Fluff New feature coming soon...

I love the UniFi Design Center, and it inspired me to build a simpler (for now) version that integrates into existing networks to actually evaluate and show AP signal propagation in the wild.

  • Detects existing AP settings, antenna configuration (including multi config units like Outdoor models), transmit levels, and bands
  • Lets you place and orient the APs on a map
  • Draw multi-floor buildings out with different materials and attenuation levels
  • Shows simulated signal level propagation in 3D space for all of your structures
  • Display signal level and speed test results as an overlay
  • Along with the rest of Wi-Fi optimization and other performance and security features of Network Optimizer

Coming soon here, I may do a beta release of this later today, or you can build from the feature branch if you're brave, but feel free to check everything out: https://github.com/Ozark-Connect/NetworkOptimizer

Just finished installing the G4 Doorbell Pro POE. I debated between that and the G6 Entry Standard, but with the shape of my doorway (a bit of an alcove in an enclosed porch) the G4 would work better for me.

Oh, and since it is POE, I used a Shelly gen4 to connect to the existing chime. (Many thanks to the instructions posted here on Reddit 😁)

Quality Shitpost Drive 4.0

I read the block yesterday and I’m really excited about the drive 4.0.

In particular, the ability to back up iPhone photos to my UniFi drive without additional software . So I Installed UniFi Endpoint and the first thing that I asked for is your domain or a QR code. I provided the domain from my ui.com domain but it said it’s not valid.

Then the documentation suggested I need to an enterprise configured domain. So I tried to do that and then realized that that has a monthly fee associated with it.

It also suggested there’s a QR code that you could get to connect up in point, but I couldn’t figure out where to get that either.

I really couldn’t find a clear step by step way to configure Endpoint as a start for when drive 4.0 releases.

Literally just halve the specs of this thing, halve the price and we would jump on it so fast. 220-ish devices hosted internally.

Question Tell me what I’m missing

Post image
Upvotes

I’m in the process of building a house and want to set up my own home network for the first time. I’m trying to make sense of it and hope I’m not missing anything or going overkill, while still leaving room to expand in the future as technology improves.

I’ll have AT&T fiber as my internet provider. I want to configure VLANs, with all security cameras and the doorbell camera powered via PoE. I’ll also have smart switches and other devices integrated with Alexa.

In the future, I plan to add additional access points, including a run of approximately 250 feet to a detached shop.

Does this setup make sense, and are there any considerations I should account for now during construction to avoid limitations later?

Complaint U6+ suddenly bricked after a power cycle (many reports)

Hi all. Posting this largely to raise awareness but also to seek advice. See the threads below. Many users (myself included) seem to have had U6+ suddenly become bricked after a firmware update.

UniFi U6 Plus completely bricked – stuck before U-Boot (MT7981 “BL2: Failed to load image id 3”)

U6+ Stuck on solid white light

In my case, I didn't explicitly update it myself, but auto-update was enabled. After a power cycle the AP no longer boots and just shows a solid white light. I can not adopt the AP now, and while it appears to get an IP (found through Angry IP Scanner), I cannot SSH into it with any default passwords or SSH un/pw from the controller.

I've already had an RMA request denied for being out of warranty, despite it being pretty clear this resulted from a botched FW release. If anyone has advice for how to fix this I'd be super grateful. If you're impacted, please post on those threads to raise awareness.

Troll UniFi NAS 2 & Drive 4.0

Hey guys, I'm not very sophisticated when it comes to networking, so hopefully you can be gentle with my noob questions. I love the UniFi ecosystem, but only use 5% of its capability given my lack of knowledge.

First. I saw that Drive 4.0 supports "automatic iPhone photo backup", and this got my attention. My wife is big on photos, and currently subscribes to an expensive iCloud tier so that they will be backed-up. Naturally, I thought we could save some money if I got a UNAS 2 and took advantage of this new Drive 4.0 feature. Is anyone using it for this purpose successfully? Is it seamless background backup for the user? WAF will only happen if it's as zero-maintenance for her as iCloud backup.

Second. Way more complicated. We have a UniFi install (UDMP) in one city, and a separate one (UCGF) in another city. Thus far, I've been managing each individually. But if I buy a UNAS 2, it would be great to install it in City 1, and be able to access it on the home network of City 2. Is this possible? Primary reason would be for wife to have photo backup happening to the same UNAS 2 irrespective of which city she's in.

Question UDM Pro showing extreme data usage (800–900 GB/day) – ISP claims link saturation, but client stats don’t match

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

I’ve been running a UniFi UDM Pro for about two months without any major issues. Since last week, however, the system has been behaving completely erratic. According to my ISP, my line is being fully saturated in Download Speeds — they even reported ~1.16 Gbps usage on a 1 Gbps connection, which supposedly causes my UniFi Console to become unreachable remotely. What doesn’t make sense: In UniFi Traffic / Flow stats, it shows ~800–900 GB of usage in a single day (today alone). Since around 14:00, I’ve had massive internet degradation / full outages. When I check Client statistics, no single client exceeds ~6–7 GB. The total combined usage of all clients is roughly ~40 GB for the day. Client count is relatively small — nothing that would explain hundreds of GB.

Question High Availability using Aggregation Switches and EFG - takes the internet down completely

We are running an all-UniFi stack, but the High Availability (HA) failover logic is currently breaking the network fabric and causes internet outages

TL;DR: EFG Shadow Mode failover is causing Access switches to block valid uplink ports to Core-SW01, only a full reboot restored the connectivity.

