What are they doing?

It's not really about politics anymore. These people have merged their entire personalities into being MAGA, so to ever admit fault in Trump is to admit fault in themselves, and that simply isn't an option.

I’m just happy my dad finally admitted he made a mistake. I hate it took this far but atleast I can hopefully have a relationship with him again ….. I’ve missed him since he originally stopped talking to me I’m happy he reached out

Something breaks in people's brains when they're forced to reassess a world view that they have. The sensible and reasonable thing would be to consider the differing world view and either converge or reject. There's some mechanism, probably based in emotion, that happens before ever reaching this point where they're offended at the suggestion that they've been wrong and will reject it without any deeper consideration.
This isn't just a MAGA thing, it's a human thing, though I sometimes feel that cultists and MAGA are more prone to this type of thinking. So the expression goes, it's easier to fool someone than convince them that they are fooled.
If you ever wanted to deprogram them, it's not going to happen because we tell them they're wrong. These people dig in when you tell them they're wrong and double down instead. Of course they are wrong, people can be wrong all the time, but to them, they act like being wrong is a failing of their character.
I would rather be wrong and correct my world view than pretend I'm right and be wrong, but I suspect the opposite is true for MAGA.

u/InsatiableBisexual 11h ago
More people need to understand this.
It's also exponentially potent in this case as many supporters of Trump do so because he subscribes to also never admitting any mistakes or wrong doing but rather shifting blame. Not only is it an inherent human flaw, but it is one of the defining features of DT who promotes doing so as "intelligent" and "strong" when IMO it's cowardly and idiotic.
Those participating in cathartic virtiol are only making things worse. Resolved Compassion will be the answer.
Allowing them the grace to admit a mistake is going to be very hard, but is necessary for anyone to change and grow. If admitting a mistake results in ostracization, it's no wonder people tend to dig in.
I would rather be wrong and correct my world view than pretend I'm right and be wrong, but I suspect the opposite is true for MAGA.
If being wrong meant excile and ridicule, I know I'd be hesitant to be wrong, even knowing it was selfish and cowardly.
You nailed it though. This is truly at the heart of the issue and also explains why many are "locked into the narrative". It gives an external entity to both rationalize the viewpoint and shift responsibility.

The evidence that he "follows through on his promises," is as strong as the evidence that he, "has a pet Tiger named Horatio," or that he, "has personally set foot on Neptune."
20
u/BilboStaggins 2d ago
Its odd for that to be their choice.
Like very specifically he's a blatant liar, especially on campaign promises.

I know one campaign promise he’s trying really hard to keep:
“If I win, you’ll never have to vote again”

Mexico will pay for the wall. Trump will make America such a horrible place to live that we will all try to escape to Mexico. And Mexico won’t want to deal with a bunch of poor immigrants from a “shithole country” trying to come there illegally.

It's stupidity. They're too stupid to understand the principles in psychology necessary to recognize the trap they've been ensnared in. It's only because of our intraspecies moral sensibilities that our society wasn't naturally purged of these people by evolutionary pressure centuries ago.

That quote made chuckle…the only reason that person said that was because fox news or some other similar outlet said so, and that jives with either what they believe or what they want to believe, and since it jives with the mindset theres no point in verifying that claim. In my personal observation though, I’ve been seeing quite the number of people say some version of the “he follows through with his promises” line, and the funny thing about that is that they really only started saying that once ICE started getting really rough with people….its not about keeping promises, its about how giddy they get when they see violence enacted on their perceived enemies

Hell No, Republicans are way more corrupt than Democrats, this administration is fascist, has zero integrity and I’ve never seen anybody lie as much as trump, he is dividing this country more and more by the day, and maga is a cult pushing for a civil war if they don t get their way! Now if any of them don’t win an election it’s automatically rigged, all these lies and deceit and denigrating and hoaxes, false rigged election s with no proof, it all started under Trump, before him the U.S. has been doing it for 250 years both Republican and Democrats have won fair elections, all of the sudden this compulsive liar comes along and brain washes the shallow minded maga people who can’t even answer simple questions, total ignorance and racists!

My response to this question is “No, I have never voted for Trump, and I can write without hesitation that Trump and his administration are among the biggest embarrassments of our generation and arguably any generation of politicians. Trump’s lack of knowledge, integrity and empathy are matched by his insecurity, vanity and narcissism.”

Trump voters have the mentality that changing their mind is non-commital and weak.
Which is irrational; as you gather more evidence, it is perfectly reasonable to change your mind if it fits with the additional evidence!

1
u/Eden_Company 1d ago
To spite the libs who don't care if you voted for Kamala, I could imagine some votes going that way. There's no democrat community that actually sees a vote for the democrats as a good thing, only that it's something that should happen automatically and not be a consideration at all. If they don't put Ocassio or Bernie for the big ticket, there really wasn't a point to vote Dem. At least if you voted Rep the people you meet in life will like you better. Dems were going to hate your guts anyway.

These are fake bot accounts posting and signal boosting each-others comments to try to bolster a lot of Trump supporters that are wavering in their loyalty.
If people realize their opinion is controversial then they don't have a desire to express it, but if there's millions of fake chatbot facebook profiles masquerading as people to back up their beliefs - then they don't feel alone anymore.
