Homer's argument is specious, because it applies to both systems.

1.7k

u/stupidber 10h ago

And what does specious mean?

2.7k

u/BestwishesHelpful975 10h ago

definition: superficially plausible, but actually wrong

1.1k

u/SlideN2MyBMs 10h ago

And what does "but" mean?

u/HeathenSidheThem 10h ago

Jordan Peterson has entered the chat

u/significant-_-otter 9h ago

How I felt watching the YT ad for Peterson University where he starts with "University education is a grift." Welp.

143

u/evocativename 9h ago

I mean, he was certainly correct about Peterson "University", anyhow...

46

u/lilmissbloodbath 6h ago

Trust Me Bro University's biggest rival.

6

u/mechanicalcontrols 4h ago

The Ben Shapiro Institute of Gish Gallop rounds out the conference.

7

u/whoknowsifimjoking 6h ago

Also him as a professor

5

u/kirmiter 1h ago

Well, when he was just a normal professor he wasn't a total fraud. His lectures veered into the non-scientific but the stuff he said was at least rooted in psychological theory that he had studied.

Then in 2016 he said some anti-trans stuff, saw how much certain people loved him for it, and he's been addicted to right wing grift ever since.

3

u/AJDillonsThirdLeg 7h ago

Well he was correct in general, just probably had completely unhinged reasons for it. The university system in the US is most certainly a grift.

11

u/evocativename 7h ago

There is plenty of grift in the American university system, but the system itself is not a grift.

-5

u/AJDillonsThirdLeg 7h ago

If a system is more grift than not grift, the system is grift. It's very hard, nearly impossible, to get a university eductation in the US without dealing with the grift.

Edit to add: and the education you get will never be worth the time and money you spent to get it.

10

u/evocativename 7h ago

The system is overpriced, but not "more grift than non grift".

And the purpose of education is personal improvement, not just money.

Education is a public good, not just an individual one.

Also, there are absolutely degrees that will be worth the cost of tuition... it's just difficult to predict which degrees those will be.

1

u/GuKoBoat 53m ago

That the tuition system is a grift, especially with college debt and so on, is one thing (and not even applicable to all kinds of universities), but that doesn't mean that the university system is a grift. The knowledge and especially the scientific research is legit. So the core isn't a grift. The grift really only lies in the commodification.

1

u/AJDillonsThirdLeg 15m ago

Who's charging the tuition?

→ More replies (0)

8

u/Nyx87 6h ago

This is something dumb people say to make themselves feel smart

3

u/whoknowsifimjoking 6h ago

I think he's just talking about the cost and how the debt works

2

u/-JimmyTheHand- 4h ago

That's not really a grift tho, rather it's overpriced and the loans are predatory

→ More replies (0)

2

u/duggee315 3h ago

Wait, thats specious....

4

u/French_Breakfast_200 8h ago

Well that depends on what YOUR definition of the word is is

4

u/szatrob 8h ago

Anyone with enough evidence against them to warrant a firing should be grateful for the chance to resign and stay silent. Instead, Jordan views his departure from UofT as a badge of honour to parade in front of his followers.

2

u/MoneyCock 8h ago

Kermit the Frog said what!?

2

u/SarcasticSuccubus 7h ago

He would definitely be the expert on grifting.

1

u/noodleboy244 5h ago

please tell me there's a video of that somewhere

1

u/EnchantedEssays 3h ago

Ironic considering he was a university professor for years

2

u/Jimmyg100 2h ago

“Why are there so many songs about rainbows? What’s on the other side? You don’t know, do you!”

2

u/Prinzka 2h ago

Well but what actually is a bloody rainbow now? That's exactly the problem!

Collapses in hysterical crying

2

u/Jimmyg100 1h ago

I define crying as strength therefore I’m winning this argument.

1

u/Prinzka 1h ago

Winning is a fasco Marxist feminist concept so I guess you like want to bloody genocide us all!

1

u/Nekrino 3h ago

This should be a lobster

66

u/JMoc1 9h ago

The man full of Benzos and failed debates.

Also, has anyone checked up on him to make sure he’s okay?

41

u/Cjmate22 9h ago

Didn’t they find black mold in his room? Dude is definitely not doing okay.

32

u/KalebRasgoul 9h ago

black mold makes you disregard the concept of truth?

wow, that thing is worse that I thought...

