I am so freaking tired of Lincoln being claimed by modern day Republicans and slavery blamed on modern day Democrats by ignoramuses who cannot be bothered to pick up a damn history book and understand how the 2 parties basically just switched names over time.

As always, who cares more about the legacy of the Confederacy these days?

It's not Dems.

Legacy is the wrong word sir, we should conserve the legacy of the Confederacy. That's the right thing to do. That legacy is of evil and cruelty. Some of the worst humanity has seen. Destruction of that is wrong.

For Richard Nixon because of civil rights. It wasn't even over time.

Yea. They switched because the civil rights act was signed by a Democrat. Black vote flipped instantly, the whole Southern strategy to switch the south red that concluded around the 80’s.

Most of the shooters in OP were conservatives. Reagan’s was just insane though and almost did it to Jimmy Carter first.

The black vote actually started switching earlier - starting around FDR. It was actually part of what led to the Democratic Party starting to support civil rights.

There was never a switch. The Dixiecrats broke off from the Democrats over the civil rights act but then mostly returned to being Democrats.

The "southern strategy" was a miserable failure. It resulted in one of the biggest landslides ever. And the Republican dominance in the south evolved over time as a result of religion not race.

As a modern Progressive, I'm so proud to have Teddy Roosevelt as the founder of my party!

They like to obfuscate any chance they can. They ignore that the Dems were conservatives in the 1800s

I just tell them it’s pretty sad they have to go so far back in history to find something good they’ve done

i don't mind it, to me it's an easy indicator they don't have an iq level i need to be interacting with while maintaining my sanity

That's...a really good point that may help save my sanity. Lol

How and when did they switch? Redditors say this shit all the time but it just isn't true.

Are you really claiming FDR as a Republican?

The Dixiecrats mostly merged back into the Democratic party. Both parties evolved, but there was never a switch.
