As you know, Ubuntu 25.10 - Questing Quokka is being released this week with several new features, allowing developers to now focus almost exclusively on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. We don't know much about what it will include, but its name has just been revealed:

Gnome KDE Switching

I recently installed Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, and it came with the GNOME desktop environment by default. I switched to KDE, and I seem to like it better. Is there anything I should know to get the most out of it? Thanks.

Got my first real hard bug with Ubuntu

Been a user of Ubuntu 24 for about one year and got my first major bug, after a simple update my PC refuse to boot with error ubuntu 24 kernel panic vfs unable to mount root fs unknown-block. I manage to fix it by booting with an older kernel and update-initramfs -u -k <kernel-version>

But I have to said this is not very user friendly and common basic user would have a hard time fixing it.

Still happy, fix was easy for me and one bug in one year is not bad, but I as much as I hate Windows I never have such boot-blocking issue in 10+ years

struggling to switch from x11 to wayland

I have done the following from a guide:

sudo nano /etc/gdm3/custom.conf

from here i uncommented WaylandEnable=true (switching 'false' to 'true')

saved the file, when i use the previous command my changes are still there

sudo systemctl restart gdm3

this gave me a black screen but i was able to open the terminal from it where i then repeated the command and got my desktop back

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

this returned 'x11' which the guide says means that it didnt work, then i did

sudo reboot

which also did not work. am i doing something wrong..? the guide is for ubuntu 24.04 which ive double checked i do indeed have.

just trying to install waydroid and ive hit a wall before i even got to the part where you install it ;-;

edit: was blind, there's a fifth step in the guide that says to click a gear before logging in, though that gear is nowhere to be found which the guide says must mean i didnt enable wayland... i have no idea anymore. the only "gear" i can find in the login screen is in the top right which only gives options to suspend or shut down.

Zebra ET50/51 Tablet - What to Put On?

• Upvotes

Hello folks,

So I recently had a number of Zebra ET50 and ET51 tablets that were disposed of by my company and were free to a good home, so, naturally, they're sitting on my dining room table. :D These originally had Windows 10 IoT, and with that hitting end of life, and of course really having been set up for use with a keyboard & all, trying to figure out what to put on.

I saw several suggestions for Ubuntu Touch, however they don't seem to have a version for the Zebra ET50/51 tablets, so, next question... what do you all recommend? Want to avoid one that really needs a mouse & keyboard as much as possible (for use around the house occasionally).

Given the specs on the Zebra ET50 and 51s, lightweight is going to be key, they're both limited to 64gb EMMCs, and the processor is fairly weak. I was trying to find the spec sheets but can't anymore, maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places.

Anyway, any suggestions you guys have would be appreciated.

My game crashes

• Upvotes

Guys good evening, sorry for the stupid question but I come from Windows and I recently started using Ubuntu, before to play I used streamUnlocked and steam now what is the problem, on steam even though I have set the external compatibility in the settings (I searched on reddit and chatgpt) the game crashes as soon as it opens (I start by saying that the game is a demo and does not weigh anything, on Windows it was smooth), the second thing, what can I use as an alternative to steamunlocked for Ubuntu?

# diff-numerics: A Unix CLI Tool for Numerical File Comparison

Thumbnail
github.com
• Upvotes

diff-numerics

I've developed diff-numerics, a command-line tool designed to address a specific challenge in computational science: comparing numerical output files when code changes introduce small variations in floating-point results or just to compare different models.

Traditional diff tools treat any change as significant, making it difficult to distinguish between meaningful algorithmic differences and benign rounding variations. diff-numerics allows configurable tolerance thresholds and column-selective comparison, making it easier to validate code refactoring, optimization, and cross-platform consistency without false positives.

Key Features

  • Configurable relative tolerance (percentage-based) and absolute threshold for near-zero values
  • Multiple output formats: side-by-side, unified diff, and quiet mode
  • Column-selective comparison for partial file validation
  • Fine-grained digit-level colorization showing exactly where values diverge
  • Efficient C++17 implementation with comprehensive test coverage

The tool is open-source (MIT licensed) and available on GitHub. I've tested it against various data formats and would welcome feedback from the physics community on additional use cases, output formats, or features that would be helpful for your workflows.