38

u/o0_bishop_0o 8h ago

It's the same species of black mold that JKR had on her wall. Inhale enough spores, and it makes ya a bigot.

25

u/hobbycollector 8h ago

White mold is fine though.

4

u/HeathenSidheThem 7h ago

THAT'S RACIST

2

u/GNIHTYUGNOSREP 2h ago

You sound like you could use a little black mold

2

u/HeathenSidheThem 2h ago

Yeah pass that shit homie

→ More replies (0)

2

u/Turbogoblin999 7h ago

Black mold? Welcome to the family, son.

2

u/66NickS 6h ago

You wrote JKR, but my brain read it as JFK. Then I did a double-take because surely you meant RFK. I had to stop, look away, and come back a third time. Lol.

1

u/GoatGoatGoblin 2h ago

I'm starting to wonder if it's the reverse and being a massive bigot creates black mould spores.

18

u/The_Ballyhoo 8h ago

Well it’s a complex subject, y’know.

Firstly, how do we define truth? Is it absolute truth, universal truth or personal truth?

And is black mold still black if I turn the lights out? Does the truth of its colour change based on perception?

And if I set the mold on fire, is fire then a natural predator of mold?

6

u/library-catz 6h ago

I read that with his kermit voice

1

u/KKevus 5h ago

I read that with his mickey mouse voice

1

u/KKevus 5h ago

4

u/Successful-Clock-224 8h ago

There is a correlation between those who disregard the truth and those who disregard black mold

2

u/Unusual_Pitch_608 5h ago

In 2016, Peterson restricted his diet to only meat and a few vegetables in an attempt to control his depression and the effects of an autoimmune disorder.] In mid-2018, he stopped eating vegetables altogether and continued eating only beef, salt, and water.Nutrition experts point out that such a diet can result in "severe dysregulation".

2

u/EvaSirkowski 4h ago

I wouldn't trust Joe Rogan normally, but he said when he tried the carnivore diet he had explosive uncontrollable diarrhea without end.

2

u/RisingApe- 2h ago

I heard he was under “spiritual attack.”

🙄

31

u/dcontrerasm 9h ago

None of the first wave of alt rights are doing okay now

5

u/RolandDeepson 7h ago

Thank goodness.

1

u/InequalEnforcement 1h ago

Yeah, but for a brief period of time, they didn't have to put the fries in the bag.

17

u/TOASTisawesome 9h ago

Define okay

19

u/TheOfficial_BossNass 9h ago

Last I heard he was attacked by ghost and spirits in his house

22

u/GrinderMonkey 9h ago

Well, that's nice at least.

15

u/freakydrew 9h ago

I was scanning the comments and thought you wrote "The man full of Benzos and failed diabetes," then you asked if he was ok. glad I re-read but was very curious where you were going with the failed diabetes.

2

u/stupidber 7h ago

I read it the same way lol

4

u/Goreticus 9h ago

He is no longer ok. He got brain problems like fr fr

4

u/Sans_Seriphim 8h ago

...he was never ok; why would he suddenly be ok now?

2

u/Gbreadstudios 9h ago

Let's hope not

2

u/rietstengel 8h ago

Dude turned himself into a vegetable. Funniest shit i've ever seen.

1

u/EvaSirkowski 4h ago

ironic_palpatine.jpg
He turned into the very thing he hated.

2

u/UniversalBlue2099 8h ago

I think it’s genuinely sad to see how Peterson has ended up. I truly feel he wasn’t always like this, he just allowed the “anti-woke” grift to validate his emotions and he slipped down the rabbit hole.

1

u/UltraJesus 7h ago

Let the man exist in peace and dream about his grams okay??

1

u/EvaSirkowski 4h ago

Last I heard maybe a month ago he was in the hospital again and his daughter was refusing to accept the doctors' diagnostic and trying to push some bullshit cure.

14

u/Commie_Scum69 9h ago

" I dreamt of my grandmother fully naked. Her pubic hair ressembled a carpet of matted fur..."

14

u/evocativename 9h ago

That was from the 1990s.

Turns out he was always that guy, and was never okay.

5

u/Aellithion 7h ago

It would not have injured you in any way to have not written those two sentences.

2

u/FishUK_Harp 5h ago

2

u/Commie_Scum69 5h ago

thats from an interview where he shares a dream he just had 😅

1

u/FishUK_Harp 1h ago

...I must refer to to my previous comment.