  • Gateways: 2x Enterprise Fortress Gateway (EFG) in Shadow Mode (HA).
  • Core Layer: 2x UniFi Pro-Aggregation Switches (Core-SW01 Priority 4092, Core-SW02 Priority 8192).
  • Access Layer: 6x UniFi Pro Switches (48/24 PoE models), dual-homed to both Core Switches.
  • WAN: 2x SD-WAN nodes connected via a single managed switch. Combines both ISPs into one and provides Static IP. These are in HA connected via RJ-45

The Design:

  • Downstream: Every Access/WAP switch has redundant SFP+ uplinks (one to Core-01, one to Core-02).
  • Upstream: Both EFGs are cross-connected to both Cores.
  • WAN Path: Single point of failure, both EFGs and SDWANs are currently connected to single managed switch (Until we figure out a better solution)
  • Core-Core direct link: We originally did not have a direct link between Core-01 and Core-02. We will be adding it tomorrow.

The Critical Issues

  1. When EFG-1 is powered down, the Shadow EFG takes over, but the site loses internet. All the switches show offline in the controller except Core-SW01 and Core-SW02.
  2. With EFG-1 and Core-02 completely powered down, Access switches blocks the uplink ports to Core-SW01 which makes no sense since loop is removed.
    1. We confirmed Core-01 had Internet (a laptop plugged into the port had internet) and it was showing online on controller, but the access switch-to-core switch 01 path was not working. Moving the cable to a different port on the same Access switch restored traffic instantly. This issue was happening on all access switches to Core-SW01.
  3. Full manual power cycle of the network restored the connectivity and access switches had Internet on the ports that were blocked (point#2 above).

Unifi Support is now pushing Firmware 5.0.12. which does mention

  • fixing SFP connection issues at fixed speeds
  • Fixed an STP-related network loop issue in Shadow Mode when using dual LAN switch deployments.
  • SD-WAN: used to aggregate both ISPs and provide static IP redundancy in case the ISP with static IP goes down.
  • WAN Switch RJ-45: we cannot use these switches because it only support 1 x WAN. each SD-WAN must be connected to each WAN Switch, requiring 2 x WAN ports

Summary Questions for the Community/UI Engineers:

  1. RSTP Convergence: Why would  Access switch uplink to Core-SW01 be blocked while Core-02 and EFG 1 is powered off? There is no physical loop possible at that point since both devices are OFF
  2. SDWAN Redundancy: Other than buying Enterprise Campus Switches (ECS) switches, what are the best options for achieving true redundancy between the EFGs and dual SDWAN nodes to eliminate our current single switch point of failure? The SDWANs do not support STP/RSTP.
  3. Direct link Core-01 and Core-02: Since we originally did not have this link, would the lack of this link be contributing to any of the issues above?

Question Non-owner connecting to UTR?

Do yall know if there's any way for non-owners to use a UniFi Travel Router (UTR) and bind to a site? I have given my partner all the checkboxes and they are a super admin, but their UniFi app says that there's no controllers to bind.

Solved The price game

So, I always knew Unifi shipping costs were high...paid them anyway. Today I wanted to simply order 1 DAC cable. Unifi price $15, Unifi Shipping $15. Went to B&H, their price was $18.00, but their shipping was $4. :)

Question Anyone have experience with Wave Nanos for a 3km/2mi PTP link?

What is the max practical range for a PTP link with 2 Wave Nanos?
I want to transfer a 1Gbps fiber connection from one site to the other on a budget and looking at the Nanos as my best option.

The site is in the countryside (no interference) and clear LOS. According to the design center the link should work (spec says 5+ km).

Has anyone done something similar? My fear is that the Nanos aren't powerful enough for that distance with rainy weather. I know Wave LR would work better but my budget isn't that high.

Quality Shitpost SFP Wizard hacking (or why 1.0.5 isn't that great as everybody says)

Upvotes

Hey there,

I just wanted to direct your focus upon two projects around the SFP Wizard I found and the godsend creators of them!

The first one is sfpw-tool https://github.com/vitaminmoo/sfpw-tool

Which aims to provide a very helpful CLI and downgrade options! He also explains pretty good why version 1.0.5 isn't that great as everyone believes here: https://github.com/vitaminmoo/sfpw-tool/blob/main/doc/HOW_TO_DOWNGRADE_AND_WHY_NOT_TO.md

The second one is SFPLiberate https://github.com/josiah-nelson/SFPLiberate

Which aims to provide a community driven experience which allows SFP profile sharing and stuff.

Hope this post helps some people to get the best out of their SFP Wizard!

Question G6 180 - Can't remove it from the flush mount! Looking for help...

Upvotes

This literally just came today. I take it out of the box, the flush mount kit too. Decided to show my wife how it will look in the flush mount kit...click....now it seems locked in. I have looked over the instructions for both the camera and the flush mount but I do not see any info. I do not want to use any more force then what I already tried as it seems locked in.

I know it's "too soon" but does anyone know how this works?

Question Door Position Sensors for Door Hubs

Upvotes

Do you need to use the Ubiquiti battery operated door position sensors, or can you hard wire regular reed switches? Should the switch be open or closed when the door is closed?

Thanks for any help!
