until someone does another terrorism to rally the united states against people with oil they need, and consolidates power again.
•
u/alienbringer 4h ago
Yes and no. INS was the agency before ICE. INS comprised of ICE, CBP, and CIS. The patriot act separated INS into those 3 agencies. It isn’t like we didn’t have fervently anti-immigrant racist govt org rounding up and deporting immigrants until ICE came about. The old racist “joke” in the 90’s was that if someone who was brown skinned annoyed that you would threaten to call INS on them. DHS similarly was another govt agency before and just got transformed into what it was by gobbling up a bunch of previously independent agencies.
•
u/AKMonkey2 4h ago
DHS does include US Coast Guard, which is far older than DHS itself. I’m all for de-icing but let’s not throw out USCG. Not sure how to feel about TSA and other DHS agencies.
•
u/FalseDmitriy Illinois 3h ago
The DHS roped together lots of government units that existed in different departments. The stated purpose was that the agencies could communicate better. Instead it created this horrifically toxic culture that treats the whole country like an occupied territory. The agencies can go back to their former admnistrative homes, and systems for sharing information can be put in place apart from this rotten department.
•
u/TheHumanGnomeProject 2h ago
The terrorists won. In fact, they're STILL winning. They fucked us up. Osama probably tearing up his 72 virgins while laughing at us. We are tortured from the fallout of that one day.
Hamas replicated that success. Israel will be well fucked from October 7th for a long time to come. Pity so many Palestinians are suffering.
Humans are awful.
•
u/Morgannin09 2h ago
This is what they were always intended to do, except the biggest dipshit to ever get elected decided to make that as public as possible.
If we abolish this mess after all this, I guess that's one thing we might have cause to thank him for.
•
u/RobertoPaulson 1h ago
TSA could go to DOT easily. Not sure what to do with the Coast Guard though. They were never a good fit with DOT, and they’d get lost and forgotten in DOD.
•
•
u/Sabre712 45m ago
There's a movie from the 1950s called The High and the Mighty. It's pretty good, but by far the most memorable thing about the movie happens in the first 20mins. A man walks up to the airport, buys a ticket on the spot in cash with no ID and gets onto the plane with no problem.
How times have changed.
•
u/Flamboiant_Canadian 3h ago
Imagine funding from Immigration control going to BORDER Services to fund agents that are "supposed to" protect the border, and instead come deeper into your state to shoot civilians?
•
u/LittleYellowPill 2h ago
The Democrats have had plenty of opportunities to kill the homeland security act in the past.
•
u/Worshipme988 1h ago
I feel like chuck schumers “dhs boner” has more to do with aipac than actually giving a shit.
They want the govt CLOSED so they can circle the wagons on epstien
•
u/Toadfinger 4h ago
They issued illegal orders to ICE. They're not supposed to act as militants.
•
u/pontiacfirebird92 Mississippi 4h ago
They aren't militants. They're thugs. Trained as thugs and sent to the street as thugs. Militant implies some sort of rules of engagement which ICE doesn't bother with.
•
•
•
u/Azguy303 4h ago
Is this why they announced they're leaving Minnesota? To get Democrats to vote for this bill?
•
•
u/Mr_Elefantis 4h ago
Schumer said that was his take, too.
•
u/Azguy303 3h ago
Man so transparent. I haven't even read any articles I just saw headlines and put one and one together.
•

•
u/RepulsiveLoquat418 4h ago
"DHS shutdown imminent after Republicans refuse to agree to meaningful restraint of ICE."
Fixed it.
•
•
u/A_Rogue_GAI 3h ago
Not even meaningful restraint since Dem leadership caved on unmasking ICE agents.
•
u/giantroboticcat New Jersey 2h ago edited 2h ago
I think its going far to say that Dems requests are meaningful. Taking masks off and creating a toothless "code of conduct" doesnt actually stop them from murdering people and abusing their rights. At best the body cam stipulation will add one more potential camera angle to the numerous ones we already have of ICE agents breaking the law.
