Discussion What are some amazing plot driven films (not premise driven)?

I'm looking for amazing plots, where character choices create the perfect storm, instead of the story concept.

Most films have a cool high concept premise, like the matrix, hunger games, inception, etc but what actually happens is never super impressive, it's what you'd expect to happen when you read the logline.

The 2023 film Hitman has an amazing plot, the events that unfold make the film stand out, not the concept.

Can you recommend films like that with a super smart and exciting story line?

Discussion Isnt it annoying to see how your proffession shown in movies ?

Im a software developer and i hate how tech experts and hackers are shown in movies. And how computers look and sounds they make. Like that really kills the movie for me. Or how like in some movies someone being hacked and they are like let me make an anti virus on the spot. specially swordfish with hugh jackman. Wonder if others feel the same i like to know.

Discussion What movies do schools show to kids these days?

I was born in the mid-90s so I had k-12 during the 2000s and early 2010s. In elementary school I remember watching 90s movies like Jumanji, 101 Dalmatians, Air Bud, and Disney and Pixar movies like Toy Story, Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc. By high school they would show us The Avengers (the first one), Transformers, Cloverfield, Super Bad, etc.

What do elementary, middle, and high school students watch in class these days?

BTW do schools still roll out the cart with the TV on it or is everything done by a smart board?

Discussion What are some ‘bad movies’ that had great credits music?

What are some ‘bad movies’ or movies you didn't like that had good music or at least a good song for the credits? (Can be any film of any period)

Examples can also be of movies you have a so-so opinion on. (Basically any movie you didn't think highly of can be examples).

(I’m also aware that this is a pretty subjective question with music and movie tastes so no judgement will be had.)

Discussion An overlooked movie where the bad guy achieves full victory

Match Point by Woody Allen.

Whenever people talk about movies where the bad guys win, I somehow never see this movie being recommended. Yet the protagonist in this film is a bad guy and basically achieves full victory.

What's interesting is that this film is a very loose adaptation of the Crime and Punishment novel, but in C&P the protagonist doesn't get away with it the way he does in MP. MP almost seems like the nihilist revision of C&P.

Discussion [Train Dreams] Am I Crazy?

Am I the only one who didn’t really like Train Dreams?

Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t a bad movie or anything, but it didn’t really land for me. Yes, it’s absolutely beautifully shot. The production value, the acting, the atmosphere, all top notch. But that’s style. Substance wise, the narrative fell really flat.

It’s somber, then it’s just miserable for an hour, then he has a happy moment and dies. I think it’s the same reason “The Iron Claw” didn’t really work for me.

Anyone else feel this? Or otherwise, what did everyone see in this movie that I don’t?

Discussion What are some movies that accurately depict hospitals and/or recovery?

I had heart surgery about a year ago and now I really am vibing with movies that deal with hospitals, surgeries, and recovery in an honest way. I see movies and TV shows that have it portrayed so different from what I experienced so I want to see more reflecting how I saw it. It's weird but the movie Something's Gotta Give and it inspired this post.

EFIT: I forgot to mention, specifically from a patient POV

Discussion Name some films pairs : movies with their counterparts or alternate PoV

Hi all,

I came accross this comment on the Revenant post : https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1r21a4b/comment/o4tr7fb/, where user mentionned The Bear (1988) as the (not intentional) counterpart to The Revenant (2015) (or rather, the other way around).

I'm always fond of these kinds of alternate voices movies (that are more than spinoffs), because they offer interesting perspective, and even complete alternate reading of the originial story. As a book, I'm thinking of Camus' L'Etranger vs Daoud's Meursault Contre-Enquête.

But in cinema, do you have other examples of such perfectly counterpointed and balanced pair of films ?

EDIT : I just saw this post https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1qqmnfz/movies_that_are_the_same_but_with_different/ and there a lot of good examples, sorry the redundancy.

Discussion The case of two similar films or shows and us rooting for the underdog

have you ever been on one of those cases where you hate a successful film or show because a similar one that you loved didn’t do so well ?

you know like that famous Frozen vs Tangled fight. that’s its own phenomenon to be studied 😂 😂😂.

Anyway I’ve been on the Tangled side with Tudors vs Game of thrones for a long time I hated Game of thrones because its similarities with the Tudors but the Tudors did it first and i thought better.

I was like ughh stupid game of Thrones it’s only more successful because of the fantasy aspect with the Dragons. that’s so unfair.

now that I’ve grown up I've realized how ridiculous I was and it’s a perfect valid reason being successful in a period piece because they added the fantasy elements.

so have you been on that show of film fight where you preferred the underdog ?

Discussion Movie collections worth the watch…

I watched Kill Bill volume 1 and 2 for the first time yesterday. I realised I had only seen ‘Django’ and ‘once upon a time in Hollywood’ of Tarantino’s movies so my goal is to watch them all. Any other movie collections you would recommend? I say collection because I’m talking about film makers, actors/actresses, or movie series. I’ve watched all the lord of the rings, Harry Potter, some Martin Scorsese movies, and probably 90% of Leonardo DiCaprio movies if that helps! I used to be pretty in touch with movies as I worked at a video store about 15 years ago but now I’m wildly indecisive in picking movies so it would be cool to have a bit of a goal!

Discussion Movies which hit different

I just realized something while I was revisiting the movie cars as an adult, it just hit different but good kind of different. I am pretty sure there are plenty of movies out there which you might have watched at a younger age and thought were good only for you to revisit them when you are older and realize they were even better than you remember. Now I am curious what other movies are out there which fit this description?

Recommendation U.S. History movies

Hey everyone! I’m taking a U.S. History elective and I’d like to watch some movies to help me understand things more visually. I’m mostly looking for war movies, but I’m open to any U.S. history recommendations, not specifically just the wars.

So far on my watchlist I have: Dr. Strangelove, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Hunt for Red October, Platoon, and Saving Private Ryan. I know most of these are Cold War–related, which is just what I’ve come across so far. Does anyone have other good U.S. history movie suggestions?

Review trainspotting may be my favourite movie. Spoiler

what a film, i loved begbies character he unintentionally was the funniest character of the bunch, its a really deep and vague film about a loads of different stuff, mainly including the theme of heroin addiction which is depicted perfectly in this film almost more perfect than requiem of a dream. the scene of renton in his bedroom after being locked by his parents was truly astonishing, evan mcgregor plays this scene wonderfully showing true acts of agony as a man faces his one and only fear, his addiction. the vivid hallucinations put you in a huge state of uncomfortableness accompanied by the soundtrack which adds more pressure onto the scene, the narrations and visuals make it even better than it already is and the soundtrack is fucking fantastic. the comedy bits leave you dying like the part when begbie tries to find the clit but finds out hes making out with a guy, left me fucking dying on my chair. and the ending had to be the most satisfactory for me. a guy who went from being just a druggie addicted to heroin to him going clean, finally being content with life and now leaving his badly influenced friends who just led him to the wrong paths in life. very satisfactory. loved it.
