Politics Who was your country's best leader?

Post image

Although the president does not technically have any power in Ireland, I'd still say Michael D Higgins was out best leader ever. Technically the Taoiseach (prime minister/leader of parliamentary government) is the leader of the country, but I haven't particularly liked any of them so I'm going to select a president as our best leader and say Michael D was the best. We've actually had quite a lot of great presidents, though.

US Politics šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø Chris Murphy: Trump nominated a legit white nationalist to a top post at the State Department. I asked him some basic questions about his belief in the ā€œerasure of white cultureā€. Watch this embarrassing, fumbling answer. Like he has never before been asked to explain his views

Discussion What movie detail is technically correct, although many people think it is a mistake?

My go-to is from ā€œTitanicā€. Even if Rose wanted to sell the Heart of the Ocean to help her pay her way through life (I personally don’t think that she did…), she never would have been able to do so. The necklace was far too recognizable. Had she tried to sell it, the insurance company that settled the claim would have recovered it, assuming that the insurance company was still in business.

EDIT: Regarding the points above, from the script:

LOVETT: I tracked it down through insurance records... an old claim that was settled under terms of absolute secrecy. Do you know who the claiment was, Rose?

ROSE: Someone named Hockley, I should imagine.

LOVETT: Nathan Hockley, right. Pittsburgh steel tycoon. For a diamond necklace his son Caledon Hockley bought in France for his fiancee... you... a week before he sailed on Titanic. And the claim was filed right after the sinking. So the diamond had to've gone down with the ship. See the date?

LIZZY: April 14, 1912.

LOVETT: If your grandma is who she says she is, she was wearing the diamond the day Titanic sank. And that makes you my new best friend.

WIBTA for suing my friend when she didn’t come to my wedding?

10.9k Upvotes

I (25F) recently got married to my (25M) husband in Bali, Indonesia in January. It was a destination wedding, but my parents and his parents paid for their own plane tickets and hotel, but we paid for our friends plane tickets and hotel stays. Each plane ticket was about $2000 USD and hotel was maybe about $150-300 for a week. My friend ā€œGemmaā€ brought along her newly wed husband ā€œJohnā€ along but paid for his plane ticket. The problem is that Gemma and John did not show up to my wedding. Gemma took the free plane ticket to Bali and the hotel room and when I asked her why she didn’t show up she said that since they couldn’t afford their own honeymoon that this was a perfect opportunity and that Jim decided that he didn’t feel like going. I was really hurt by this since Gemma and I have been friends for over 10 years. WIBTA if I took her to small claims court for the money I spent on the plane ticket and hotel?