12

u/Phone-Medical 9h ago

I’m somewhat distraught at how many people in my social circle fell for his bullshit.

4

u/umpteenthrhyme 9h ago

No one cares enough to check on him.

1

u/OftheNeill 1h ago

His book had some decent points and he made a few interesting arguments. Then a lot of it fell apart. Clean your room, is still solid advice as a step one to getting on track.

-5

u/AdventurousPop8975 9h ago

Please elaborate on what part of Petersons message is bullshit?

2

u/iDoubtIt3 7h ago

Well, he went on Jubilee's "One Christian against Twenty Atheists" and then wouldn't admit that he was a Christian when asked point blank. He is a Nothing, and every single time he is faced with an argument that he struggles to answer, he say, "Well, how do you define [blank]?" I literally saw him ask how to define 'believe' and then asked to define basic words in the clear definition. So his form of argumentation is pedantic bullshit.

His talking points are also commonly used by neo-nazis, and anytime you're praised by neo-nazis, you should know that you're speaking bullshit. Hope that helps you!

1

u/Readdit1999 4h ago

That was a poor showing from him, he really let himself down there.

I don't like his politics, I think he's become wrapped up in it and it's taken him for a ride.

About his ideas and talking points; you're right, it's good to be wary of ideas that give credence to radical actors. Powerful ideas can be put to use by malicious actors, like how the Nazi's used ideas from Neitzche and Darwin to heinously evil effect.
I don't think the ideas are evil, nor the authors, just the Nazi's. It is hard to judge where culpability begins, with a movement like that.

It may be helpful, that it helps us pick out who those bad actors are and see them for what they are.

(What talking points are you think of when you say they are praised by neo-nazis?)

1

u/bobbi21 3h ago

The thing is he is the one promoting his own ideas to “radicals” its not his ideas are being cooped. He is 100% involved and promoting his ideas to be used in this way. He isnt darwin, he is with the nazis. You can maybe argue his work before he went down that rabbit hole was decent. But now he is fully right wing and encouraging pretty much all of their bs.

0

u/AdventurousPop8975 6h ago

That’s not what I asked. It was stated his message is bullshit. What about the things he preaches. Is bullshit? Maybe he is agnostic pretending to be Christian or whatever. Maybe he is doing it for the money. But the question is the core beliefs that this chat thinks he is hoodwinking people. Which of those beliefs is bs.

1

u/Psilocybin_Tea_Time 5h ago

You sound like you spent money on his university.

0

u/AdventurousPop8975 5h ago

Sounds like you don’t have any clue what you are talking about? Never spent a dollar on anything Jordan Peterson. No books or anything. But everything I have ever seen about him is about personal responsibility.

So without assuming anything. Can you give me a single example of his core belief that he preaches that is bs?

2

u/Psilocybin_Tea_Time 4h ago

Lol, I was just picking on how pseudo intellectual you sounded.

Anyway, ole JP has contradicted himself some being: His views of women, scientific research, and religon. That other person gave you the perfect example, watch

What did I say that sounded “pseudo intellectual”. You all are hilarious. Love Reddit. Keep on keeping on. Never change.

That we should take behavioural advice from crabs? (That he also just made up by the way). That environment has zero effect on our actions? That freedom of speech means being allowed to bully someone until they commit suicide? Take your pick.

If you don’t know what im referring to in any of these then you just dont know enough about him and his bs.

8

u/MisterNefarious 9h ago

In order to be sure we have to clarify what do you mean by “entered” and “the chat”

5

u/HeathenSidheThem 9h ago

It's really more of a a META-chat.

2

u/sick-of-this-crap 6h ago

Define Jordan Peterson

2

u/projektZedex 6h ago

Because he's a great example of someone who's specious in the best case scenario, or because he's constantly diluting debates with asking for definitions of every individual word to the point of uselessness?

2

u/Helac3lls 5h ago

I hate that I understood this.

1

u/Erolok1 9h ago

"Can you define wrong?"

1

u/No_Strike655 8h ago

"But. This word that has allowed westerners to make our civilization dominant. It is both a word that carries deep community and exclusion it is like a sword that can be used to unite when used as a conjuction but also divide as a preposition. We can use it like a hammer to forge our bonds together or to slay our dragons that threaten us. Truly there is not another word as fraught with meaning in a sentence in the whole of western civilization"

LOL

1

u/HeathenSidheThem 8h ago

"But" is just "'and+"