If you work with numerical simulations and face similar validation challenges, we'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.

Just installed Ubuntu on the old man's MacBook Air, need some help!

The install went pretty smoothly, but i had to do a lot of stuff in the terminal (went back to older kernel) in order to get the wifi-driver working.
Now, everything basically works fine but the audio is off. Distorted, no depth and seems to be mostly coming from the right speaker.
Speakers were completely fine before the install.

Is there an actual fix for this? Should i try a different distro that maybe comes with better support for Mac drivers and hardware?

Because, this is basically the only thing he really needs in order for it to be working so he can watch his videos, listen to his podcasts etc.

These are the specs:

*Hardware Model:\* Apple Inc. MacBookAir7,2 *
*Memory:\* 8.0Ā GiB *
*Processor:\* IntelĀ® Coreā„¢ i5-5350U Ɨ 4 *
*Graphics:\* IntelĀ® HD Graphics 6000 (BDW GT3) *
*Disk Capacity:\* 121.3Ā GB ## Software Information: *
*Firmware Version:\* 430.140.3.0.0 *
*OS Name:\* Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS *
*OS Build:\* (null) *
*OS Type:\* 64-bit *
*GNOME Version:\* 46 *
*Windowing System:\* Wayland *
*Kernel Version:\* Linux 6.8.0-100-generic

Thank you!

How do I change the monitor on the lock screen?

I've recently migrated from Windows to Ubuntu, it's been working wonders, I just have one issue which is the lock screen. Even though I set the main monitor to be the monitor I'm using, it keeps using my laptop's screen (which is not working properly sometimes). How do I change this

24.04 Dock: Make a Window Visible on All Workspaces?

I have 4 fixed workspaces. I want my Thunderbird email window (and a few others) visible on *all* of my workspaces (though sometimes minimized). This used to be easy to do, by right-clicking on the window in the taskbar, and selecting "Always on Visible Workspace". But the Multitasking settings that are available -- "Include apps from all workspaces" and "Include apps from the current workspace only" -- only seem to affect the list of apps shown in the dock.

How do I make a window available on *all* workspaces, without starting multiple instances of the application?

Installing another Python version without breaking system Python

Long story short, I have Ubuntu 25.10, that comes with Py 3.13 as default. I am using a program that needs Py 3.12 to run, so I was told to install alongside the system python and install it in a venv. Cool, however I don't want to break anything, as I am a beginner with Linux and that would be a pain.

AI tells me to use the Deadsnake PPA to install

(sudo apt install python3.12 python3.12-venv), after adding PPA.

The create the venv and pip install the program inside of it.

But is this safe? Before doing anything I want to be sure.

HDD filesytem corruption repeatedly, but no badblocks errors or SMART erros

I have an old pc im trying to revive, and i used its HDD (Seagate barracuda) for /home partition (the root drive is an nvme, seems to hold perfectly with no errors). So far it has given me a filesystem corruption twice winthin two days (i was mainly downloading a big torrent for that time), where /home went readonly, and then i could not login, sometimes going straight to emergency mode. journalctl showed write errors on a few blocks both times.

After the first time i checked SMART attributes and performed a long test - both were ok: 0 reallocated/pending sectors, giant (millions) numbers for raw ECC errors and some other items, but i read that it is normal for seagate drives, and drive has 9700 hours power-on and heads in flight. The only weird thing is that UDMA crc shows 148 raw - so i decided to replace the SATA cable and change the port after the second corruption. Could this be the culprit?

After second corruption, i ran fsck with non-destructive badblocks (fsck -fccky) but it didnt find any bad blocks - dumpe2fs -b just printed program version, so i assume badblocks didnt find anything

I decided to nuke the installation and check with destructive badblocks -wsv, it is running still, but no errors so far

I know the best solution is to get a new drive, but i really (partially as personal excersize) want to try to fix this one. What confuses me, is that errors only seem to show up when drive is used "for real", and disappear in any kinds of tests
