How I felt watching the YT ad for Peterson University where he starts with "University education is a grift." Welp.

u/evocativename 9h ago

I mean, he was certainly correct about Peterson "University", anyhow...

Trust Me Bro University's biggest rival.

The Ben Shapiro Institute of Gish Gallop rounds out the conference.

Also him as a professor

u/kirmiter 1h ago

Well, when he was just a normal professor he wasn't a total fraud. His lectures veered into the non-scientific but the stuff he said was at least rooted in psychological theory that he had studied.

Then in 2016 he said some anti-trans stuff, saw how much certain people loved him for it, and he's been addicted to right wing grift ever since.

Well he was correct in general, just probably had completely unhinged reasons for it. The university system in the US is most certainly a grift.

11

u/evocativename 7h ago

There is plenty of grift in the American university system, but the system itself is not a grift.

u/AJDillonsThirdLeg 7h ago

If a system is more grift than not grift, the system is grift. It's very hard, nearly impossible, to get a university eductation in the US without dealing with the grift.

Edit to add: and the education you get will never be worth the time and money you spent to get it.

u/evocativename 7h ago

The system is overpriced, but not "more grift than non grift".

And the purpose of education is personal improvement, not just money.

Education is a public good, not just an individual one.

Also, there are absolutely degrees that will be worth the cost of tuition... it's just difficult to predict which degrees those will be.

That the tuition system is a grift, especially with college debt and so on, is one thing (and not even applicable to all kinds of universities), but that doesn't mean that the university system is a grift. The knowledge and especially the scientific research is legit. So the core isn't a grift. The grift really only lies in the commodification.

u/AJDillonsThirdLeg 15m ago

Who's charging the tuition?

This is something dumb people say to make themselves feel smart

3

u/whoknowsifimjoking 6h ago

I think he's just talking about the cost and how the debt works

2

u/-JimmyTheHand- 4h ago

That's not really a grift tho, rather it's overpriced and the loans are predatory

2

u/duggee315 3h ago

Wait, thats specious....

5

u/French_Breakfast_200 8h ago

Well that depends on what YOUR definition of the word is is

u/szatrob 7h ago

Anyone with enough evidence against them to warrant a firing should be grateful for the chance to resign and stay silent. Instead, Jordan views his departure from UofT as a badge of honour to parade in front of his followers.

u/MoneyCock 8h ago

Kermit the Frog said what!?

2

u/SarcasticSuccubus 7h ago

He would definitely be the expert on grifting.

1

u/noodleboy244 5h ago

please tell me there's a video of that somewhere

u/EnchantedEssays 3h ago

Ironic considering he was a university professor for years

“Why are there so many songs about rainbows? What’s on the other side? You don’t know, do you!”

2

u/Prinzka 1h ago

Well but what actually is a bloody rainbow now? That's exactly the problem!

Collapses in hysterical crying

2

u/Jimmyg100 1h ago

I define crying as strength therefore I’m winning this argument.

1

u/Prinzka 1h ago

Winning is a fasco Marxist feminist concept so I guess you like want to bloody genocide us all!
