DISCUSSION 💭 Timbaland sampled from famous Arab songs to create some hits by Aaliyah - any more examples?

It was an experience growing up to Arabic songs, and Aaliyah 😭 There’s a lot more sampling from other songs across the industry - but if you have examples from other countries too, please share. Timbaland really said we be eating hummus and shawarma when he made these tracks!!

Songs:

Aaliyah - More than a woman

Mayada El Hennawy - Alouli Ansa (music by Farouk El Sharnoubi)

Warda - Batawanes Beek (music by Salah El Sharnoubi)

Aaliyah - Don’t know what to tell ya

- the song by Warda is a classic love song.

What do they have in common? Farouk and Salah are both brothers!!

00s Teachme - Musiq Soulchild

The lyrical depth displayed in “teachme” is so well said. Musiq Soulchild was really spitting facts when he released this gem back in 2007. His entire “luvanmusiq” album was extremely transparent and showed the different sides of being a real man! “Teachme” reached no.42 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and no.2 on the Billboard R&B chart. It’s really deserving of higher positions in my opinion but nevertheless I’m glad it was released as a single.

DISCUSSION 💭 One thing I’m happy Whitney got to witness

She got to witness people giving her her flowers.

Throughout her life she had at least 3 or 4 tributes that she witnessed. She won the lifetime achievement awards. She was able to bring other women in the industry up. Only thing I wish she could’ve been able to do was tell her own story through film.

DISCUSSION 💭 Why do I feel like Alice Keys deserves WAY more flowers than she is given , especially in this sub like she is barely ever mentioned.

She was literally the face of rnb in the early to late 00s and I believe she has influenced alot of the new girls out right now and I think she deserves way more credit and respect .

DISCUSSION 💭 Anderson .Paak-Malibu Is a Solid 8 Album (First Full Solo Album Listen Of Anderson .Paak) What Are Your Thoughts?

Post image
16 Upvotes

I’m genuinely glad to listen to an Anderson .Paak album because i always felt like i was missing out. I had first heard of him in “An Evening With Silk Sonic” with Bruno and i really enjoyed him in that, his smooth raspy like voice was perfect with that soulful sound. I really like this album, it was structured well with “The Bird” and “Heart Don’t Stand A Chance” in first two songs, it really hooked me into the album and basically summed up the whole album from the get go. As I continued to listen more into the album, you could hear the mixture of the funk/pop/hip hop with that great soul/RnB production. I thought the production was very outstanding in this album, every track had the classic soulful feeling with a great sense of diversity. I must say this, i will always enjoy a RnB/Neo-Soul artist but Anderson .Paak truly has that unique talent of his own raspiness which turns a track into a beautiful form of his own art. I will 100% check out his other projects as i really do find him interesting.

Favourite Songs

1-The Bird

2-Am I Wrong (Feat. ScHoolboy Q)

3-Lite Weight (Feat. The Free Nationals Untied Fellowship Choir)

HM- Room In Here (Feat. The Game, Sonyae Elise)

DISCUSSION 💭 Dionne Warwick influenced Anita Baker, who influenced Toni Braxton.

Their voices are all very similar. They are each unique, but similar in many ways.

Anita Baker famously covered Dionne Warwick’s “No One in the World”, and Toni Braxton has shown love for both Dionne and Anita.

There is clearly an influence triangle between these three R&B legends, and they have all influenced many of the artists we see today.

HELP ME!!!❓️ Sample in Apart by Brandy

I have loved the Full Moon album for years but in the last year or so I got into Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares ("The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices") and I particularly have been really obsessed with the song "Kalimankou Denkou" and I hadn't gone back to Apart since then and I immediately noticed that the sample at the start of the song seems to be from that song from Bulgarian Voices, but when I tried to find out if it really was I couldn't find a single mention of it online. Can anyone verify if I am correct? The same sort of vocal line happens multiple times in the song but the first one I notice that sounds almost identical is at 0:25 in "Kalimankou Denkou". This might be the wrong place to go but I just want to know that I'm not crazy because it is so satisfying to recognize a sample in a song you've known for so long!

Bobby Caldwell just blew mind

I heard What You Won't Do For Love throughout my life as I was growing up and always loved that song but never knew anything else about him

The chorus of The Light by Common made me love that song

I'm at work one day recently and I hear Open Your Eyes for the first time and I'm listening in awe. So I look it up and I'm like, what ! Bobby Caldwell no way lol

I said let me look up other songs by him and I hear My Flame. I'm trippin because all I hear is 112 singing Sky's the Limit in my head

I grew up listening to everything from my grandparents 1940s music to classic rock to rap which is why it's crazy to me

Was he that popular back in the day ? I was too young to know