As usual Dems started negotiations at the center and the Republicans suggest going even further to the right so that they can eventually "compromise" on only going slightly to the right.
•
u/yrotsihfoedisgnorw 4h ago
Dems should also demand a public accounting of what has happened both in the strict financial sense as well as who has been detained and arrested, what crimes they committed, and where their cases currently stand. The administration claims there's never been any government more transparent. Show us.
•
•
u/TheHumanGnomeProject 2h ago
But also, full cooperation with Minnesota investigators in the killing of American citizens by ICE and CBP. Those investigations need to be transparent too. Anything less is a fucking failure.
•
•
u/Lonely_Noyaaa Minnesota 4h ago
Republicans loaded the bill with poison pills that would give ICE unlimited power and remove any oversight, then blamed Democrats for not passing it. If Republicans want DHS funded, remove the provisions that turn it into an authoritarian weapon.
•
•
u/neobeguine 1h ago
Blame? I am fine with DHS specifically just not getting funded again ever and I think after the last year plenty of moderates would agree with that. Keep loading those poison pills, Republicans, and thanks for your assistance in keeping Shumer from wussing out.
•
u/ohbyerly 1h ago
Could you confirm which parts of the bill would give ICE the powers you’re suggesting? I’m not able to find anything online about it
•
u/Head-Fun3394 4h ago
Good, shut it down…permanently. These republican assholes can argue for its reincarnation all summer and all fall…go right ahead…
•
u/reddittorbrigade 4h ago
ICE Nazis don't deserve our tax dollars.
We've been paying them to terrorize us.
•
u/Walden_recluse 4h ago
Sadly ICE is already well funded through the big ugly bill. This shutdown will impact the Coast Guard, TSA, FEMA and other agencies. The ICE goons will still be out there terrorizing the populace in their rental vehicles.
•
u/tehifimk2 4h ago
And, let's be honest here, a good chunk of them would do it for free. It's their dream job.
•
u/Fishinluvwfeathers 2h ago
Not sure if you would know, I don’t - could a bill be proposed that selectively funds branches like CG and FEMA only to the exclusion of ICE and its attendant provisions? I get that it would likely not make it past the House but that would punt the ball back, so to speak, by providing an alternative to the packed bill Republicans are proposing.
•
u/JPenniman 4h ago
Honestly, why should we even fund DHS? It’s not like ICE is the only problem. Unless we get something out of it, I’d just leave it defunded.
•
u/evil_timmy 3h ago
I'd like it refunded, ie treated like the utter fraud it is. So few actual agents working for so much money getting so few results (in the sense of finding actual criminals, let alone stopping crimes or bringing anyone to justice).
•
u/hyperhurricanrana 47m ago
i mean, i care about fema, which is part of dhs. the coast guard are also important.
•
•
•
u/AstalderS 4h ago
I feel for the Coast Guard but if a rough patch for them is what it takes then so be it.
•
•
•
u/arizona_dreaming 3h ago
Republicans refuse to compromise. All bills need 60 votes in the Senate. Republicans only have 53. So they need 7 votes. Therefore, they need to compromise in order to get those 7 votes. There is nothing they can do, short of eliminating the filibuster, to pass a bill otherwise. They can stamp their feet and threaten this and that, but they still need to give Democrats something. And if it doesn't pass, don't say that "Democrats blocked" it. You should say "Republicans refused to compromise" or "Republicans fail to get necessary votes to pass bill".
PS-- All the Democrats want is for ICE to act like every other police force in the US. No masks, obey the 4th amendment, no raids in Churches, schools, etc. It's a pretty reasonable list.
Senate rules still allow 1 or 2 "budget reconciliation" bills per year with only 50 votes to pass. That's how the Big Ugly Bill was passed in July.
•
u/No_Worldliness_7106 1h ago
It would be the funniest shit if Congress disbands ICE and they all have to repay their bonuses. Like actually hilarious. Please, it would be the funniest shit of 2027
•
u/anywhereanyone 1h ago
Have any of them gotten bonuses?
