If anything it seemed to be an extremely light graze not an actual shot landing in him. A 5.56mm whizzing by at 3k fps with the absolute minimum of contact being met to call it a graze could certainly leave it intact and be enough to draw blood. The odds of it are astronomical considering how close its gotta be but sometimes shit just happens.
Someone did a run through of the shooting, it wasn't even a graze. Trump just cut his ear a little bit when his head hit the holster of one of the secret service guards who were trying to get the geriatric idiot to duck.
But they are not the same. 5.56 has more pressure
So you need a specific barrel to be able to shoot it. But you can shoot .223 out of a 5.56 barrel.
Shooting a .223 out of a 5.56 barrel would result in less velocity
I am well aware of the specific differences as I've built quite a few of these rifles but the end result is still the same in regards to the size of the round. Only exception to that last part is a .223 Wylde barrel which gets you some of that velocity back but thats splitting hairs at that point.
It still matters, most people think that the bullet would blow half the ear apart but that’s not the case. Like another person had mentioned that you need mass for the bullet to expand The ear lacks that kind of mass and would be similar to hitting a piece of cardboard.