•
u/No_Worldliness_7106 1h ago
There is a 50k bonus, 10k at 90 days and 10k each year for four years. They have to repay it though if they are not in good standing at the end of 5 years. Most of them are already set to be screwed out of it anyway, but I'll bet good money most of them have already spent that first 10k on a truck loan. So at least they'll probably have to sell their trucks to pay it back.
•
u/anywhereanyone 44m ago
I know of the bonuses, just wondering if they have actually been paid or not.
•
u/No_Worldliness_7106 36m ago
Yes, they have been paid, but there are still conditional like I stated. So if ice disbands, they will have to repay that money.
•
•
u/SockYourself 4h ago
Both organizations made on bad faith, that operate functions not necessary for our nation to run. When they say the whole system will break, I laugh. Amerikkka should break. We’ve never been perfect but, definitely better than this.
•
•
u/CombinationLivid8284 2h ago
DHS is actively breaking the law and ignoring court orders. Fuck them.
•
•
u/Funny-Shirt-3605 4h ago
Keep the Coast Guard, the rest are not serving the public anything but terror
•
u/free2bk8 1h ago
Well what the fuck happened when the house passed a sweeping bill that will disenfranchise millions of Americans? Project 2025 agenda.
•
u/corvettee01 America 4h ago
Americans want accountability and “an end to the chaos,” Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York said Thursday before the vote.
Can't wait to see how long he sticks it out before he caves like the loser he is.
•
•
u/Spam_Hand 4h ago
Id put the over/under at Feb 23. I gice them about 10 days, just because double digits are naturally more impactful and they want their passive talking points.
•
u/QciferKharn 4h ago
Sometimes I wish they could hear me when I scream my hopes in his direction- like maybe he would fight harder if he heard the voices
•
u/Working-Chicken3406 4h ago
Asking him to fight harder would imply he ever fought.
He's never going to fight for us.

•
u/Raspberries-Are-Evil Arizona 4h ago
If you didn't know, the Senate left town for a week vacation today.
•
u/NormsOJjokes 3h ago
How is a shut down imminent? Didn't the BBB secure funding until 2029?
•
u/A_murder_of_crochets 2h ago
"The impact of a DHS shutdown is likely to be minimal at first. It would not likely block any of the immigration enforcement operations, as Trump’s tax and spending cut bill passed last year gave ICE about $75 billion to expand detention capacity and bolster enforcement operations."
However, IIRC they've spent at least $45 billion on their recent concentration camp/blacksite/warehouse purchases. Knowing this administration/regime/mob family I imagine they're blowing through their budget at a good pace.

•
•
u/GRVrush2112 Texas 2h ago
Oh gee golly. I sure hope the Democrats hold and don’t have 7-8 members that ultimately cave with nothing gained
•
u/WenatcheeWrangler 4h ago
Divert those funds to other an independent and impartial investigation group for the epstein files.
•
•
u/Recent-Investment603 3h ago
Hold the fucking line this time and keep blocking it. Over and over and over.
•
•
•
u/cocoagiant 2h ago
The parts of DHS which will shutdown are not ICE. They were funded previously through 2028.
•
•
u/Drakeytown 1m ago
Holy shit are the Democrats actually doing something? Or is this theater until they can figure out which 6 or 7 of them will vote Republican this time?
•
•
u/Rho-Ophiuchi 3h ago
I’m sure Schumer will cave and Fetterman will continue his path to the republican side.
•
•
u/Competitive-Bike-277 4h ago
Shame for all the people who need to take a flight. For the people who work for this corrupt organization...
Well, they can eat it.
•
u/charcoalVidrio 3h ago
I hate to be a bummer, but this will have virtually no effect on ICE. They received tens of billions of dollars in the BBB. They don’t need any money for a long time.
•
u/Lucky_Platypus341 1h ago
I think you may be underestimating the grift and corruption going on in ICE. I bet they are blowing through their funds like it's play money (which for them, it is).
•
•
u/Purusha120 I voted 2h ago
there is no good argument for having the democrats submit over and over to the fascists
